Really enjoyed the way Hader and Co. wrapped this up without falling into cliches like Barry gunning his way to saving Sally and John. The way Barry went out was perfect - he’s not a hero, he’s not a good guy and he was taken out the same way he himself took out many people.
The movie was a smart way to wrap everything up. Glad to see Sally and John doing better at the end as well.
Fuches and Hank had a great sendoff (that one-shot firefight was beyond impressive).
All-in-all, I thought it was a fantastic end to a fantastic show.

I liked it as well. The ending had a sort of fairy tale vibe and you can tell that Hader wanted to have a Taxi Driver like ending for his character. My only criticism is that I've never really enjoyed how they've handled Sally and the end sort of continues the trend. It felt like she was going to redeem herself by telling John that they're bad people but she clearly has no problem with Gene sitting in prison for at least one crime that he didn't commit. She gets a happy ending but she doesn't deserve it at all.

The A.V Club has a really good writeup on the finale that I completely agree with, especially the final paragraph:
Barry is a bad guy and went out like the bad guy he was - and yet we still celebrated him in the movie about his life. What a fantastic ending.
Over its short run, Barry became a show about the ways we perceive, mythologize, and try to shed ourselves of the responsibility of the violence around us. The ways we turn our heads from it and try to process it. Barry treated its characters as bad guys in a society that celebrates them. Barry was a bad guy with no heart, a product of a violent culture that gave him nothing but a gun and told him to kill. Now, he’s a hero. Tricky legacies.

Fuches gets to murder Hank and get away? Fucking BULLSHIT. Barry gets a movie about how he's a hero? Fucking BULLSHIT. Gene in jail for life for Janice's murder? Well, you get the idea. I was expecting Barry (and others) to get their comeuppance, but I really didn't enjoy this finale.

Gene going to prison for Janice's murder isn't just not deserving, it also makes very little sense. A real investigation and a proper lawyer would've gotten Gene acquitted easily.

That was more or less my point after last week’s show (Gene being confronted by Moss, et al). And this week didn’t help in that regard. The one thing that did change though was Gene “eliminating” Barry to help cover up the conspiracy (allegedly). So if they lump in murdering Barry it’s a little more plausible. Before that, not at all IMO.

The only thing that kind of makes it feasible is that in this show the cops and federal agents are all idiots. They had theories in earlier seasons that made no sense, believed Hank’s lies about the Raven, so they would have no problem believing this.

Yeah, they do use "cartoon logic" a lot on this show.

It was kind of underwhelming
Maybe they should have waited until 2024 or 2025 to wrap it up.
Didn't Sally kill somebody in season 3?

Yes, she confessed to John, her son, in the finale that she murdered someone. She's also been having hallucinations related to it this past season.
If you were asking because you're wondering why she's not also in jail, Barry got rid of the body, and it was someone out to kill Barry anyway, and it happened at Barry's place so most of the evidence goes back to Barry, if the body is even found.
There's maybe a bit of hypocrisy that with Sally telling Barry to turn himself in and not doing so herself, although that was specifically to clear Gene's name so he can go free, and there's not any real practical benefit to Sally clearing Barry of one murder, although apparently they didn't pin ANY murders on Barry? Sally maybe didn't want John to be completely without a parent after Barry's death too. She doesn't seem haunted by the murder anymore, so maybe confessing to John was enough to clear her conscience.
There's also an argument for Sally aiding and abetting a fugitive for 8 years, but that seems swept under the rug. With the new narrative of Barry being innocent, maybe it wasn't good optics to arrest the wife of a wrongly accused man.

Sally is not a good person. She’s not Barry, but she’s just as much a prisoner of her own delusional self image as him. You can see it in her final scene when her response to John saying “I love you” is to pump him for praise for her Our Town production. It’s just another example of the way Hollywood/acting preys on insecure people and leads them to ruin, like Gene throwing away everything for the promise of Daniel Day Lewis.

I'm OK with the ending, although I think it was silly that Fuchs wasn't so much as grazed during that point blank shootout between a dozen guys. That said, I'm glad it didn't end with Barry going full Rambo mode on both groups and walking away relatively unscathed

You can see him dive over John right as everyone started shooting. The upright people made better targets.

Another show I just can't seem to get into. I love Hader though, but just can't get into this.

Loved everything on this show except for the last 10 minutes.
Don’t know how they could have done a better ending but for me this one wasn’t it.
