Worst: That overly intense guy they added to Parks and Rec around season 6. Awful.

Rachel Dresch - 30 Rock. It was like she was on a completely different show than the rest of the cast. She played it so broad. The show ran much smoother without her.

And of course, Chuck Cuttingham

For “24”:

BEST - Mart Lynn Rajskub (season 3)

WORST - Freddie Prinze Jr (season 8), and I see I’m not the only one with that opinion.

Yes, and he (Carl Reiner) was in it from the first season.

Which Chuck Cunningham? Gavin O'Herlihy or Randolph Roberts?

For worst: Seth Meyers' brother as the replacement character for Eric on That '70s Show.

Jaleel White as Urkel on Family Matters. As much as some of the cast seemed to resent him for taking the spotlight, he saved a show that was on the verge of cancellation in the middle of their first season and helped it remain on the air for nine seasons.

Carrie had a sister for the first few episodes of King of Queens. The show was definitely better with her gone.

Re: BEST/WORST New Cast Member Addition

Yeah, TNG only really had one new main cast member, Diana Muldaur as Dr. Pulaski. Most people would consider her to be in the worst category. Of course, there were minor characters added like the O'Briens and Barclay. Actually, Miles O'Brien was there from sometime in the first season, I think.

Yeah, I hated that guy. And the Castles Of Dunshire (or whatever the fuck it was called) guy. What an unfunny addition.

The biggest one for me is Holly on The Office. Not only was she awful, she made Michael bad as well.

In addition to Seven added to Married with Children, there was a new kid added to Who's the Boss. I can't remember his name right now. I don't think he lasted a full season, and it seemed like he was gone as quick as he was added to the show. I don't know if he was written out of the show or just never mentioned again after the show came back from a hiatus or something.

Yeah, Randy on That 70s Show was ridiculously bad. So much so that he got a passing moment in the final episode after quickly getting shunted aside halfway through the season.

There were so many awful additions to Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 90210 throughout the years that they could be their own categories.

Oh I can't believe I forgot this

WORST!!!

Indira Varma and Janet Montgomery on the old FOX series Human Target.

Their additions completely destroyed a really fun action series. Chemistry was ruined and worst of all, they tried to make season 2 more lighthearted with them.

They had a great core cast with Mark Valley, Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley. Didn't need those two ladies. I scratch my head why FOX and WB sabotaged that show.

Cheers was batting .1000 when they added Frasier, Woody and Rebecca.
Big Bang did well adding Amy and Bernadette
Parks and Rec adding Chris and Ben was great.

Growing Pains addition of a new Seaver kid and then DiCaprio were bad. Although the show was in the shitter even before their arrival.

Always thought it was weird that the premise of 90210 was a family from Minnesota moving to Beverly Hills and adjusting to their new surroundings, people and lifestyle... a sort of fish-out-of-water story. But by the final season the whole family (parents, son and daughter) were no longer on the show. In fact, the parents and daughter were gone for the last 5 seasons.

All within the same show....

The Rookie
Worst - the new rookie
Best - Both Thorsen and Harper

I can appreciate going to bat for your friend and colleague but 30 Rock would've been way different if Dratch was a co lead instead of Jane Krakowski for sure.

I think we can pretty much just say all little kids (so not Urkel)who are introduced into a show to try to broaden the demographic, which includes Seven, Cousin Oliver, Scrappy Doo, even Leo on Growing Pains. It's harder to pick one that actually was a success.

Totally agree. Ruined that show. I remember the jokes comparing Varma's character Pucci to Poochie on the Simpsons. Pretty fitting.

A great addition to a show was Timmy to Rules of Engagement on CBS.

The best cast addition is Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine on Voyager.

It is not that she is great eye candy (she is!) but I find the first three seasons without her pretty much unwatchable. Somehow bringing Seven on board made all the other characters become more interesting. I know people like to shit on VOY, but just scanning the episodes list, I see there are so many good episodes that I remember in the second half of the series.

yes very difficult because children arent typically great actors and are restricted in the amount of time they can be onset.

Murphy Brown’s out of wedlock infant created a lot of controversy which helped the show boost its ratings.

Lady Lyanna Marmont on Game of Thrones

Maybe the best cast subtraction was Shelly Long leaving Cheers.

I've been watching some reruns on Decades at night, and I can't imagine the show lasting as long (or being as good) as it did with them stuck dealing with ups and downs of the Sam and Diane relationship.

And one by one, adding Woody, Frasier, Rebecca, and Lilith to the cast. Just fucking brilliant! Such a great (albeit completely unrealistic) show. :)

On Ally McBeal, Portia de Rossi and Lucy Liu were good additions. Also, Robert Downey Jr. for a bit, though he might have only been a guest star.

It's not only that (though that's a large part of it), it's usually a desperate grasp at changing the formula up enough to keep on the air, especially if the show is based around younger kids who have aged over the time that the show has been on the air.

He's annoying as fuck, but Family Matters wouldn't have made it past two seasons if Urkel wasn't added as full cast member.
