PS2 and DVD playback ?
I've been out of the console game loop for a while, But i'm getting a playstation 2 in the coming weeks. When talking to a freind about "having it around as a secondary backup DVD player" He said he had heard that it could "burn up" or "damage" the PS2.
This might be misinformation. I'm aware, by reading through various threads here, that the DVD playback sucks in quality compared to DVD players, which i'm prepared for, (afterall this will only be a backup player) But has anyone heard of units being damaged or worn due to watching movies on them?
By the way, if you have any general info on the PS2 post that! Like i said i havnt' been caught up with gaming lately. It would be nice to know some must-have games or must-have accesories.

Shouldn't be a problem. The only real issue I've had with it is that it will skip sometimes on certain movies, to the point of unwatchability. But the titles it refuses are few and far between. Aside from that, it's not exactly a feature-rich player, but certainly good enough quality for the average home user.
Sony would be extremely foolish to release a DVD player that couldn't play DVDs without damage. What you've heard is rumor.

K, i think my freind just knew someone who's player had been broken and blamed it on watching movies. I pretty much figured it was a bogus rumor. Just wanted to see if i hadnt' heard something...
So any other general thoughts about the PS2 as a game system?

It had decent launch titles, but nothing revolutionary. SSX, Tekken Tag, and Madden 2001 were pretty good titles at launch. Right now, I'm working on GT3. The Triple A titles are starting to surface more and more. MGS2 is easily one of the most hyped PS2 games, and it's coming out in November. Devil May Cry looks like it's gonna kick @$$ too. There are plenty of other great games comin' out, and the PS2's future looks bright.
As for DVD playback, I had been using it as a DVD player and a game system since last year and I haven't experienced many problems. The only problems that arose were that some DVDs wouldn't play on it (but as MWoody said, they were few and far in between) and sometimes it had a lip synching problem. I recently got a new standalone player (Sony) and there's not THAT much of a difference in video quality, although there is a difference (and I'm using high quality S-Video cables). So all in all, PS2 is gonna give Nintendo and MS a run for their money.

Ign had some great previews of some games. Some that i definatly think will get:
TOP GUN
simpsons road rage
GT3
The mummy returns
Spiderman: the movie
Nascar thunder 2002.
007 agent under fire
Test Drive: PS2
mortal kombat PS2
Star wars: Starfighter
Also the FF games look intense, thought i've never played ANYTHING in the series.
I coudl have lived without one, but now that i've been researching PS2 titles and stuff, i'm psyced. I jsut hope they don't pull a sega
(A Sega= verb - To lie to the consumer, misrepresent prodeucts, and prematurly abandon platform promises. See: Sega CD, Sega, Sega 32X, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast.) Rot in hell sega.

On an unrelated note. My post the other day about how bad sega sucks, reminded me to send them my yearly "give me my money back for the 32X" email. They never reply
But it gives me a laugh to write them about how hard they suck it.
