And when I get some money, I'll either get a PS2 (more likely, though I 'm waiting for a price drop) or a Gamecube...probably both.
PS2: Devil May Cry looks sweet, as does Code Veronica X and Armored Core 2 and it has Final Fantasy 10, making it a must. Also the PSX had tons of options for games and PS2 should too.
Cube: Resident Evil, Zelda (though Link looks horrible in the new one), Metroid.

Systems: DC, GCN
Reason for DC:SOnic Adventure (played once at EB, fell in love with it)
Reason for GCN: Track Record
Nintendo has a heavy kiddy image, but I never grew out of liking kiddy things (I love anime, parents hate the fact I like cartoons). Nintendo has never let me down. It's a bit disappointing that they don't have any must-have games at launch, like Zelda, of Mario, but the 3rd party support looks pretty good (Silicon Knights--Makers of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Soul Reaver--'Nuff said) I'm looking forward to the darker games that should come from Silicon Knights, and I hope Nintendo will come out with a non-3 yr. old Zelda ( I have my limits on kiddy games too) in the future. I trust Nintendo, I just hope they don't bomb with too many kiddy games, but I believe they'll make it out pretty well

System: PS2, Gamecube
Why PS2: I knew Square would be hopping on when the PS2 came out so I'll follow them whichever platform they go to play their games. I got a PS2 at launch but I don't own any games for it. After a year its finally getting a number of high quality titles that are MUST PLAY and PS2 exclusive (debuts) such as Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X, Devil May Cry, Xenosaga, ICO, Grandia Xtreme to name just a few. The fact that it also plays PS1 titles warranted the purchase for me as I sold my PS1 to get it.
Why Gamecube: So far it has the games I want to play, a slick updated Wave Race, a chance to finally play as Luigi
, 4 player tournaments on Super Smash Bros, a puzzle game (super monkey ball!!), Resident Evil, Mario Kart. But this is only the beginning, I feel better buying a gamecube knowing Nintendo has Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Perfect Dark up their sleeve which will be hitting the cube sooner or later. I don't care if other people say a game looks kiddy or not, if its fun to play then who cares, isn't that what matters, right? I remember reading that Miyamoto said he designs his games so kids and adults can play them and he is most certainly right, they put out high quality exclusive titles that keep me and my friends up late at night playing together. Nothing like having friends over playing Smash bros or Goldeneye and eating pizza on the weekend.
Oh, and just to give people an idea, those of you that have the Gamecube preview disc, the cd holder it came in shaped like the GC is approximately the length and width of the game cube!!

System: GameCube. (Although I may also buy a PS2 at some point in the future)
Why: The main reason is that Nintendo and Rare are two of my favorite game developers, and I almost always like their games. And of course there's Sega too. Even though their games won't be exclusive, Sega is another of my favorite developers and they will be putting out some great games.

Consoles: DC/GameCube
Why? I'm a hardcore PC gamer, and I leave the general multiplayer games (Half-Life, Diablo II, etc) to that...so I go consoles for console specific games...Sonic, Mario, Zelda, Sports games, etc. I like the GC, because I've always been loyal to Nintendo and they've never let me down...I'm pumped about Wave Race, Rogue Leader, Super Monkey Ball.

I'm 20, but I'll be 21 Nov. 26
Going with the X-Box and here's why:
1) MS has a lot of money and won't be going away anytime soon
2) They've done a great job recruiting developers and catering to gamers' and developers' needs.
3) X-Box seems the most feature packed future proof (I'm a PC guy!) console of the 3
4) Between PS2 and X-Box, I wouldn't want to have to buy a HD and NIC after paying the exact same price as an X-Box that comes with those 2 things for it.
5) I like the launch- being an FPS junkie, I hate not using a mouse, but Halo just looks and from all indications, IS that good. (I didn't feel this after seeing it in person at E3 btw)
6) Being a DC owner, I'm a big fan of Sega- their support with JGRF, Gun Val, Sega GT 2002, Panzaer, Skies, Shenmue 2 has really sold me onto the X-Box.
7) I've got no problem with the PS2 software library right now. It's #1 no doubt and will be for at least 6-12 months before all the other GC X-Box titles get in (ed. not a reason, for X-Box, I know).
8) I think the true payoff for GC fans will take much longer than for X-Box fans. It may take close to 9 months before those hot first party GC games start trickling in (Metroid, Marion Sunshine, Zelda). I can't think of any truly hot exclusive titles by 3rd party developers either (but it's late at night). By that time, I might go get one then. For now, I'll be playing Rogue II at work (lucky me : ) )!

I'm 24...
Getting a GameCube, for pretty much the same reasons as everyone else here.
The games are fun. There are only 2 games that I want to play that I can't get on GC (Halo, and Metal Gear Solid), but I will just play them at a friends house.

Okay, I've got some time to kill at work.
The thread thus far:
Average Age: 23.65 (not everyone gave their ages)
System:
Playstation 2: 12
X-Box: 4
GameCube: 18
Undecided: 1
I left out the DC (that includes myself too) just because it's not actually part of this "next gen" release. There were at least 3 people though that own them.
The best part about this is it seems most people are going with the system they find the most attractive to them, and that's mostly based on the actual games that are coming out. No stupid fanboy "Micro$oft $$$$$$$$uuuuucks" or "Nintendo RULZ!"
I personally hope all the systems are successful, since that only makes things better for us, the gamers.

Age: 22
System: PS2
- NCAA Football 2002
A few months ago, I really, REALLY wanted a college football game. None existed on the PC, my other gaming platform.
PS2 had the best college football game I could find.
- PS1 compatible
That's a huge library of games that you can find cheap. I never owned a PS1, but my college roomie did, and there were a lot of games that I played on it that I looked forward to having later (Tenchu, MGS, others).
- DVD functionality
While I already own a DVD player, and I use it exclusively to play DVDs and the PS2 exclusively to play games, I will be travelling a lot soon on business... I liked the idea of having the PS2 to take around as a combo game console and DVD player in one.
DMC good!

Im a BIG SONY fan.
But to be honest, I will buy whatever system my money will allow.
I'm open to any good systems with good games and I've always had multiple systems at my pad.
(well, maybe not SEGA
)

Next Gen Console: Gamecube
Just looks like the most fun, I don't play games much by myself only when my friends come over and this looks like a FUN system to play against all of them with Smash Brothers and Wave Race and Perfect Dark 2 (hopefully) and when I do want to play a single player game I can hop in and out with Rogue Leader and Luigis and Metroi and Zelda
Nintendo has always been great and at the cheaper price I'm all for it!

I dunno if you're referring only to new systems or not, but I figured I'd weigh in
I bought a DC on launch day for a few reasons:
1) $199 launch price.
2) Soul Calibur & Hydro Thunder
3) Sega makes the BEST arcade games.
Say what you will about Sega/DC, but I love my DC and it was worth every penny.
I bought my N64 for Goldeneye. Thats it. Really. I bought some more games for it over the years, but if it wasn't for Goldeneye, I wouldn't have bought a N64 for a long time (if ever).
I "upgraded" my GBC to my GBA for the prospect of 16 bit gaming on the go - and so far, its been worth it (Mario Kart and Doom coming up). Hopefully they'll port some more of the excellent Mario games (Mario 3, Super Mario World 1&2).
I'm 22. I don't plan on buying a PS2, Gamecube or XBoX in the near future (coz I'm broke), but the next system I buy will more than likely be PS2 (MGS2).

Choice: PS2
Reasons: MGS2, THPS3, Silent Hill 2, 007, GT3 and a bunch of others coming soon. Also, I had PS1 (along with N64 and DC) so the backward compatability definitely helped make up my mind.

I'm out of my league here with all you hard core gamers, but here is my $0.02 worth.
I've never really been a hard core game player. But loved the classics (IMHO) like Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Defender, Gallga, Zaxxon, Pac Man, centipede, Galaxian, Chuckie Egg and many more like them. I owned these games on the following systems (not necessarily gaming machines) :
- Dragon 32 (a clone of the Tandy TRS?? in the U.K.), My first computer.
- C64, collected hundreds and hundreds of games for this computer, but played only a few.
- Amiga 500, again mainly spent too much time collecting rather than playing.
Then a long time passed.
Just recently purcased the N64 system about 5 weeks ago. The reason for the purchase was that it cost me $45 from amazon and have bought a few pre-played games, like Perfect Dark, goldeneye, etc from blockbusters for between $5 and $15, as you can tell price plays a big part in my gaming decisions. I just can't justify spending $50 for a game. So I don't mind being a generation or two behind in gaming machines because the playability of the good games on N64 won't disappear when these new systems come. As a matter of fact I still think nothing comes close to the classics or may be I'm just stuck in a time warp.

I'm 28
I'm going with the X-Box. I bought a PS2 at launch, and was never that impressed with the launch games. I'm getting an X-Box mainly because I love the excitement of getting a new system. Silly, maybe, but I bet I'm not alone. Plus, Halo, DOA3, amd MGSX all look sweet. I would never get a gamecube because Nintendo is my enemy. I'm trying to follow the thread rules here; this all started many years when I was a child and every other kid on my block had an NES, and I had a Sega Master System and loved it. Then I took Sega's side during the Gensis/SNES war, so I just have a personal thing against Nintendo. Plus, their first party games all seem to be kiddie games. Finally, Bill Gates probably has enough cash in his wallet right now to support the X-Box for three or four years. So there you go.
P.S. A part of sure wishes I had kept my Dreamcast when the PS2 came out. Soul Caliber, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - those were the days!

System(s): GameCube (and eventually a PS2)
Why: I've always liked Nintendo's games (and Rare's games as well). I had the chance to play a bunch of the launch games at one of the Cube Clubs, and I was quite impressed. I also really like the controller - very comfortable. Also, price is an issue. I can use the $100 I save to buy 2 more games.
I'd like to get a PS2 at some point, as it seems to have quite a few rather impressive games, but the price is prohibitive right now. Maybe next summer I'll pick one up, used.
As for X-Box, it's just not my bag. Tried the controller and didn't care for it. I'm not all that interested in any of the launch games. Don't interpret this as bashing - I'm sure it's a powerful system that'll have some great games, but it's just not for me.
I agree with others who have said that the increased competition between PS2, GameCube, and X-Box will result in a lot of great games for all of the systems. Next year will be an interesting one for video games, methinks.

Own Already: PS/2 and Dreamcast
Getting: Gamecube
Why?
I work in the video game industry (retail side) and I just got back from a vendor show spending much time in Vegas with the Gamecube. All I can say is WOW! For me, its the games. The suprising thing for me was that I loved Luigi, it just reeks quality. Yeah, it may be short, but the animations and things you can do just put me over the edge! Star Wars is just insane. I was fighting like 50 tie fighters on the screen at one time!!! Monkey ball is too cool, when I had a 64, my friends and I would play hours and hours of "bumper balls" on Mario Party- this will be a multiplayer dream come true for me. Then you have Wave Race too....X-box has nothing that excites me except NFL fever which was ((*&%$*# incredible!!!!
