Frosk never said anything to me. They couldn't repeat lightning in a bottle and it was dumb to try.

So they were paying content creators/influencers $25,000 to $30,000 per day to be guests on shows. That's why they went under.

G4 is a perfect example as how top industry executives don't understand what makes the audience tick yet they want to monetize on the trend the old fashioned way. This revival would have worked if the decision makers had taken some of what worked in the past (video game and console previews, live shows from comic and gaming cons, video game review shows) with the newer (things that happened after G4 shut down the first time around) competitive gaming, Twitch streams, more social media oriented world of today. I mean, Xavier Woods has run a very successful gaming show under the WWE banner, so bringing that to G4 should have been something easy, yet didn't happen.

I hope someone gets the rights to G4 and does it right. It's a franchise that has potential if it's run the right way.

Besides nostalgia I can't think of a single thing the G4 brand would bring to the table. Is there really a niche that's not already filled by something else that's readily available and more relevant to the younger audience?

There’s a lot of area in the competitive gaming market that needs exposure/coverage that a channel like G4 could have provided.

Also, since the demise of the original G4 and the rebranding of Spike TV, live coverage of things like SDCC and the Video Game awards have basically disappeared. We get reports on social media of what happened but no love coverage of these events, which were pretty entertaining for those who couldn’t make it.

Like I mentioned, Xavier Woods has been able to do a very entertaining and popular gaming show for WWE, so doing something similar for G4 should have been a priority. Having celebrities compete in gaming events or something along those lines, should have been something so easy to do yet they never did it

I feel like coverage of SDCC and others are better than ever, at least for the larger events, especially with what seems like a change in policy to actually allow companies to release the footage (not the exclusive footage but the panels at least). I agree that I loved that kind of coverage when it was on, it just seems like that we get all these different fans eager to provide the info, and even news outlets dedicating time to it.

The thing with UpUpDownDown is that I'm sure it and many other youtube shows runs on a shoestring budget compared to whatever setup G4 had. I'm sure Woods does some kind of revenue sharing with his guests who are also his friends. It seems like G4 was spending money like a 90s dot com.

Re: G4 Network to relaunch in 2021

The Frosk rant alienated half of whatever available audience was interested, and that was right off the bat. But while that probably just hastened the inevitable, it wasn't responsible for the failure of the G4 revival. There really was no reason for this channel to exist in 2022. Developing content like it's still two decades ago with massive overhead whilst coasting on little more than brand awareness is never a good move.

I think the bigger issue is that the primary gaming demographic has moved beyond cable viewing and packaged content. So what they had left were mostly Gen Xers and curious leftovers tuning in for nostalgia, which isn't the stuff of advertising dreams.

I am surprised they pulled the plug so quickly. Tells me the executives were never really confident about G4's prospects and didn't attempt any last-minute makeovers to salvage the channel.

For me personally, the lack of a dedicated G4 streaming app hurt it. I watched the cable channel all the time in its hay day and I just didn't think about it as a random channel on YouTube. But at app icon would have reminded me more.

There's so much content on Youtube. I watch a lot of it. TV is barely going to survive, let alone a tiny niche brand.

They should just do Attack of the Show on their own Youtube channel. Monetize that and forget about TV.

And don't pay influences to show up. I know the business, and paying for clout is normal. But G4 should be getting visits for free (or maybe a basic travel expense).

G4 of 2021 is not the G4 from the 2000s. No one is showing up for free on some random stream that might break 4 digits of viewers.
