Kind of creative (based on the episode title format):

The Friends cast is mourning one of their own.

Two days after Matthew Perry's sudden death, his fellow castmates from the hit television series — Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer — spoke out in a joint statement, exclusively obtained by PEOPLE.

"We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family," their statement reads. "There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss."

"In time we will say more, as and when we are able," the statement continues. "For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world."

The message is then signed by Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc and Schwimmer.

For 10 years, Perry played Friends' wry wingman–turned–leading man Chandler Bing in a pitch-perfect comedic performance that landed him a 2002 Emmy nomination.

Series co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane were joined by executive producer Kevin Bright in issuing a joint statement on Sunday.

“We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing,” they wrote. “It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives. He was a brilliant talent.”

Reflecting on Perry’s breakout performance, they noted, “It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us.”

Kaufman, Crane and Bright's statement continued, “We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment — not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.”

The statement also included condolences for others grieving Perry, as well as a sweet reference to the Friends title tradition. “We send all of our love to his family and friends. This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”

It's simply how the press works. Are the magazines that have the feature cover article on him ghoulish as well? How about CNN, USA Today, Fox News, Washington Post for having the link to the article on their main page? It's their job to get information out to the public. That's how they make money.

Did you read the tweet? TMZ reported the story before the public announcement of his death -- they paid off cops to leak the story to them. Very, very different from putting out a story after his death is publicly announced.

Yep, nothing surprising at all. And it's not just TMZ, many/most news media do the same thing.
TMZ may be the most aggressive with celebrity news though - since they seem to be first with the news most times. They probably have a lot of staff in hospitals around parts of California on a sort of retainer, as well as a bunch of cops.

Wow, that is some SERIOUS goal-post moving. I never said they broke the law, I said they were ghoulish and sucked. You asked how is that different from WaPo or People Magazine and I told you how they're different.

So sad and unfortunate when someone who struggled so badly finally turns their life around and still ends up leaving us too soon.

Mr Perry brought many laughs throughout, not just those 10 years Friends was on but all the years since that I've watched in syndication, on DVD and now streaming. 30 years of memories. RIP good sir.

I hear this from time to time and it's hard disagree for me. I just marathoned the whole series (and reunion) with my teens earlier this year. Outside of the lack of diversity (which was noted. when it aired) it holds up remarkably well unlike most shows. Just six people living life and having a great time together. It was fun sharing something I loved with the kids and to see them crack up at the same jokes I did twenty plus years ago.

Shitty for the cop to give out the information to the press as it was very likely against their policy to do so especially in exchange for money. The press is simply doing their job in being the first to get the news out to the public.

His family and close friends should have a chance to get the news from loved ones, not a Twitter feed. No harm would be done if they reported on news once officially released. Fuck them for putting a scoop mentality ahead of common decency.

Lisa Kudrow has stepped forward, offering to adopt his dog.

I've always assumed that the tabloids and new outlets all have police and hospital staff in the Hollywood area either on their payrolls or those people know how they can easily sell insider information on the sly.

I remember watching CNN when Michael Jackson died, and how they broke into their regular programming to cover him being taken to the hospital and were showing old clips of him performing and giving interviews. I told my wife that they knew he was dead and were just waiting for an official announcement to report it.

There was a time when the press would at least have the courtesy of waiting for an official announcement before breaking the news of a high profile death.

And, yeah, TMZ is absolute scum.

Courtesy, decency, and ethics died a swift death years ago. The TMZ's of the world would refer to anyone in the news industry still incorporating these qualities as 'suckers'. The sooner a death is reported, the more clicks and more revenue generated. That's the only thing that matters anymore, apparently.

This. It's one of the downsides of being a celebrity...it's a race to see who can report your death first and knowing your family and friends are more likely to find out through X, than from someone who can break the news tactfully. Far different than the local news station withholding the name of a deceased person from a car accident to notify the next of kin. It's despicable, but it's just how it is.

They were likely waiting until they could confirm that he was dead, not an official announcement. It's not good if they jump the gun and report someone dead when they are still clinging to life, like what happened with Tanya Roberts. Not much has changed with how the press reported deaths years ago and today except with the advancement of technology and smart phones means that information can be exchanged much quicker now than in the past. Smart phones didn't really exist or were still very new at the time of Michael Jackson's death that it still took a while for information to get passed from one source to another. If they could have released news of his death before the official announcement back then, they would have.

On a totally unrelated note, why does the TMZ logo look extremely similar to the logo for Mary Tyler Moore's production company?

One of the wonderful benefits of FOMO and social media.

The amount of attention this guy is getting is absolutely mind boggling. He is receiving far more attention than Robin Williams and even Michael Jackson. Just absurd

Decker 10-31-23 01:49 PM

Re: Matthew Perry (Friends) Dead at 54 from Apparent Drowning

Not even CLOSE to the attention MJ got when he died. That was everywhere, non-stop music playing. All sorts of tributes.
More than Robin Williams? Perhaps. Many people have a complex relationship with grieving for people who die by suicide.

Shitty that TMZ pays off people in that way, but yet TMZ is the source that was used to break the news that started this thread.

This is true, but so what? If TMZ hadn't reported it at 2 and we didn't find out about it until CNN reported it at 5, would anyone's life be any worse off?
