What is the best game ever?

In your opinion, what is the best game ever? What is the one game that you can't live without?

I noticed that some users posted that saying "the best game ever" is too vague or broad, so if that's the case for you, then list your top picks or whatever you wanna call it.

Bible stories on the NES.
heh, no I kid.
thats an extremely difficult question, it really depends on what genre, some games just arent comparable so you cant really say one is better than the other, however I'd say it was the original Mario, since it pretty much got me started playing games...that was quite a while ago. although I did play some atari games beore that Mario is what got me hooked.

Thanks Shigeru.

5. Gran Turismo
6. Soul Calibur
7. Ultima (series)

Too many to list but, these have given me many hours of enjoyment.

Any classic Pac-Man game
Donkey Kong
Super Mario Brothers

As you can tell, I'm not really into the "new" games...

Hard to say, because games change so much... A game from 15 years ago may have incredible gameplay and story, but due to limitations to graphics, it might not be able to stand up against some of today's games. I'd have to group this by time period.

Early to mid 80's
-----------
Adventure (Atari 2600). Very addictive and entertaining. Lacking in story but strong in fun.

Gauntlet (arcade). Everyone I know had to play this the first time they saw it. Good graphics for its time and great gameplay.

Galaga (arcade). Who can deny this. Incredible addictive and challenging.

Time Pilot (arcade). A personal favorite. A great concept.

Sea Battle (Intellevision). Took the player vs. player concepts of Pong and Combat and made them more complex and drawn-out.

Other mentions: Pitfall (Atari), Yars Revenge (Atari), Space Invaders (arcade), Pac Man (arcade), Zork (Commodore), and many more I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Mid to Late 80's
-----------------
Archon (Commodore 64). One of the best 2 player combat games ever. Simple graphics, yet incredible gameplay.

Dragons Lair (arcade). While somewhat lacking in gameplay, who didn't stand there with their jaw dropped the first time they saw this game in the arcade.

Rampage (arcade). 3 players at a time. Destruction of cities by giant mutant monsters. Tanks and army men. What else could you want?

The Bard's Tale (Commodore). Awesome role playing, detailed story, and great graphics for the time.

Wasteland (Commodore). My favorite role player of all time. Post nuclear Las Vegas, guns galore, mutants, and more.

Gunship (Commodore) (can you tell I owned a Commodore ). Early combat flight sim. Poor graphics for today's standards, but for its day, the gameplay topped most current combat sims.

Legend of Zelda (Nintendo). Mixed role playing with arcade style action. Great story.

Others: Might and Magic I and II (Commodore), Altered Beast (arcade), Curse of the Azure Bonds (Commodore)... I know there are tons more, but I can't think of them...

The 90's
----------
Diablo (PC). Incredible music, graphics, and gameplay. I couldn't stop playing this one when I first got it. Video crack.

Mortal Kombat (arcade). Ushering in the rise of the fighting games.

Doom (PC). One of those games you had to have after first seeing it.

Unreal Tournament (PC), Age of Empires (PC), Fallout (PC), Myst (PC), Tie Fighter (PC), Steel Panthers (PC), Cyber Sleds (arcade), Half-Life (PC), Civ II (PC), Baldur's Gate (PC)... Again, many more...

All of these games have given much to me. In a way, they are all the "best game ever". I'm sure I said that about each one as I played it during its time. It is hard to choose just one, but if I had to, the best ever for me would have to be "Wasteland", Even after the 14 years since its release.

Almost every arcade I have ever been to -- TO THIS DAY -- has had some version of Ms. Pac-Man whether it's cocktail or stand-up.

That has to say something about this game's enduring popularity. How many people regularly play Mario64 or Zelda still?

Tetris is the best game ever. It never gets boring. It's easy to learn and hard to master.

Best game of all time is way too broad and vague to answer. As far as 'modern' classics go, I put ina vote for Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VI.

It would be Street Fighter 2 for me. The first time I pulled off a dragon punch on a hurtling Blanka, knocking out 40% of his energy did it for me. I was hooked for a looong time after that.

I'd say my top 5 would be

1) SF2
2) Mortal Kombat 2
3) Lunar: Eternal Blue
4) Yie Ar Kung Fu
5) Resident Evil

I think one of the greatest games of all time was Doom.

Granted, I had seen Castle Wolfenstein before it, played it, and even won it (all six levels), but CW didn't have the market penetration that Doom did. I don't remember anyone NOT being completely amazed by Doom. Everyone who saw it was amazed, and if they had a PC, they had to have a copy. If it wouldn't play on their PC, they had to upgrade, because they just had to play it. Plus, this was one of the first games that allowed real multiplayer across a network! You could shoot and kill your friends! You could team up and win the game that way!

And, it revolutionized gaming. Now, FPS games are a dime a dozen, but there was a time when there was only one. Doom.

Well, if you go simply by time played, I'd have to say it'd be Everquest. But in terms of actually finishing a game, Starcraft (the original) wins. (Figuring if I spent that much of my life with a game it had to be good).

I think the best game ever was Simon. I just met the guy that worked on the production team that created that game. He just bought a plane and is flying over the ocean as we speak. But since we are talking about video games...

Arcade
------
Elevator Action
Tron

Atari (too many to name)
-----
Pitfall
Pac-Man
Empire Strikes Back

Nintendo 8-bit
--------------
Contra
Mike Tyson's PunchOut
Super Mario Brothers 1 and 3
Tetris (gameboy)

N64
---
Star Wars Racer

Playstation
-----------
Crash Bandicoot: Warped
Tomb Raider I
Bust-a-Move II

Thats all for now.

Tecmo Super Bowl for NES hands down!

I maintain that at least 80 of the top 100 games of all-time were NES games.
