A shame really.

But if the streaming service that had this was connected to a network, the network would've gotten it, I think. Certainly if Disney + had this they would let ABC air it.

Just playing devil's advocate here. Maybe the contract that Peanuts Productions had with ABC expired and Apple put in a bid that was more than what ABC was willing to pay and also tied in with their current Peanuts productions.

It's obviously a business move by the Peanuts production company and maybe ABC didn't think the specials were worth the money to them anymore? Apple is loading up on content, including Peanuts. Is it really dick move? Is there some unwritten rule that they should respect that these should always air on network TV? I mean if ABC said, if you want them, go ahead it's yours. The Peanuts company now has more money to be able to produce more specials.

I'm not saying ABC deserves to air them, I'm just saying Disney owns ABC so if they bought the rights for Disney+ I'm sure they would've also negotiated the same for their network. this was contradicting the claim that everything was going to go behind paywalls.

Obviously Apple doesn't have a network and wants all eyes on their streaming service so exclusivity matters.

I have them on Blu, Streaming and now Apple TV+.

But I agree they should still be aired, even if just once a year, on free tv. -rolleyes-

If Apple wants to have the classic Peanuts features and shows (which rarely if ever air anyways) as well as the rights to produce new content then that’s fine, but I think it would be nice if they still allowed the holiday specials to air as they’re staples of many households.

I went ahead and ordered the 4k set so I'll have the digital copies too to replace my DVD set.

There are dozens of Peanuts specials (and movies) that aren't shown on tv any more that could be Apple exclusives. I think the only ones that were shown yearly are Great Pumpkin, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Making an exception for those three would be a nice good will gesture since it's really a tradition for these to be shown on broadcast tv.

It's really not the "holiday" season without It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving , A Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman on tv.

If they still let the specials air on free tv, while also giving you the option to stream the holiday shows, there would be no outrage. Apple has more than enough revenue, where they should not be pulling petty crap like this. Especially during a pandemic.

Even if the specials were just a condition of getting the license, the most they would do is allow ABC to buy the rights to air it, and if ABC balks then too bad. I don't see them having an obligation of any kind to throwing a bone to network tv for cheap.

I just think with the tradition those specials have it would be decent to allow one of the networks the rights to air them.

Will Linus now be trying to capture a pic of the Great Pumpkin on his new iPhone?

Agree with this part 100%. Yes, streaming is nice and the future, but regardless it’s a nice option for folks who are older or just traditional and still have a cable package of some sort (or even if they just get the local channels over the air) for specials like these to air. There’s a reason they’ve been showing these since the sixties.

And another piece of my childhood dies. Generations of Americans have watched the primary Peanut specials aired on television every year. The Christmas and Halloween episodes are practically Americana staples, something most Americans have shared together at some point.

Network television becomes more and more irrelevant each passing day. I don't think it will be long before the other beloved Christmas specials get snatched up by streaming services looking for headline content.

I guess the Grinch of this world really can steal Christmas from everyones heart.

Just buy them on disc and don't pay a monthly fee to watch them.

Hope Rudolph and the Rankin Bass Xmas specials remain on over the air TV and Freeform.

You think my 87yr old mother knows how to play a 4k disc or Apple TV+? She only knows how to play whatever is offered over cable and her cable box.

I'm not sure why Apple seems to be getting attacked in this thread. Apparently no network thought they were worth enough to the bottom line to outbid Apple. Not Apple's fault. Blame the folks that stopped watching on free tv.

How bad does she want to watch it? Does she have a DVD player? It's just much more expensive.

Actually, all the animated holiday specials still perform really well in the ratings. Hence the reason Apple outbid Disney to gobble up exclusive rights for their stupid streaming platform.

If the ratings were so good, why did Disney not bid to keep them on ABC and Disney+? Seems to me like they didn't consider the programs very valuable.

Apple obviously already had some sort of deal with the Peanuts company in place. One of their launch programs with Apple TV+ last year was Peanuts in Space.

It’s possible the Peanuts company wanted to make a comeback and were offered a huge amount by Apple that they would have been foolish to turn down.

As much as I love Peanuts I’m not so sure that it has the mass appeal nowadays outside of the specials to really make a comeback. Can’t say I blame Disney if a deal hinged on new content.

Good luck with that. Maybe some older people are capable of figuring out how to run DVD players or whatever, but working in technical support I know the problems these people face with their regular cable as is. Let alone getting them to operate something else is very difficult for a lot of them. Between figuring out how to change the input on their tv, which first has to be explained and if they can even grasp that changing it is very difficult. Then using the correct remote and whatnot.

Timber 10-21-20 09:36 AM

re: Peanuts holiday specials moving to Apple TV+

People that can't operate remotes are outside of any desirable demo I would think. Not trying to be an ass but isn't that what broadcast TV has been about since forever?

You're probably right, I just find it ironic that for my kids, finding out when it airs and then tuning in to watch it on network tv is probably a lot harder for them than just finding it on a streaming service (if we have that service, of course).

I mean it makes sense for the younger generation. They aren’t used to following things on a schedule. They’re used to having things available on demand. There’s probably less crossover that knows about both scheduled tv programming and modern streaming content.
