So, does JJ / Bad Robot have anything in the works at HBO now? It seems like everything that was in the works has been axed. $500mil well spent by WB I guess…

I could never get into Westworld, but I'm sorry to see it shitcanned before the final season could be made.

Makes me wonder if HBO has any plans to release the back half of The Nevers season one, if they're going to burn it and use it as a write-off like Batgirl.

Reportedly we’ll get it Q1 2023. Since that’s almost 2 years after part 1 debuted I suspect immediate cancellation afterwards. Delays suggest a lack of confidence. You just can’t sustain interest in a series when you take that long to air new episodes that have long been in the can, especially when seasons are so short now.

I have no doubt the huge delays between seasons tanked Westworld’s ratings.

Supposedly Westworld wasn’t canceled over budget, but with Zaslav in charge that doesn’t jive for me.

They fired Whedon and split up an already fairly complete season into two halves airing them 2 years apart. I can't imagine the new Discovery Owners care about this show unless its some massive hit.

Westworld has pretty much sucked after S1. It's like the showrunners ran out of steam and did not know how to move it forward.

Had a feeling that was coming. I enjoyed the series but I can't say I'm all that disappointed given the last episode. I was not eager to see a return to the Old West in any form and with some characters like Dolores it felt like they were just spinning their wheels. Was fun while it lasted. Wouldn't surprise me if they try to revive it in 10 years.

I thought we'd get a comprehensive end to everything. The show created so many unanswered questions as part of its feeling.

The Nolan’s initially wanted to produce 6 seasons.

This article says it was cancelled because viewership dropped to around 4M with HBO Max factored in. And it wasn’t worth the $160M plus price tag for 8 episodes that season 4 cost to HBO.

re: Westworld (S4E08) Surprise Series Finale - LEAVING HBOMAX - "Que Será, Será" 8/14/22

I haven't watched season 4 yet, and was planning to do so soon. With that said can anyone tell me if season 4 ends things nicely? I highly doubt everything would be nicely wrapped but is there huge cliffhangers that would of NEEDED another season.?

without spoilers of course.

Sure it never got as good as S1 but i still always enjoyed it so i want to know if i should even bother with S4

thanks!

A lot was wrapped up in season 4 and it doesn't end on some massive cliffhanger. If they were to have done a season 5, it would have been a reset of sorts.

Season 4 was a really good season IMO and if you're a fan of the series, I think it's ending will be satisfactory, but that's a matter of opinion.

And the main cast is still getting paid millions of dollars in salary for unproduced Season 5. Yea… this show just got way too expensive for the amount of people watching.

Did anyone really care though if it's a world with no humans and no hosts? What are the stakes or rooting interests at that point? The best outcome is a happy simulation in a computer? Man I hated those last two episodes so much.

This reminds me I need to finish the series. I quit early in season three. I just didn’t care about non western Westworld.

I've yet to watch this current season since I don't have HBO Max, but I loved the previous 3 and plan to get the physical release of this season. Sad they won't get to make their intended fifth and final season.

My thoughts as well. The show was very nearly there anyway, and the end of S4 made it complete and anything beyond pointless. Normally when something like this happens (for instance, Deadwood) I hold out hope there will at least be a feature length epilogue/series finale. But I have no such thoughts about this show ending.

Their budget and ambition really outkicked their ability to come up with a compelling story past the first two seasons. And yeah, airing a whopping 8 episodes over 4 years prior to S4 did not help any. Many of the original 12 million viewers probably forgot the show even existed.

And it also doesn't help when the creators sign a 9 figure deal with Amazon after 2 seasons. Even if they were still attached that kind of money is bound to change your focus and level of commitment.

I kinda forget. Did the last of humanity (the outliers) die?

Nothing is going to immediately kill them. We don’t know how large that population is and if their sole source of food is stealing from the now deserted cities. They could start dirt farming, if they can survive until harvest season. Species survival also assumes women will have babies to repopulate, but they might want to doom humanity instead.

Bernard, who has a Dr. Strange like ability to know all possible outcomes in the future, informs Maeve that there is no way they can be victorious and humans will die out in a few years. So if you take the view that humans could still survive, you have to believe that omniscient Bernard (who so far has been right about everything) is wrong about something this unlikely and crucial.

Assumptions are everything in a simulation, and we don’t know which ones Bernard is making. If it takes years there must be, at a minimum, food, water, and shelter, otherwise they’d all be dead in a couple of weeks.

I mean they are already living in an outpost with food, shelter and water out in the desert, right?

The take away is if the show runners had any interest in continuing humanity in the show's reality, they could have Bernard say something like Dr Strange did, that there is only a miniscule chance of success. He didn't, he was unequivocal : we can not survive, but maybe a tiny bit of humanity can survive inside of the computer simulation.

re: Westworld (S4E08) Surprise Series Finale - LEAVING HBOMAX - "Que Será, Será" 8/14/22

The first season to me was television perfection. Unfortunately, the premise made it so they couldn't keep going back to that well, and the path the show took was too different than where it started. I'm not saying it wasn't interesting or even good, it's just that once you took the West out of Westworld you were just left with a very high-brow sci-fi show, leaving behind what made the first season so special.
