The Drew Barrymore Show --- Daytime Talk Show

She has not done a lot of movies lately but has the happy energetic people person aura to host a talk show.

Is it a decision by her or Hollywood does not to cast her in movies anymore?

She was not a great actress but had a nice presence on screen.

Drew Barrymore is joining daytime TV.

Beginning next fall, the actress, producer and entrepreneur will host her own syndicated daytime talk show from CBS Television Distribution.

"It is beyond my wildest dreams to have this opportunity for a daily talk show," Barrymore said in a release. "I'm truly thrilled and honored to be creating this show with CBS."
Barrymore, whose acting career has spanned four decades, jumps into daytime on the heels of the conclusion of her Netflix series, "Santa Clarita Diet," on which she also served as an executive producer. With her new venture, Barrymore joins singer Kelly Clarkson as another contemporary performer with name recognition aiming to inject star power into daytime. For Clarkson, the experiment worked in its debut week back in September, with "The Kelly Clarkson Show" earning the highest-rated debut of any syndicated show in seven years. Ratings have declined moderately since, according to Broadcast & Cable.

She used to be a good talk show guest, but it's much easier turning "it" on for fifteen minutes than five days a week.

I wonder how it will play out since maybe hearing her talk that much could be irritating.

If all else fails, she can always get up on her desk and lift her shirt again.

Maybe now is the chance to take over daytime if people turn off Ellen.

Never seen it, but I did catch the clip of David Letterman showing up on the episode when it was her birthday. I miss Dave.

Has she had any in-person guests yet?

These zoom call interviews are rough even on the most seasoned hosts.

I've seen a few of her shows.

The "in studio" guests are done via green screen. I saw Shannon Lee appear on the show and it looked it she was sitting next to Drew, but she was actually in a studio in front of a green screen in Los Angeles, while Drew is in New York. Lee was digitally inserted into Drew's studio.

Bruce Lee would've been 80. Wow! Bet he would have still been kicking ass.

She has has that rare happy bubbly personality which is perfect for a talk show.

Some other shows got second seasons like the Queen Latifah and Bonnie Hunt shows and they did not last so hope Drew keeps her show or she could return to movies.

I have never seen an episode but saw when Tom Green was on, real awkward. It looked like he was really there but maybe they were just using technology.

I've watched a few of her episodes... and I think they're more for her than anyone else. I think it's very cathartic for her especially when it came to having guests that have had something to do with her life. Spielberg, Letterman, Tom Green, Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz.

re: The Drew Barrymore Show --- Daytime Talk Show

I am glad it is coming but now being produced into two 30 minute shows?

CBS Media Ventures handed The Drew Barrymore Show its renewal and is now changing up the program’s formatting. The show, which currently airs in an hour-long format, will now be produced as two-half hour episodes. According to THR, said installments could be aired back-to-back or could even run during completely different periods of time. It’s an interesting creative change and, in a statement to the trade, CBS Media Ventures president Steve LoCascio explained that it was necessary for the company’s continued collaboration with its TV affiliate partners:it will have a new format that will allow CBS Stations to launch new morning newscasts.

The show will be produced and distributed as two half-hour episodes that can be aired separately or as a full-hour block.

CBS Stations will take advantage of the new format by starting local morning newscasts that will air from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The newscasts will lead into the first half hour of The Drew Barrymore Show.

From a programming perspective that’s actually really smart. It can now be sold to affiliates to plug either half-hour or full hour blocks in their schedules. So like if a small market has a 11-11:30 newscast, this can plug the hole that follows to get them to noon. If it was still an hourlong show that wouldn’t be an option.

Smart.

But what does it say about the show's overall popularity in the marketplace?

Oh, local affiliate, you can't carve out an hour for this national talk show? We'll make a 30 minute version for you.

If the show was a ratings hit, the affiliates would take the hour and like it.

And now she could have made a bigger splash with the 1 hr show since Ellen, Maury, Wendy Williams, and Nick Cannon are all gone and Kelly Clarkson and Tamron Hall might be her only true competitors in the daytime talk format.

The Wendy Williams show has become the Sherri Shepherd show. Jennifer Hudson also has a new hour long daytime talk show.

Depends on the economics and the market. There are shows that are national hits that come in dead last of the four major networks here. Many stations are adding more local programming because it’s cheaper and more popular in some cases than the syndicated stuff. I can also see a scenario where stations who wanted the hourlong show already have it but this 30-minute version could make it out to more stations that don’t have a full hour free.

There are other things that can happen too. The show I work on is produced like a 1 1/2 hour show but it’s actually two separate shows - one is an hour and the other is a 1/2 hour. Only the hourlong show replays overnight. So maybe there is some replay thing at play too.

Bottom line is that making it a more flexible product will get it out to more stations. Contracts can’t always accommodate a full hour, even if the show is popular.

I stand by my statement that if the show were popular enough, then the stations would want to run the full hour. It appears to me that Drew @ 9am on CBS is getting beaten by Today on NBC and Kelly & Ryan on ABC, so they want to dump an expensive half hour to repeat (ad nauseum) some local news.

I like Drew but never watched her show. It's on in the afternoon and I'm usually doing something else. I should check it out. I wonder if they'll format the show to anticipate stations just running the first half hour. At the halfway point no announcements of "coming up Richard Simmons gives away all his money to one lucky viewer."

I'm sure they will. They'll just tease the first half, then re-open the show and do the second half. Just some scripting tweaks.

Re: The Drew Barrymore Show --- Daytime Talk Show

The big question is why NBC did not find a new host to fill the spot open when Kelly Clarkson took over Ellen?
