Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
Marketing a brand new storyline with new characters is a hell of lot easier to get fans to like if the product is good/great. Unfortunately this just continues to look like a CW show - everything from top to bottom screams mediocre. And without getting into it further, that is the ideology of Lucasfilm right now. (and sadly many other companies)

Lucasfilm: We got you. Here is The Acolyte! Star Wars Fans: Not that Damned if you do. Damned if you don't. Unfortunately I think for the universe to move on this show needs to succeed to prove that content out of that 60 year Skywalker era is marketable and Star Wars fans are too fickle to see that. Then we'll be back to cramming even more backstory into the overcrowded era with even more shows and movies. |
Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
Every major IP has shitty fans. If the Acolyte interests, then just watch it. Don't let those people influence you.
I went to see the re-release of The Phantom Menace today and after the credits finished, they showed a 5 minute extended fight scene from the show. It looked and sounded really good on the big screen. And then they showed the trailer. |
Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
I think it looks interesting. Not exactly the same thing but inspired by Knights of the Old Republic.

I have not followed the development of this series too much, but one thing I have not gotten from the marketing so far (both trailers and poster) - who is the main character supposed to be? Besides the "jedi are being hunted" pitch, what's the actual story hook I'm supposed to care about?

Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
^^ From what I've read, there are two sisters who are separated at a young age after their village is raided / destroyed. One is light, one is dark but I don't believe either knows they're capable of being Jedi or one does and the other doesn't. From the videos, I've not ascertained who the sisters are... so, that synopsis could be total crap.
Edit: Carrie Ann Moss looks awesome. She's in full Matrix mode and looks to have completely de-aged herself. Amazing. |

So, rounds out to two episodes per year to make this?

Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
I saw Moss on Good Morning America the other day. They mentioned the showrunner described her character as Trinity with a lightsaber. Moss replied: "I'm glad she didn't say that to me, because maybe I wouldn't have done it." I wouldn't have blamed her. I also wish they'd stop trying to emulate Vader's look by including yet another black helmeted Sith villain. What was part of Anakin's life support system has been turned into a fashion trend for a series of generic villains by the hacks coming up with this stuff.
I see Kennedy and the Lucasfilm PR machine are once again doing their preemptive move against any negative backlash by calling some fans racist, sexist bigots. Regardless, it's tiring to see them still feeding into it for press and using it as a shield against criticism. Especially at this point, when the writing on past Star Wars shows has been so terrible. They took the same approach with the Kenobi series, a show I hated - but it had nothing to do with Reva being played by a black woman. It had a lot to do with what a poorly developed character she was and that the actress delivered a stilted performance. She was hardly alone on that front: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...4e7926321.jpeg |
Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
There are racist fans out there, though. They do exist unfortunately and the worst thing is they poison the whole conversation so that any regular criticism can't be discussed without it turning bad.
Like Rose Tico in the sequels. I have nothing against Asian women in Star Wars, but her character was even more poorly written than Jar Jar Binks and you can't bring that up without getting called a racist. |
Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
That's why they're doing a diservice to some minority actors. Scold racist fans for the poor reception to a character, then (in the case of Finn) give them almost nothing of substance to do in the next movie or (in the case of Rose) barely include them at all. That kind of hypocriscy is such a turn-off.
In interviews, Leslye Headland comes off as a stereotype of an obnoxious progressive girlboss - almost as if she was handpicked to raise the ire of a certain part of the fanbase. Still, I hope she came up with an entertaining story containing meaningful themes and well-rounded characters you can root for - regardless of their nationality. That's mostly all I've ever wanted out of Star Wars, but it happens so rarely. Considering Headland's elevator pitch for The Acolyte was "Frozen meets Kill Bill", my hopes aren't exactly high. Some of the press junket interviews for this show are frustrating for anyone with even a passing knowledge of Star Wars to watch. I'll single out Charlie Barnett, who plays a new Jedi character with Killmonger hair. He has repeatedly stated that there is no good or evil in the franchise. He then tried to back this up by questioning how Luke (who he repeatedly called Anakin) blowing up the Death Star and killing so many Imperials was less horrific than anything Vader did. Y'know, like slaughtering a group of innocent five-year-olds and choking out your pregnant wife using the Force were morally ambigous actions. The clueless actor was completely overlooking the fact that the Death Star had just blown up Alderaan and wiped out millions, with countless more casualties to come. What else could Luke have done - stage a peaceful protest as the rebel base was being fired upon? Talk about losing track of the stakes in the plot. Of course, the Disney shills conducting these interviews didn't dare attempt to set him straight. They just smiled and agreed. |
Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
Andor was perfectly diverse and to my knowledge got almost no blowback at all - for two primary reasons 1) quality was excellent 2) the most important aspect was the story first. That's the thing, they could just do those things and keep being diverse - but they insist on telling us in these interviews that diversity is the priority, and so the quality and story suffers.

Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
I would've liked to have gotten in to the Andor series more, but I found it too dry and depressing. Took me a few months to finish. I know there are morally grey aspects to explore in this universe, but the show was so far removed from the escapist fare aimed at ten-year-olds that got the franchise off the ground. War is hell, but it was also hard to be uplifted already knowing the title character's fate.
One thing I do miss is the sweeping romance that was a big part of the franchise pre-Disney. Yeah, the Anakin and Padmé stuff was clumsily written and poorly acted, but it's like Kennedy has a complete aversion to any new Star Wars characters falling in love. The hints of it we have gotten are extremely off-putting: Rey having a conflicted attraction to a murderous tyrant or Rose smooching Finn when his reaction indicated her feelings were not mutual. None of this has been satisfying... apart from the satisfaction Andor got enjoying his vacay at a brothel. That was just the scene fans had been clamoring for. |
Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
I couldn't finish Andor.

Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
Andor is BY FAR, the best Star Wars anywhere since ... The OG trilogy?
I like it better than prequels. I like it better than 7-9. I like it better than Rogue One or Solo (and I love Solo!) So ya, best Star Wars since the OG. (Mando Season 2 was great too) |
Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
Andor was a slow burn, but it is some of the best Star Wars material that’s been created.
Set design was excellent - true to 1977 SW set design. The Eye episode was phenomenal. |
Re: Star Wars: The Acolyte (Disney+) -- news, rumors, etc.
I loved that there were no Jedi, no lightsabers, none of that. It was a way more realistic Star Wars, since .... Star Wars. And you are 100%, the set design, & costumes were killer, and B2EMO is one of my top favorite droids.

So ya, best Star Wars since the OG. (Mando Season 2 was great too) I will say that the hook of the Mandalorian works (the lone wolf and cub) and the show is not trying to be anything more than it is, so that's fine. Wouldn't mind if they tried to elevate it a bit, but on a Saturday morning cartoon level it works. |
