The brightness on the screen I think is terrible. I keep hoping that they'll bring out the Light Boy Advance in the states. You can still get it online for about $40.00

With the mod, the pelican is a lot brighter and the glare isn't as bad. The Light Boy Advance is huge, uses additional batteries, and is yellow. I'll take the former.

Two drawbacks on the Pelican Light Shield, both relating to the fact that it's a tiny regular bulb and not an LED:
1) It sucks down batteries quickly. If I weren't using rechargeable NiMHs, I'd be very irritated. But more importantly...
2) The bulbs can blow out. My first light shield's bulb died mid-game about nine days after purchase. Then, the other night, my 2nd Light Shield's bulb failed to light up when turning the unit on.
I actually like the Light Shield very much, but to have two bulbs blown out in less than three months is unacceptable. I may just be statistically very unlucky to have had two happen so fast, but I've read many instances of people having had one fail.
Potential Pelican Light Shield owners should buy it aware of these problems and with the likelihood that modding it may eventually become a necessity.

A modded Pelican Light Shield Advance is all the light you'll ever need. Plus, modding the things is fairly easy, and you really feel like you accomplished something.
