Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
Sounds like a rumor, so I will wait for official confirmation before I freak out haha.
Only Orville news I have is that Jon Cassar (Director) confirmed that most of the season 3 episodes will be close to an hour long (as opposed to ~45 minutes, which former episodes were due to commercial breaks). |
Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
I've seen it as a you.tube posting, -today, in fact, -but it's not a reliable site.

Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
I really hope not but was really worried about it because it seemed like such a fringe show and it seems like every show has to be a massive hit to justify itself these days.
I will always love Orville for giving us this moment. |
Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
Until Seth McFarlane or another producer confirms it, The Orville is not cancelled.

Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
I saw that report maybe 2 weeks ago also. Something about they knew it would end after S3 when it moved to Hulu. Now I don't recall what site the article was posted to.

Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
I can only find one mention on twitter, by The Cinema Spot. No clue as to how reliable they are.
If this is true, it just deepens my hatred of streaming services getting their hands on awesome shows and then dropping them after 3 seasons. How do they expect to get a backlog of binge-able shows like Star Trek, Friends, Seinfeld, etc, if they don't invest in them? |

@TomCostantino: @pedrostarfleet Thank my friend @MollyShock for the reference. Crawling under my rock again dear friends! https://t.co/XAPiyWHKZe |

It’s sad what’s become of Star Trek. It’s fallen victim to producers who want to make it more dumbed down to appeal to a wider audience who never gave a crap about the franchise
I have seldom witness people even talk about the newer Trek shows except to say how bad they how. I mean, the new shows are exclusive to a streaming service whose main perk is Trek-related media. Look at how little original content it has so far that isn't Trek. I think you almost have to a Trekkie to want to subscribe. Am I wrong? |
Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
Disco and Picard both had some great ideas and great moments, but were too interested in navel gazing to be really great overall.
The Orville has the advantage of being able to lift the TNG structure, and just get right into storytelling. It's what we wanted from Trek for so many years, just do more TNG style episodes. |

It’s something that has a fanbase for sure, but at the same time has long been looked at as the geekiest of the genre if you ask me. There aren’t many casual Trek fans. Maybe some who have seen a handful of the episodes and some of the movies. Generally though I find people love it or are indifferent to it. |

CBS I’m sure wants that casual fan though. They want to sell these new shows as more accessible to an audience who doesn’t care. I think they’ve been banking on the diehard Trek fans to flock to whatever they put out. Sadly some still do. There has been more of a divide though. Much like what happened with Star Wars and the Sequel Trilogy.

While I was caught a bit off guard at first, I came to appreciate the fact that The Orville took its sci-fi elements so seriously. MacFarlane could have easily just done something like Family Guy in space, but he chose to actually try and give us some stories with depth and add humor to lighten the mood, not be the whole show.

Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
I'm no Trekkie, I don't care about canon or what others believe a Trek show should be like. If I evaluate Discovery and the Orville on their own merits, Discovery started meh but managed to consistently improve while The Orville went the other direction and spun it's wheels. I won't miss it.

Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
I thought Season 2 was a significant improvement over Season 1 for the Orville. And Season 1 was really good.
If we only get 3 seasons I'll be OK with that. Not happy, of course, but OK. It was borderline on getting a 2nd season, let alone a 3rd, so if they get through 3 I'll be happy. I love the show. |
Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
Every time this thread moves up on the page and I see the words: "and why it has a place on TV" I think, "Hey Orville, there's a place for you on TV! Put some new episodes in there!"

Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
The worst thing about The Orville now is that it will no longer be on free TV. There doesn't seem to be an HD disc option and it looks like it will be at least $20 a season on Amazon. Does anyone know how many episodes will be in the new season?

Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
Did they even shoot any of season 3? I went through Jon Cassar's Twitter feed and there's nothing going back to March.
I'm afraid you won't see a 3rd season until late 2021 at the earliest. |
Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
I think they'd shot most of the season when they got shut down.
|
Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
They are editing now, though I'm not sure how many episodes have filming completed.
I tweeted Jon Cassar a few weeks ago and got a response: https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...d19277846b.jpg |
Re: Why The Orville is so great, and why it has a place on TV.
I always found myself looking forward to each episode and enjoying them every time.
Can’t say that about any new Trek. |
