Re: Watchmen (HBO) -- Season 1 Thread -- Premieres 10/20/19
But in a broader context, there's been a trend for a lot of programming to be shot really, really dark. The "Battle of Winterfell" episode of Game of Thrones is an example of that.
And I mentioned Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, where almost every goddamned indoor shot is so dark that the blacks are crushed and there's not shadow detail. There's a close-up of someone wearing dark clothes in a dark room, and all you can see is a shadowy face against a diffuse, murky background.
And there's a lot of other random stuff, too, where there will be a dark scene where you can't tell what the fuck is going on, regardless of the race of the actors involved.

That never occurred to me until several months ago when my mom was showing me her high school yearbook. You couldn't even make out the faces of the black kids in her class, because as you say, everything was lit for taking pictures of white kids. I felt really bad for the families who couldn't even have a nice photographic record of their kids in school. So yeah, this is really nice to see in the show.

It's raining squid. You have to wonder what Veidt is up to.
Thought it was interesting- it played sort of like a western. I liked it.
One criticism towards HBO- they really need to do something about their filming of dark/night scenes. The amount of banding/compression artifacts in this was atrocious, just as bad as it was in the White Walker episode of GoT last season. They need to get their shit together, and I'm not sure what the issue is. If HBO Max ultimately offers 4k/HDR maybe things will improve. No other network I know of has problems like this with their streaming content, at least not to this extent.

I liked it.
And yes, the lighting/cinematography was good. (I could only watch Sabrina on one TV in my house because that was the only room dark enough to see a darn thing.)
I'm a little confused, and definitely disappointed in the very ending (as in, I didn't want that to happen, but I knew it was going to.)
But very intrigued and looking forward to the rest, especially after the 'this season on Watchmen' at the end.
Only thing I'm trying to connect in my head is

You could like it, or not, but this was in no way "awful".

Okay I will bite : What does 'Lindeloff strikes again' mean? This show was nothing like either LOST or The Leftovers besides I suppose introducing you to a world where there is a lot not explained to you up front They are all very different shows besides that.

Relax. This isn't a forum from the early 2000's. Nobody is trying to bait you with a comment. For me, Damon's work is hit (Lost / The Leftovers) and miss (Prometheus / Tomorrowland). That's all. My OPINION is that this is already a miss. It's not for me. And that's ok. I'm glad other people like it.

Also, this in-depth, post-episode interview with Lindelof fills in a lot of holes people may have questions about...

Really enjoyed Ep.1.
Although I did watch that crap of a movie from 10 years ago, I am unfamiliar with the Watchmen.
There is a lot here for HBO to mine; its alternative universe offering excellent storylines to exploit in the future.
I did hate to see
Looking forward to Ep. 2.

I haven’t watched yet. It the movie or the graphic novel considered canon to this? I’m wondering if a rewatch/reread is necessary before delving into it.

It's 30 some years after the GN. Doesn't seem like it will follow any of the film. Though I have heard some says certain artistic aspects seem to be from the style of the film.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes. Was on the fence about it, but this first episode pulled me in. I’m on board. And that HBO website detailing the in-universe stuff about the events since 1985 is great.
