While true, I have to admit I don't think it would've been that much of a loss if the show didn't make it. Is there anyone that holds up Family Matters as one of their favorite sitcoms?

Yes, and he (Carl Reiner) was in it from the first season.

He was a character, but he wasn't actually seen for the first few seasons.

Let's not forget Sam (Danny Cooksey) on Diff'rent Strokes in the category of adding a younger child when the main kids start to age.

Fair enough.

Best: Leonardo DiCaprio on Growing Pains. At least what it did for his career.

Law & Order had some great cast additions over the years:
Sam Waterston, S. Epatha Merkerson and Jerry Orbach were the most important ones, they shaped the show, at least for me.
Boston Legal: John Larroquette
Breaking Bad: Giancarlo Esposito, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks
Chicago Hope: Mark Harmon
ER: Linda Cardellini, Paul McCrane, Maura Tierney
Friday Night Lights: Michael B. Jordan, Matt Lauria
JAG: Catherine Bell, Patrick Labyorteaux
Justified: Walton Goggins (who started as a guest, in the first episode)
Smallville: John Glover
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Michael Dorn, Avery Brooks' beard
The Good Wife: Alan Cumming, Zack Grenier
The Sopranos: Joe Pantoliano
The X Files: Robert Patrick

Jimmy Smits in NYPD Blue, The West Wing, Sons Of Anarchy

Someone mentioned Miles O'Brien from Star Trek and while he did start in the pilot as an unnamed CONN officer, it was when they decided to actually make him a regular character that he really took off. And then went to a series lead on DS9.

You could also mention Captain Christopher Pike from Trek also, he was in the original TOS pilot but the character was brought back for Discovery (which helped that show immensely) and then his own spin off.

Hmm, maybe shows shouldn't try to just add randos but instead find one-off side characters that resonated with both the writers and the audience and use them to help shows that are floundering.

Maybe not the best, but a solid addition to a cast: Jesse Porter (Coby Bell) - Burn Notice (S4)

Another great addition:

Erica Durance: Smallville season 4. Played Lois until the final season. She started out a little rough and wasn't the best actress. Young, pretty Canadian TV actresses are mostly like that, but she grew into the part and actually became decent.

WORST!!!

Indira Varma and Janet Montgomery on the old FOX series Human Target.

Their additions completely destroyed a really fun action series. Chemistry was ruined and worst of all, they tried to make season 2 more lighthearted with them.

They had a great core cast with Mark Valley, Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley. Didn't need those two ladies. I scratch my head why FOX and WB sabotaged that show.

Can we all just agree that the second season of Human Target didn't happen?

Best addition not already mentioned: Bruce Boxleitner on Babylon 5

Worst : Dr. Kerry Weaver on ER. She reminded me of a couple of my senior residents, so it probably was a pretty accurate depiction of a young hospital physician, but man I hated her.

Doggett was a great character, and Robert Patrick gave it all he had, but the show was well into its decline. Annabeth Gish as Monica Reyes didn't help at all.

I propose Emma Peel for best new cast member.

They weren't really additions (not in the way this thread is intended anyway) - they were more like replacements.

Best:

Michael B. Jordan, Jurnee Smollett, Matt Lauria from Friday Night Lights

Danny Pino and Tracey Thoms from Cold Case.

I think we can pretty much just say all little kids (so not Urkel)who are introduced into a show to try to broaden the demographic, which includes Seven, Cousin Oliver, Scrappy Doo, even Leo on Growing Pains. It's harder to pick one that actually was a success.

I would like to add that horrible child actor who plays Beverly Rose on "The Conners". Top 5 worst child actors ever. Also, in addition to cousin Oliver, what about Ricky? That obnoxious kid who lived next store to the Partridge Family. Fuckiing hell, who was the brainchild behind that !?

Dratch, and WTFRU talking about?

And oh, this. Way too many cast changes on "Last Man Standing" IMO. I liked Amanda Fuller playing Kristin over Alexandra Krosney. I doubt Nick Jonas would have committed to playing Ryan weekly. He would have been great, but Jordan Masterson was really good. No clue why they made Boyd older overnight and changed actors. The original was one of the bette child actors and cute. His replacement was so bland. And while Molly McCook tried her best playing Mandy, it just didn't work. At all. Molly Ephraim was too fantastic in that role. But probably the absolute worst was adding the foreign exchange student (Jen). To make up for Kaitlyn Dever's absence from the show full time. It also didn't work.

Okay Dratch. And what am I talking about? She appeared in multiple cameo roles on season one instead of playing Jenna and was always a distraction

FWIW, I love Rachel Dratch and I didn't mind her contribution on "30 Rock". It made me laugh.

As far as I'm concerned, the show was criminally cancelled after the cliffhanger finale of the one and only season.

Seriously, do you think I did not know that?

REALLY! I am being serious. Do you, Decker, think that I, Count Dooku, based on all the posts you've read from me for so long, was not 100% aware of every Rachel Dratch appearance on 30 Rock, and fully informed about the backstory of the Jenna part being recast with Jane Krakowski before going to series?

I want to be offended, but I am more perplexed.

Well you asked what was I talking about, and highlighted where I said she played it so broad and put up a clip of her playing Jenna in the original pilot. So it sure seemed like you were unaware that she was on the show as a regular in the first season.
What did you actually mean then?
