Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/ZT...gHVJGtAyak.jpg
Synopsis: Picard begins investigating the mystery of Dahj as well as what her very existence means to the Federation. Without Starfleet's support, Picard is left leaning on others for help, including Dr. Agnes Jurati and an estranged former colleague, Raffi Musiker. |
Re: Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
We're still in the set-up phase of the season and it's clear that Picard burned a LOT of bridges. I did like the nod to "All Good Things" with the doctor's visit. I do wonder why Picard is going to let the doctor run a bunch of tests when he already knows what's wrong. (I don't think I need to spoilerize that sentence since it's more about a TNG episode than this episode of Picard but I'll change it if necessary).
Two, I really hope the writers explain what the Romulans did post-Nemesis to piss everyone in the Federation off. |

Loved the sign in the Borg Cube. "This facility has gone _____ days without an assimilation". rotfl
A bit slow but looks like next week finally kicks it into high gear. |

Not a great episode and was annoyed by it for the most part.

Made me long for episodic TV again. If this is a ten-hour movie, hour two is all setup and a total snooze.

Though I am impatient to see the Riker/Troi family. |

I enjoyed the episode. Yes it was a bit slower, but I didn’t mind the backstory. I did like the “__ days without an assimilation” sign in The Artifact . Still not entirely clear what the Romulans are doing with The Artifact at this point. Seems like on Earth they’re infiltrating Starfleet for some type of revenge I imagine. My only guess is still that the Romulans are wanting to use Soji to make their own synthetics with the intent of using them for attack.

Re: Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
That woman dropped the F-bomb on Picard, so we hate her instantly.
I thought this would be the episode with Riker & Troi and the previews for next week don't show them either...is it possible that scene is a set-up for Season 2? Those who thought Picard wasn't dying at the end of this series...still feel that way? :) I love the scenes with Stewart, but still have no clue what is going on in that Borg Cube. I lose interest every time Picard is off-screen. |
Re: Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
Riveted from start to finish. I love this look at the TNG future - something I never thought I’d see. And I don’t want every answer by episode two
Can’t wait to see where this is going. |
Re: Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
We can assume the Romulans suffered a major population loss after the disaster, so maybe they're using the Borg tech to extend their lifespans? Maybe looking for ways to fix any genetic problems that arise from breeding with a limited gene pool?

Re: Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
I look forward next week’s episode to see Picard getting control of a ship and back into space (presumably). Seems like it should be where things will really pick up.
I like the main theme from the show. I find it stuck in my head a lot. Soft and simple but it works for the show. |

No one is being that dramatic about it, but yes continue on with the fanboys can’t accept new Star Trek narrative.

Re: Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
Haven't the Federation and the Romulans always been enemies through all of TOS and TNG? I don't remember them being on good terms but I may have forgotten. Wasn't the bad guy in Nemesis a Romulan (well, technically he was a Picard clone)?
|
Re: Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
Yes the Federation and the Romulans have always been Cold War enemies. They established a sort of truce for the Dominion War and after the events of Nemesis but clearly something went sideways to where 14 worlds threaten to leave The Federation if they lift a finger to save Romulans.

Re: Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
In TOS, the 1960s analogy was generally that Klingons = Soviet Union and Romulans = China.
In the TNG era, the Romulan status quo was mostly maintained, where they were still an isolationist empire, though in the time between TOS and TNG, there seemed to be a hot war between the Romulans and Klingons. On DS9 the Federation and Romulans (and Klingons) took the same side during the Dominion War, but it took some "encouragement" to get the Romulans involved. |
Re: Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
I consider myself a solid to casual fan, but signed up for the service for this show to revisit one of the great Characters in this series, this show is a gift to get a chance to watch Stewart take the reigns again, this has been a real treat.

Re: Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
During a late-90s ebay binge I collected about 25 different Picard dolls / action figures, they're standing on the top of one of my bookshelves. I complained about this episode, but I'm riveted too and believe this show is a gift. I'm not missing a Thursday unless I'm dead or something.
Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot I have a fullsize Picard standup too. He's in season 02 show garb, don't know what release or event it was tied into... Like I said elsewhere I've got sky-high hopes for this show, so I"m trying to manage my expectations. |

In the TNG era, the Romulan status quo was mostly maintained, where they were still an isolationist empire, though in the time between TOS and TNG, there seemed to be a hot war between the Romulans and Klingons. . The premise of The Undiscovered Country was that the Klingon Empire was "dying" after the explosion of Praxis, and Starfleet made the decision (urged by Spock) to pursue peace with the Klingons rather than pursue a course of action that would seal the Federation's enemies' doom. Then following the 1960s analogy, the Klingons and the Romulans (both "communist states") entered into a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" alliance against the Federation. This resulted in a three-way cold war for 50 years until the Romulans turned on the Klingons. And Picard well knows that the Enterprise-C was destroyed protecting Klingons from a Romulan attack, leading directly to the formal alliance between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Also Picard had intimate knowledge of Ambassador Spock's belief that peace could be achieved between the Federation and the Romulan Empire. So while the line, "Not Romulan lives . . . LIVES" is dramatic, and crystalizes Picard's ethics and understanding of Federation ideals, it also is in line with previous strategic thinking from Starfleet. Also, in the Kelvin timeline, it was Kirk who pointed out to Spock the logic of extending mercy to the Romulans, if Nero was willing to ask them for help. |

I forget the name of the Picard action figure, but there was one that went for crazy money that all the scalpers were looking for.

Re: Star Trek: Picard - Maps and Legends (S1E2) - 1/30/20
So a couple of things I picked up from this episode:
Picard has some kind of brain disease that will likely kill him. But otherwise, he's healthy for his age and he's now operating an unsanctioned freelance mission since that Federation Admiral basically told him to fuck off Nice to see some other familiar actors like Tamlyn Tomita, David Paymer and Peyton List. The set up for this season is fine so far. Yes, I can see that Picard although respected has burned a lot of bridges at Starfleet. |
