You're largely correct, I do think Springer added a sort of professional wrestling gloss to the format which made his show more fun and engaging than prior attempts. His show also seemed designed more for male audiences than female audiences, as most talk shows in the '80s and '90s were geared for women.

He claimed in a interview he was helping and bringing light to the people on his shows where in society people will look down on them as hillbillies or low income trash.
