Classic 'Old' Computer Games

Just curious what classic computer games you can always go back to and play over and over again?

For me, it's:

Civilization (the first one - looking forward to III in October)
Colonization (another Sid Meier classic)
Starcraft

That's about it - obviously I like the turn-based/real-time role playing/strategy games. I just started playing Starcraft again and it's simply a great game - also nice since it runs smoothly on the old Pentium 350 sitting at my parent's house.

Colonization wasn't one of the most famous Sid Meier games, but in my opinion, it was his best. It's freely downloadable at some gaming sites if you'd like to play it - fun to play, always offers new challenges, and you could even run it on a 386 if you have one.

Civ is probably one of the best games to waste your day at. I tried playing Civ: Call to Power, but it just wasn't the same as the original.

I just checked out Civilization III, and I'll definitely be checking it out.

Not sure I'd call them classics yet..

But starcraft is always a fun game to throw in to kill some time.

If I could find them, I'd play my old text based games, Zork, again.

I think I'm the only person who can't stand Starcraft. I've watched people play it online, and it's just how fast you can click accurately around the map. I generally don't like any rts that has "spells" you have to cast on other units. Makes combat a micromanagement chore.

Total Annihilation is worlds better.

Wow, shows you how often I visit that forum (ahem...never ). Now that I know it exists, I might stop by more often (especially since my thread is now here).

Well, I'm going to go back even further with my pick--M.U.L.E. Thanks to the world of emulation, I'm still playing it even today (and yes, I still have the actual C64 game out in my garage somewhere, covered in dirt, along with other originals like Airborne Rangers and Gunship). It's a game I enjoy so much, if I had to pick ONE game to take along with me to a deserted island for the rest of my life, that would be it.

I really, really wish this game would be updated for the next-gen consoles (as long as it kept that classic style of gameplay, and better yet, included the original game itself with maybe some updated graphics). Don't know if that'll ever happen, though. IIRC, I think the game's designer, Dan Bunten (who became "Dani" later), passed away, but I don't know if he (she) held the rights or if they were held by another entity.

In any event, it's a wonderful game, as well as being one of the most educational games I've ever played.

Starcraft? Old? I thought this thread would be about games like Zork, Planetfall, Bards Tale, or any other old pc games.

yeah a great site!!

of course i need to figure out to do dos again

xms
ems
getting drivers to load high
I figure if i can get the memory issue solved and the sound card working and my mouse working I might be able to play this game again.

of course it might not work since my computer could be too fast since if i remember some older games used cpu in a way such that the game would move too fast if the computer was not slowed down. I forget which of my old games had this problem. it was a real time game and it moved so fast i lost before I made a move or two. I actually had to run a program to slow my cpu to run the game.

frankly that game sucked anyway

I used to play all the old Sierra games, before they got weak...

SQ I-III, PQ 1-2, KQ1-4 (5 sucked big ass, 6 was alright)
Gold Rush, Codename: Iceman, Hero's Quest (QFG1,2)

If Sierra made it, I owned it. Those were the days. I swear when I first got KQ1 (distributed by IBM) for my PCJr, I was in heaven. Roberta/Ken Williams were like gods to my 8 year old self. I didn't think any company could compare to them.

I also liked Beyond Zork... that first Text/Graphic merger although I could never get really far, only maybe halfway. Turning monsters stomachs inside out was so cool

I was a god at F19 (F117a later) Stealth Fighter. I was a CMOH winner for all my flying.

Never could get anywhere in that surgery simulator (forget what it was called)

Some damn fine games back then, and I've only scratched the surface... Might and Magic 1-3, Xeen... Origin and its high requirement system needing games (Strike Commander, that WWII fighter sim, and of course Wing Commander)

I just played and played... now that I've graduated college and have been working for some time I just don't have the time anymore to enjoy gaming the way it should be.

Also the market is so inundated with crap that its hard to find the gems sometimes....

Did you beat Might and Magic 1? At the end there was an address to send your score to and you were told there would be a second game. 13 year old me fired them a letter, begging for them to send me the new game (I thought I would get it free for beating the first one, being only 13 and all). I got a letter from the president of the company telling me that my score was most impressive and that the second game would be in stores soon.

I still have that letter today.
