Stumptown

I didn't see anything on this so I thought I'd give it a go. This is basically Reef Break in the gritty city w/out the bikinis and scenery. Could be interesting but I'm guessing it's in for an early cancellation.

Re: Stumptown

The first episode was OK. I like most of the cast so I'll give it some rope.

Re: Stumptown

One hand I generally try all shows based on graphic novels. On the other I try to avoid all crime procedurals, It's a dilemma.

Made it through the premiere but there's nothing there to keep me watching.

Re: Stumptown

We just watched this too. I thought it was pretty good and will check out some more. It certainly wasn’t the most enthralling pilot, but I’m curious to see where it goes.

wife thinks it’s in for early cancellation though.

curious about the Reef Break comment, as I recorded that but we didn’t watch any.

Re: Stumptown

This looks almost like a dark gritty version of Magnum PI without any bright colors, and filmed in a crappy part of town.

Re: Stumptown

It was just okay. It seemed a lot like of other Action/Comedy shows. I'll probably watch it if there's nothing else on.

Re: Stumptown

The second episode had a moment that REALLY irritated me regarding the premise and execution of the series.

One of the premises of the series is seemingly going to be that Dex is always in dire financial straits.

Spoiler:
Her client stiffs her on the $1000 fee for finding the girl, then she ends up saving his life. In the end he pays her the $1000. WTF!?!?!?

He had $50000 in cash on him! Why didn't Dex demand (re: take) more of his money?

How about making Dex behave like an actual person, who is not going to run around getting the shit kicked out of her for free. How about making Dex behave like an actual person, who is aware of their financial problems and seizes opportunities to fix them?

She probably gets something from her military service. They could always write in that she gets retirement, or some sort of medical check to cover basics. Plus, maybe their parents left them the house?

I do agree with the getting beat up sentiment. Maybe she thinks she’s tougher than she is due to military service.

I liked the development with the acquaintance of the bar owner. Seems like that will turn into a running plot line.

I also like how Dec is going to move forward with getting her PI license. Better than just randomly running around town without any consequences.

Pilot established that she had gambled away her recent military check, but as long as she drives around in that POS car it means she needs $$.

Third episode with her and the veteran PI was a lot of fun. Love to 70s crime show opening.

I really enjoyed that storyline and it's fun seeing Donal Logue on TV again.

Re: Stumptown

I totally love seeing Donal Logue in pretty much anything, but it’s not enough to watch this. I bailed after the first 2 episodes. Makes me want to watch his parts in Vikings again.

Re: Stumptown

I would have rather kept Donal Logue as an occasional guest star/partner rather then giving him the heel turn.

Re: Stumptown

Yet another episode where Dex doesn't take the money. Of course, the previews pushed the Thanksgiving scene which was the last five minutes of the show.

Sorry, Dex. You already did the damage. Refusing the money doesn't make anything better, it just makes you broker.

Re: Stumptown

Apparently a lot of people have dropped off from the show and I'm just about there. This reminds me a bit of "Burn Notice", in that each week there's a barely-there "case of the week", but all the show has is really interested in is the characters and their side-stories. That in itself isn't the problem, -these are good actors doing good work, -but the "cases" need to be something more than filler. And then there's "Dex", -the series protagonist, -who's portrayed as an ineffectual sad sack and is becoming kind of tiresome to watch. And, yeah, she turned down the money again in another episode, and had to be forced to take her fee.

Yeah, the cases have been weak. The overall car ring story has been pretty good. And, like you said, the actors are all doing well which is what keeps it watchable.

I have no background with the comic source material so I can't comment on how close/different TV Dex is to the original character.

Re: Stumptown

Not much interest in this show here, but I watched the full season and enjoyed it. I think with many broadcast network shows, they can't compete in complexity with cable/streaming, but a lot of the enjoyment just comes from how much you want to spend some time with the stars. Plus, I'm old enough to like the Rockford vibe.

ABC has pulled the second season renewal due to the `rona, and now the show is cancelled. RIP Stumptown
