I think at this point Mercer and Grayson would be seen as having been instrumental in the saving the Union from the Kaylon, and Ed's would not be considered a pity appointment by anyone.

Was that a Halston Sage cameo or just clever CGI?

I think that was just footage from the first season episode with Topas added.

Am I mistaken, or was that entire B-story about the archaeological discovery just completely pointless in an episode that ran way over an hour?

Yeah that's Alara. I would highly doubt it was a filmed cameo. Since it was just her in the background standing there they wouldn't really need her in person. Since everything is recorded digitally, it wouldn't be a problem manipulating still people.

Klyden has done several things that should have gotten him kicked off the ship or in jail. He's an awful character.

I thought it was an excellent episode and the subject matter was handled very well. Had a very ST:TNG feel. Discovery could learn from The Orville how to handle timely topics. Hope that's the last we see of Klyden, but I kinda doubt it.

Time for the Doc to get a new love interest since Bortus is available. She does love the aliens. ☺️

Re: The Orville: New Horizons (Hulu) -- premieres 6/2/22

I'm surprised a lot of people seemed to like this episode. I liked it quite a bit. Even though it was "slow" I think it was well done. Even the extra run time I thought was well utilized to let moments breathe. I think Peter Macon as Bortus is underrated. It's not easy to convey emotion in someone who's supposed to be a one dimensional joke character. I thought Klyden was well handled. Even though he is and always was the bad guy they did write him pretty well to serve as a foil for the opposite POV. And in universe he does bring up some valid points and does seem to have Topa's best interest in heart...right up until the third act with his final fall telling Topa he wishses he was never born. Despite this initially being created as a parody of Star Trek I really felt the emotions in that moment. I also really like the moment Klyden brings up Kelly's screw up with her being worshiped as a god and wondering if she was playing god. Because at the beginning it really felt like she was meddling where she shouldn't have but the extra run time helped show how it really was a moral quandry and the difficulty in her decision. I also like how it wasn't only her that was involved and Bortus is the one that sent the passwords. It was also a nice touch how in the end Isaac revealed he didn't do it for Topa but for his own standing on the ship and therefor increased efficiency. I feel like the writers of this show really know their characters well.

Struggling to get through the Topa episode. The first episode about this character was fine. But the writers rehashing the exact same story again? What???

It's a continuation of the story. But yeah it's not going to be everyone's favorite.

I liked this episode. It reminded me a lot of the social issues that TNG covered during their run on TV. I think this season would be more well received if their tone in the first two seasons were the same. They started out being a spoof and everything was done for comedic effect. Now they are trying to be more serious but people are waiting for punchlines that never happen.

"Twice in a Lifetime"

Probably the best episode of this season thus far. The old humor from the previous seasons is back in this episode. Predictable what was going to happen once you knew Gordon was sent back in time.

In an interview with Seth, he said the 2nd half of this season has more comedy. He also argued the tone of the show hasn't changed.

Yeah, Twice in a Lifetime is a great episode. Yes, part of it is utterly predictable, but it's what Seth did with that that makes it work. This was a really well written, well rounded episode. Fantastic stuff. The last three episodes have been great. The first three this season? Not so much, but after that this season really got going.

Grimes singing to open the show and all I can think of is that it is Steve Smith singing

Re: The Orville: New Horizons (Hulu) -- premieres 6/2/22

This episode hits a bunch of common tropes of Sci-Fi shows all in one episode, -Time Travel, the crew ending up in our present time, an actor that wears prosthetics appearing without "make-up" (or a suit in this case). However, it's the best episode of the current season. It was nicely emotional, though I thought the last ten minutes disappointing, with risks and heartaches too easily dismissed to get to an end.

The tone is pretty much the same, there are just fewer attempts at funny stuff.

That was two very odd cameos on the TV show Gordon was watching.

Overall, that was a good episode. Except for the fact that nobody ever until that exact moment has realized without the quantum bubble you can travel in time.

I'm out after episode 4. I fast forward through the CGI ship maneuvers. Just tell the story, unless it's about Trump and abortion. If I wanted that I'd listen to NPR.
