Sweeney was an openly gay actor at a time when coming out was bold and controversial, so kudos to him.
But on SNL, he almost exclusively played women or exaggeratedly stereotypical gay men, which I don't think anyone would consider a breakthrough in the show's representation of what it means to be an out, gay man. Sweeney was the show’s first openly gay cast member, making him a target for Chase’s brand of homophobic humor. “Oh, you’re the gay guy, right?” Chase said upon meeting Sweeney. “I’ve got an idea for a sketch for you. How about we say you have AIDS, and we weigh you every week?” https://www.cracked.com/article_4318...n-started.html |

Hader was in the same cast at the same time as Wiig and Sudeikis. If you mention one, then you need to include the other two. And I think Samberg and Davidson would probably qualify as superstars as much as McKinnon.
I think Samberg left before Hader? Davidson was not a superstar on SNL since he did not have a big bag of repeating or memorable characters, What he did outside of SNL has gotten him the fame with his past dating life. |
Re: SNL General Discussion Thread
You know, in regards to Yang and Wickline's hires being due to their sexuality, I actually think Lorne is always hiring "offbeat" comedians in order to be "edgy". And there's some history in that, the entire show was predicated on being different than standard comedy. Not ready for prime time. Aside from the time in the 80s when he hired somewhat established comedians like Billy Crystal and Martin Short, it's always been about unknowns and non-traditional players. Sometimes it's worked. Comedy evolves and changes. Shit, there was a time you could stick your head through a hole in the wall and say "You bet your bippy" and that was the height of comedy.
I bring this up because I saw a blurb over the weekend about a Tik-Tokker who is rumored to be joining the cast. I know nothing about her, never heard of her, but one thing I know for sure is that Tik Tok is NOT the home for people standing in front of a brick wall telling jokes, or doing typical comedy. I'm just saying I don't think SNL is ticking off boxes for representation, although even if they are, what's the harm in it? If anything, it broadens the amount of comedy you can do, as you can now do a "gay" sketch, whatever that might be, without a straight cast member acting stereotypically gay. If Bowen Yang decides to swish it up for a sketch, you won't have GLAAD breathing down your neck about it being an offensive performance. (and just an FYI, I love Wickline when she and Marcello Hernandez are the "People you can't believe are a couple". Everything else, not so much. But that bit is an absolute winner) |
Re: SNL General Discussion Thread
If nothing else I remember who Wickline is which is like half the battle.

I’m not arguing that he isn’t third in the pecking order but would definitely take Longfellow over Dismukes and think given a few seasons he could even be better than Mikey Day.

Re: SNL General Discussion Thread
Dismukes finally won me over on the Jumanji sketch from a couple years back.

Dismukes has become one of my favourites.

At least they didn't do the thing Chevy Chase wanted him to do...

Plus I think he might have ripped off Howard Stern with that idea. |
Re: SNL General Discussion Thread
Emil Wakim and Aristotle Athari both of Middle Eastern descent got the quick boot but the white guys can stay on forever??
It is shocking they have not gotten a Indian cast member after all these years and they have plenty of people who could fill that void. |

Re: SNL General Discussion Thread
I thought this week was supposed to have news about cast changes coming from SNL. The two departures have been announced by the actors themselves.

Re: SNL General Discussion Thread
The issue with SNL isn't the color or gender of the person delivering the material -- it's the shit material to being with. I suppose some skits couldn't be done unless a Latino, for example, was playing the part (Domingo); but most could -- and it is the writing that is lacking.

Re: SNL General Discussion Thread
Based on Longfellow's departure, I am going to assume that this means Jost or Che, or both, will be back doing WU, since Longfellow was long rumored to be the top choice to take one of the spots at the desk if they left.
