One last kick in the teeth from 2021.

The Golden Girls was a formative show in my adolescence and I also enjoyed her work on Mama’s Family.

RIP

Jesus Fucking Christ. Betty White. This year sucks.

I watched her in the Mary Tyler Moore show. I watched her in Password (I knew the was fucking Alan Ludden). My wife and I absolutely LOVE the movie The Proposal, mainly because of Betty's role. She is an American icon.

Fuck. What's really spooky is that I was just talking about her with my parents when I visited them yesterday, saying that she was gonna be 100 next month and still seemed to be doing great. I cursed her.

Re: RIP Betty White - Dead at 99

OH SO CLOSE!!!

I really thought she'd hit 101. She was so close to 100 I thought FOR SURE she'd make it.

Damn. That sucks.

And with that, the entire main cast of The Mary Tyler Moore Show is gone. (No, I don't count John Amos, as Gordy was just a recurring character in the early seasons, never a regular.)

I did get a laugh out of the fact that the longest living survivor was also the oldest cast member. That was awesome! Good for her!

I just wish they could all still be with us, so Betty could celebrate 100 with that amazing cast.

And let's not forget the great role she played on Boston Legal! She was awesome on that show!

So is Norman Lear the next celebrity expected to make 100 now? It won't be as big of a deal for most people as Betty White though. A few more that still have a while to go to get there: Dick Van Dyke, Mel Brooks, William Shatner. Probably a few more in that range that I can't think of immediately.

Re: RIP Betty White - Dead at 99

I’ll say that I was never a huge fan of Betty White for her shows, but I liked her as a personality. Sad to see her go, especially so close to her 100th birthday and to close out 2021. RIP.

Not that I want it to happen but I was trying to think of major older iconic celebrities. All that you mentioned for sure. Shatner will hit hard when it happens as I’ve been a Star Trek fan since I was young. In addition to those you named I would add Bob Barker. He’s 98 so he’s probably getting close to the end unfortunately.

There are a number of celebrities who are over 100 currently, but they're not as well known as the celebs you mentioned.
Marsha Hunt is currently 104 years old.

Yep. It still says the Kieran Culkin episode, but it’s Betty White and Jay Z.

I didn't watch this one when it first aired. Seems like they gave the regular cast the night off since Molly Shannon, Ana Gasteyer, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph were in every sketch.

Re: RIP Betty White - Dead at 99

I take some solace that Betty died in her sleep peacefully as her body just gave out on her.

For those who might be interested, the 1-season Golden Girls spinoff "The Golden Palace" is coming to Hulu on January 10th

https://collider.com/golden-girls-sp...treaming-hulu/

Betty, Rue and Estelle returned for it. It aired almost 30 years ago and hasn't been seen since. I'm sure most here never saw it.

Re: RIP Betty White - Dead at 99

I read the other day that by dying so close to her 100th bday, being beloved and dying on New Years Eve her death is likely one of the most toasted deaths of all time. So Cheers to Betty!

I think you're forgetting the age of most forum members.
I was never a big fan of Golden Girls (didn't hate it, but it was just ok for what it was. And half the episodes dealt with someone visiting them)... but The Golden Palace wasn't good at all. The premise was dumb and everything felt off, and at that point it was just tired.

This has been my criticism of the show since it premiered; how many family members can they have pop in for a visit? It got old really quickly.

I tried watching it as I was a Golden Girls fan, but it just wasn't any good at all.
