Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
I was vaguely aware that they licensed this, but I hadn't been following it (I guess the movie is in limbo?). They released a trailer:
Art looks spot on to the comic and they do a good job not giving away the premise. Also that cast... |
Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
Wow. Nice.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
I enjoyed the comic, so I'll give it a shot.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
Oh nice! I read the first few trades a few years ago and really enjoyed it, maybe I'll try to start reading it again in anticipation of this.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
I loved the comic series although sometimes I had issues with Kirkman's uneven writing for some of the characters. I'll definitely check it out.

Latest trailer for the series dropped yesterday. It looks good.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
It does but they spoiled everything with that trailer and the promo posters.

I’ll skip the trailer then ... release date?
|
Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
I’m just one TBP away from finishing the series but I’ve been thinking I should just do a complete reread since it’s been a while and I don’t remember what was happening. Maybe this will help motivate me.

The first three episodes are up now.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
Is this a Watchmen/Dark Knight Returns kinda thing?

It's not like a dark deconstruction of superheroes or anything like that. It is a subversion of the normal Superman story and it is less PG than it looks, but it's still a bright costume superhero story at its heart. I say this having not seen the episodes but having read Kirkman's comic. |
Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
Omni Man doesn’t wear a mask, doesn’t everyone know who he is?
|
Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
I'll wait until they all drop before I watch.
I still haven't watched The Expanse S5 yet. |
Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
This show will lull you with a false sense of mediocrity, but then the end of episode 1 is shocking, if you’re unfamiliar with the comics like me. I was hooked after that.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
I didn't know anything about the source material before coming into it, but read some reviews about it being for mature audiences, similar to The Boys. Well, I love superhero stuff, and love The Boys, so gave it a shot.
First episode final title card appears, and I'm like, hmmm there was a little blood, no big deal. What's with all the gruesome statements.... Then the after credits part hit. Ok yep. Lol I watched the first 3, I like it enough to stick with it. |
Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
Holy fuck that was intense and awesome. Is this rated TV-MA? That end was unexpected and fucking brutal. Loved it.
|
Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
I'm so glad the trailer didn't spoil anything like many of us (who read the comics) kinda feared.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
Holy bleeping bleep.
That ep 1 epilogue was unbelievable. |
Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
I sort of had a suspicion something was going to happen. Hot damn that was crazy.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
Episode 1 was nicely executed with that punch to the gut. I think in a pre-streaming era you probably hold that scene back for a couple episodes, but Amazon has to hook viewers off the bat.

Did read that in the comics, that scene/story is much further along in the story/issues.
Because of this, they had to alter the storyline a bit to bide time and give Invincible time to grow with his supporting cast without his whole world crumbling down first. |
Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
It definitely worked! I was hooked.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
Finished episode four, No spoilers
Invincible is good. I know very little about comic books, but this reminds me of the watchmen comic. It always moves forward and doesn't worry if you are keeping up. Very creative, great origin story, great twists. Curious to see where it goes. Loving it so far |
Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
Holy crap, the end of episode one was nuts! I kinda have to keep watching now.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
This show is fucking badass! It’s like funny, shocking, a mystery, so much in an animated superhero series. It’s amazing. Engaging. Great voice acting. Fucking JK, Walton Goggins, Steven Yuen. Every fucking ep (through 3) has been unbelievable in story and craft. So intrigued. Just great. Comes head to head with any animated or even live-action superhero tv series. Kinda animated The Boys, which of course, is great. Just fucking addicting. Like Spider-Man coming of age, and then a ton more...

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
Does Kirkman EP and have a lot of say on what’s written? Bc if this series is only half as good as the graphic novel, I’ll get it in a heartbeat. I have and read Watchmen. Movie kinda sucked, but the novel sure didn’t. Loved The Dark Knight Returns, that’s Miller right? And of course his Sin City was a masterpiece on paper. Film too, but more so paper. Read the OldBoy graphic novel that came with some dvd or Blu set I got many moons ago.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
I highly doubt this series will last long enough to get into the craziness of the complete Invincible run, but if you like the show I highly recommend the comic (granted I have only seen a couple of episodes of the show).
However, if you like the Boys, I do not recommend the comic it's based on unless you read up on it first. |
Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
^ huh? I did like The Boys and am loving this series.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
I absolutely loved the comic (I think I got up to issue 84 before dropping off for time/monetary reasons), but the characters seem so much more unlikable than in the comics. I also hope that they get to the "twist" soon (I watched episodes 2 and 3), but it seems like season 1 will just cover the first trade, which is a really slow pace.

Re: Invincible (Amazon): animated series based on the comic by Robert Kirkman
Episode 5 was pretty brutal.

When you say "the twist" you mean why what happened in episode 1 happened, or something else I've forgotten?
Spoiler:
I actually forget how exactly the first arc's Omni-Man stuff plays out in sequence, because it's just setting for the entire rest of the series. I also forgot Bulletproof doesn't join the Guardians of the Globe on their first recruitment and thought they cut the character. I love that guy, but I could understand not wanting a black man named "Bulletproof". |
