If you had a chance would you buy a PS2 'debugging' unit ?
basically it plays
american games,
japanese games,
and CDr copies
(this is why many places use them.. to review games that are still in 'beta' stages)....
see it here:
http://www.devnet.scea.com/2bldev/devsup_prog.html
It's the one that looks like a regular PS2 at the bottom right of the page.
Sony sells them to developers for about $1000.00
I may have a chance to pick one up for about $700.
(remember it's taking the place of having to buy an american ps2, and a japanese one at $300 ea, and you can play backups)
They basiaclly have boards in them that aren't "region locked", so no need for a mod chip. You can pop any game in, and play away.
Worth it? I'm a big time collector,
and had one of the old PSX Dubug Units... those were "blue" in color, and looked really cool.

Sony also made a "teal" psx, and a "white" one. Those were made for diffrent parts of the world.

I have one of the "TEST" units. Basically they're the same as a regular PS2 except it cannot play DVDs. It is in fact region free and you can play imports and US titles. It can only play some of the burned games out there. I've heard you can play any game if you burn it with a special Sony PS2 Generator burning program.

I actually want one of these also, but don't have the money right now for one. The only question I have about is since it has a network card already could you play it online without buying the adapter that is also coming out. If yes I think I woudl have to expedite my efforts.

It'd be cheaper to import a Japanese PS2 than to buy a dev unit though.

Like I said, this is basically something I 'collect'.... it'd be nice to play golds, betas, and DVDrs when available, and not have to worry about the games looking for a mod chip to lock up on.
I'm also keeping my eye out for the 'see-through' green XBOX that were sent out in advance to reviewers!
