Westworld (S4E08) - Series Finale - "Que Será, Será" - 8/14/22

Last episode of the season. No word yet on a future season. I mentioned in the last thread that Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy are currently filming their new show for Amazon "Fallout" so it's probably unlikely we would get another season in 2023.

I found it entertaining and they did wrap up a lot. But, I'm not sure where they're going should they get a final season.

https://deadline.com/2022/08/westwor...1878/#comments

Lisa Joy confirmed that Hale is indeed dead. Dolores/Christina is in some kind of host afterlife. Maeve, Stubbs and Bernard are all dead in this current form. Joy said some of the characters may return in another form, but she's going to keep certain ones dead for good. I don't think we'll be seeing Frankle/C again as they basically wrapped up her story.

and Joy does say that HBO hasn't renewed the show yet.

"Fucking camper"

If Hale is dead that than William should be also since she destroyed his pearl as well, though I guess they can retcon whoever they want into the sublime.

Eh, I guess the finale was OK. But I can't really get too interested in watching a season set within a computer processor.

For a season I really enjoyed the finale felt largely flat for me. The only aspect I was invested in was Caleb and his daughter. I thought that was nicely done. The stuff with Dolores never hit for me this season. Every scene with her was endless talking that puts me to sleep. A bummer not having Bernard (aside from his recording) or Maeve in the finale. Stubbs going out like that was so sudden and a bummer too. I did like that final image of Charlotte self destructing. Sort of meh on a 5th season especially if its going to be the Old West again. That feels like a step back. I really don't know what's left for them to say at this point.

I swear I almost cheered and screamed when William said "Fuckin' Camper". I hate Campers/Snipers in games.

As far as the Finale, Meh. It was good, but felt like it was going deeper down the Metaphysical Rabbit Hole and I'm not sure I'm interested in taking that ride further in. Maybe if they take another long break i'll be interested but as of now it's like, 'where is this going?" What does she mean, "One more time"?

What a mess of a finale and a show. When you need to have Hale basically narrating the whole episode by talking to herself, you know you wrote a shitty plot.

Yeah - I love sniping. I can win just fine running and gunning but I find sniping so much more rewarding. Keeps people on their toes.

IMO, 7 of the 8 episodes were really good to great. While the season finale didn't quite stick the landing, I thought overall this was a good season. I'd give it a B+ overall. I found each week compelling.

If they don't get a final season, I won't lose any sleep. But, if they do, then maybe a 2 year break like before will be good to give them the time they need to make it right.

So if all humans are dead, what is really the point of some Old West simulation? AI is an amazing concept that I think the show has done a major job with, but am I really invested in whether the machines can figure out how to survive in a machine only world? Meh.

I would watch a 5th season, but my care-o-meter is not really off the charts about it.

There's still the outliers, right? I wonder if the Westworld 2.0 simulation will weed out the bad hosts, and they will help rebuild the world with the remaining humans?

They have the greater problem that the dam and the servers themselves need maintenance, and with nearly all the humans dead who is left to do it? They all go extinct in a few years when the power fails and the servers start glitching. If they want to go back to the real world who will construct the bodies since all that infrastructure has the same problem?

If you want to get technical, there are other issues with Hoover Dam. There are invasive species of snails that grow in the water intake pipes. If they are not regularly cleaned out, eventually the water flow to the turbines stops and your electricity stops as well. Saw that on Life After People which seems to be where this show is going.

The white faceless Drone Hosts can take care of all of maintenence needed. The Host maker machines can keep spitting' out Drones for years

re: Westworld (S4E08) -- Surprise Series Finale -- "Que Será, Será" -- 8/14/22

I really hope that was not the series finale as it was a disappointment after a fantastic season. I had very low expectations going into this season and the show really knocked it out of the park for 7/8 of the season. Not a huge fan of Charolette and even if she was in Thor I have trouble viewing her as a brawler.

Clementine was odd as hell, they did a great job making her look insectile in how she moved around in that episode. Nice to see her one more time. Also "Christina/ Delores was kind of boring this season, especially in the last episode. It's really too bad they tripped up with this episode and muddied things plotwise. It feels a bit of a mess.

Did humans escape Earth or are they all dead?

Also, are we done with the real world and onto strictly the sublime?

Man I was so happy that season 4 was good again for most of its run. Then these last two episodes choose the worst possible conclusion. All humans are dead and not even robots to take over? Just a simulation remains? Is that really the best they could come up with? I am really disappointed in how things ended up this season. Not what I was expecting.

I was just wondering how there are stakes anymore. Maybe something will happen in the final season. World is over. If the whole simulation was lost I'm not sure I'd care.

Any chance Anthony Hopkins wakes up at the end and it was all a dream?

Looking forward to the conclusion. I have my doubts that anything can be as great as that first season.

Yeah, thought this was pretty mediocre. So my understanding is that all the hosts and humans in the real world are all dead (except the outliers). And that now the story focuses on AI playing some dangerous game for survival in an AI wild west world?

Not really feeling the plot anymore

re: Westworld (S4E08) -- Surprise Series Finale -- "Que Será, Será" -- 8/14/22

I read an article in Forbes that made an interesting point. this episode can easily serve as a series finale and the show would just loop back into season 1 in the original WW or it can set the ground for season 5. It does seem like the ultimate Star Wars prequel with there being no real stakes anymore with all of mankind dead and everything happening in a simulation so who cares if they kill someone off, they will be back anyway. I will check out the next season if there is one eventually just to get closure. they more or less earned my viewership back with putting together seven strong episodes. I may rewatch the series to see how well it pulls together with a good season 4 and how the narrative holds up with that bookend. I've never revisited season 3 and hardly remember much about it other than its set in a future world and blah blah blah.

I seriously can't decide if I'm upset about that or not. On one hand it would have been interesting to see where they were actually planning on ending the series. On the other hand the finale left me so disappointed and confused as to what they wanted to say, and more importantly why I should care if there was no Humanity left in the world. It was super disappointing because most of season 4 was actually pretty good but man what a let down there at the end. It's a bummer.
