Harrison Ford was robbed! I was hoping Ted McGinley might sneak a nomination in too. Those two had me laughing out loud on Shrinking. It's hard for a show to make me belly laugh, but Ford and McGinley were cracking me up.

Based on the support shown for the programs, overall, with nominations in other categories, I would say Succession is most likely to win, and The White Lotus as its top competition.

Succession tied its own record from last year with a whopping 14 total acting nominations, including a record-setting 3 nominations in the Best Lead Actor category. That’s a record unlikely to ever be matched, if for no other reason, very few shows would ever claim to have three lead actors.

Requisite EGOT Watch :
Sir Elton John was nominated in the Best Variety Special (Live) category for his Farewell from Dodger Stadium special. If he beats out the Oscars, the Tonys, Chris Rock’s live Netflix Special and Rhianna’s Super Bowl Halftime show, he will win his first-ever Emmy, to go along with his 2 Oscars, 1 Tony, and 5 Grammmys (and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, and Knighted).

Weird scenario where shows that first airred in the 2nd half of 2022 will have their ceremony at a later date then some series which airred in nov 2023 cause GG even with a strike will keep their cereomy as is and probably just announce their winners.

re: 2023 Emmy Awards discussion -- Show: 1/15/24 on FOX (Host: Anthony Anderson)

Well it's January of 2024, so you know what that means : Time to honor those wonderful television programs you watched in June of 2022!
Thanks to the WGA and SAG strikes, this award show was postponed but will finally be coming this Monday night!
Due to the scheduling quirk, combined with the difference in Eligibility periods (6/1-5/31 for Emmys, 1/1-12/31 for GG), the Golden Globes has already given its top prizes in Comedy categories to The Bear for Season 2 before the Emmys have had a chance to honor the show for Season 1. Very weird.

Here are all the winners of the Creative Arts Emmys, that were awarded this past weekend. Congrats to all the winners, but especially first timers Nick Offerman (well-deserved), Ryan Reynolds and Weird Al Yankovic.

If I had not seen this thread at the top of the list, I would have had no idea these were being awarded today. So different from when I was young nd watching these award shows was such a big deal.

Can I just say that I actually resent the alteration of the meaning of the EGOT label, on behalf of the people in the rare air it is supposed to represent?

Yes, technically, someone like Barack Obama has been awarded an Emmy and a Grammy, but the true meaning of the EGOT status was that A PERFORMER has won all four of those awards for PERFORMING in the different mediums. It meant that you were acclaimed for both your acting on the screen and on the stage, AND!! you had won a Grammy for your work as a musical artist.

EGOT was supposed to be the mark of the best and most acclaimed and most versatile performers in the entertainment world.

My sister will be attending the Emmy Awards tonight as the guest/friend of a food network star who was nominated for an Emmy. She will also be attending the Governor’s Ball. I am jelly but in all the right ways and hope she has a great time.

Agree that it's lost a lot of specialness, especially when you can win a Grammy, and a Daytime Emmy for performing your Broadway musical. Gives way too much of an edge to Broadway composers like Andrew Lloyd Webber who won an Oscar for writing an additional song for the movie version of Evita and an Emmy for a TV production of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. Also, as much as I love Viola Davis, winning a Grammy for reading her own autobiography is kind of a cheat as well.

But I will be happy and cheer if Sir Elton wins an Emmy tonight and finally completes his EGOT.

I had no idea this was on tonight. Just like the Golden Globes, the hype for this stuff has died. Or maybe the NFL playoffs overshadow it.

Oddly enough, I found myself more interested in reading about the Creative Arts Emmys rather than the major awards.

Back when everybody had to watch the same stuff, and the amount of really good TV was much smaller, picking "this is better than that" was interesting. I would guess that I haven't even seen half the stuff nominated for Emmys because of all the different platforms the shows come out on.

Hey, Emmys...

Big thanks and props for actually showing the people you were paying tribute to during the "In Memoriam" segment instead of cutting away to the musicians and audience, or showing them from such a distance that they can't be seen or read.

There were at least 3 who deserved Supporting Actress in a Drama over Coolidge, who was the worst part of that season of White Lotus. Debicki, Seehorn, and J. Smith-Cameron were more deserving IMO.

Nothing else really surprising.

Seehorn losing again breaks my heart. Literally zero Emmys for the entire run of Better Call Saul. Inexplicable. And I agree Coolidge was the worst nominee (and the only reason that The White Lotus wasn't competing in the Limited Series category again
Nothing else really surprising.
In the course of 8 days, Steven Yeun, Ali Wong & Beef, Jeremy White, Ayo Edeberi & The Bear, and Sarah Snook, Keiran Caulkin, Matthew Mcfadyen & Succession ALL WON at the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards and The Emmys. That is bonkers!

And yes I am thrilled that Sir Elton got his EGOT!

As someone who has never watched The Bear, The Beef, or The Succession, all these award shows of late have been rough to get through. Thankfully, was able to catch up on some Youtube content during all of the speeches for those shows.

Re: 2023 Emmy Awards discussion -- Show: 1/15/24 on FOX (Host: Anthony Anderson)

The Bear and Succession really were the two best things on TV in 2023 (though The Bear won for its 2022 season here, which is weird). I was surprised for all the accolades that Beef has won in the past 8 days, though. I watched the first episode and it felt pretty Meh to me. I don't think it really dominated the zeitgeist the way previous recent winners like The White Lotus and The Queen's Gambit did. The thread here only has a total of 16 posts, and two were me saying that I thought the trailer looked fun, and that reviews were good. I guess it was just a down eligibility year for Limited Series (and hurt by White Lotus getting moved to Dramatic Series, which it really isn't). Next year is already looking way better with Fargo S5 and True Detective Night Country (and hopefully Feud S2 as well).

He wasn't robbed. He lost to the best episode of one of the best dramas in the history of TV. Tough category. The wonderful BCS finale was there as well.

BCS set a record : 53 total nominations during the run of the series, zero wins. That is what I consider an injustice. At least Long Long Time got a Guest Actor Emmy.
