Resetting the DC internal memory

Am I doing something wrong? I followed instructions found on the web but I can't seem to do it. I plug a controller only in port 2, hold X and B and turn on the system. The date and time screen is supposed to come up but the DC boots up as usual instead. Am I missing something? Does it matter if a disk is in the DC or if the door is open? Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

What exactly are trying to do? just reset the date and time? I usually can do that from the screen where you press all buttons (a,b,c,x) and start.

If you want to get to the DC system menu (to change date & time) just start DC without a disc.

I'm trying to reset the DC internal memory. There are files stored in the internal memory that can not be seen in any of the menus. An example would be Phantasy Star Online registration files. Only a full reset of the internal memory will erase these files. There is a way to do it by a certain combination of buttons pressed.

I'm almost positive, that you have to do that Up X and B thing as the DC logo is appearing on the screen.

yeah it should work. From igns code area:

Deleting the internal memory settings will restore default settings. To do so:

1.Plug a single controller into slot 2.
2.Hold X + B on controller 2.
3.Turn on the Dreamcast.
4.Release all buttons after the time/date prompt appears.
5.Plug a controller into slot 1 and continue as normal.

I had to use it to change my web browser info when I first got my dreamcast.
