The story aspect in Wheel of Time is what I prefer most to Witcher. I like both, but I just prefer WoT more. I think Witcher took a drop in story for season 2. I found the first season much more compelling. I like the world building in Wot and I can see them setting things up for future events. I prefer them both to Foundation, and that was the one I was most looking forward to. I'm a huge fan of Asimov's Foundation and Robot series. I don't like the way they adapted it. We have a Lord of the Rings and a Game of Thrones series both on the way. Looks like we'll have plenty of fantasy series to go around for a while. Am I the only one who liked Carnival Row?

Which was too little too late and unsatisfying.
Book Readers did not oversell the Wheel of Time, its just really difficult to get through the first book and get all the events, worldbuilding, metaphysics, and exposition into 8 episodes. After Book 1 it diverts strongly from LOTR territory and becomes absolutely epic.

That said the first season was not really that strong. High hopes for Season 2 which has a much more straightforward arc.

Well, then the show failed to make that clear.

Part of the problem with the show's visual quality. We get too much of a "nice look at the sets". The lighting is really bad. There's no depth, no contrast, no context. Everything is just evenly lit, perfectly visible, even when the source is supposed to flickering candles. It makes every scene look like a stageplay and not a real world place.

The sets looked like sets. The very very diverse cast looked like new actors playing dress up. Costumes did not look lived in, worn down. Really was amateur hour. And that doesn't cover the paper thin, unengaging storyline.

I think that's it -- the world did not feel "lived in". Kind of like the Star Wars prequels, in a sense. Great looking sets, but they still felt like sets.

Also the revelation that the local Peddler was secretly a servant of "The Dark One" has exactly zero impact. We saw him in one small scene, once, in the first episode. Out of sight, out of mind. Big yawner.

Yeah, that's kind of a thing, and the Star Wars prequels are a good example, especially when compared with the OT.

When you're making these high fantasy tv series and movies, you really need to make their world a living, vibrant place.

The Game of Thrones world felt old and lived-in, like Winterfell and the Red Keep and The Wall felt like they had been standing for centuries, and you could feel the history in them. The clothes they wore felt worn, the armor and weapons felt like it had seen innumerable battles.

It's kind of ironic that the fantasy worlds that are newer, cleaner, and well-pressed look cheaper (and probably are) than the grungier, grimier worlds.

If I could pile on, the stakes also seemed very small. In those last episodes when they were supposedly fighting the final battle, they had this tiny little army (outside their tiny little town with no suburbs) and five magic women. Didn't seem that massive.

The only part of this season that I found genuinely surprising and unique was that flashback to 3000 years ago and the previous Dragon Reborn, where they show the shot of the city with ships flying around.

I can't remember if there was exact dialogue at other points but we saw Nynaeve deal with Logain when experienced Aes Sedai could not. And Logain said that his power paled compared to hers, which was like the sun.

Rand is the dragon reborn but the show runners decided to side line him. Random 3 women and Nynaeve and Egwene defeated thousands of Trollocs while Rand had 2 dream sequences and an awkward “final battle.” We know more about Siuan and her dad than we do about Rand and his dad. They spent almost an entitre episode on a random minor character who killed himself but did nothing to advance the plot. Moraine spent 20 years looking for the dragon reborn but decides to let him peace out and go off to wherever. It is some bad story choices. I am not hopeful for season 2 at all.

In the books, Rand basically deals with the events at the end all by himself. I can see why the showrunners wanted to change that up to include more of their actors. But the book is right there if anyone prefers it that way.

Yeah but a bit of throwaway dialogue is not enough to establish sonething so important to the plot.

The characters displayed their powers several times during the season, especially Nynaeve.

When they got to the Waygate outside of Matt not going they could have adhered pretty closely to the book for the ending. But they just changed so many things. I really enjoyed the show up to the last episode and then it was sort of like WTF? Changes are not better (unlike say the Whitecloaks which was). In hindsight keeping the mystery of the DR hurt the first season. You could have had the audience know but not Moiraine and used that very effectively narratively.

That said, apparently just showing the 7 Towers of Malkier was a huge battle so who knows how many changes were dictated by Amazon.

I am actually really optimistic about Season 2 as it has a totally different vibe and plotline. It should be very exciting and introduce some incredibly important new characters. It is the book that most reads like a movie script

Renewed for a 3rd season before season 2 airs.

Have not started this series yet. Way behind on a lot of new series.

Surprised.

I think the consensus in this thread is you could skip it. Nobody was enamored with the final product. Some good concepts and scenes, but largely fell flat.

I’m somewhat lukewarm on the first season, but am hopeful it’ll get better. There’s a lot of great stuff to mine from the books. I realize it’s not an entirely fair comparison, but based on the first season of this and having read the books, I have higher hopes for it eventually being great than I do for the new GoT or LotR prequels, based on what we’ve seen so far of them.

It's not terrible but they changed some stuff much for the worse, and spent almost an entire episode on a side character not even in the books. Production values were just OK.

However, if they can get back to the story as in the books it should get quite compelling. The first season was really affected by Covid as well.

Re: The Wheel of Time (Amazon) -- premieres 11/19/21

Season 2 is coming September 1st.

https://deadline.com/2023/05/the-whe...235378242/amp/

Prime Video has set September 1 for the Season 2 premiere of fantasy epic series The Wheel of Time. It comes almost two years after the series’ first season scored one of the streamer’s biggest premieres. We’re also getting a first look at the second season in some new images released today.

Based on the best-selling Robert Jordan fantasy series The Wheel of Time, a humble farm boy, Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski), learns he is The Dragon Reborn—a dangerous figure from history destined to save the world … or break it. Desperate to protect him from the Dark One, an army of powerful sorceresses must reckon with his burgeoning power and encroaching madness. The Wheel of Time turns, and the Last Battle approaches. Though Rand thought he destroyed the Dark One, evil is not gone from the world. In Season Two, threats new and very old seek out the young friends from the Two Rivers, now scattered over the world. The woman who found and guided them is now powerless to help, and so they must find other sources of strength. In each other, or themselves. In the Light … or the Dark.

Not a huge deal yet it would be cool if eight-episode seasons like this could be once a year and not almost two. Likely reasons for that this time around.

Guess this means I need to try and watch the first season. The wife is a huge fan of the novels (I've never cracked one), but I heard not a peep about the show after she watched it. Not a good sign. But if I get caught up at least this is something we could watch together.

They say they want 8 seasons, but that won't happen if it takes 16 years to do.

If they can do that in ten years. That's a long time for something like sixty-four episodes.

I think I watched this. I don't remember. I'm not even interested enough to scroll through the thread to see if I posted here.

I bet I watched this. Isn't there like a big gate in a field toward the end?

I'm not the epitome of viewership, but if my attitude is anything like a lot of other potential viewers, they're in trouble.
