Emergence (ABC)

Didn't see a thread on this, wasn't too bad, has a bit of a Lost feel and some Lost folks in it as well... I do like Allison Tolman, so will tune in again, not sure if I will stick around, but I will give it a few eps...

https://abc.go.com/shows/emergence

After Jo, a police chief, takes in a young child she finds near the site of a mysterious accident, she soon discovers the girl has no memory of what has happened or who she is. The investigation into the history that led up to the accident -- and questions as to how and why it happened -- draws the woman into a conspiracy larger than she ever imagined, with the child's identity at the center of it.

Typical ABC-style mystery format the network has been attempting to pull off the past decade. They keep trotting this formula out each and every new TV season. I watched the first 20 minutes and gave up.

I have the same thought. The format felt like things I've seen before and I can feel the episode padding already. Concepts like this work better (to me) when shorter runs overall. Network TV likely wants to drag it out for seasons if they could. I may be curious enough to read about what happens or when it gets cancelled on a cliffhanger.

I'm dodging this for the same reasons myself, but the producers have said they'll answer most of the questions of the situation fairly quickly because they're aware of this reluctance from viewers.

I liked it for Allison, so I'll give it another go for now, even though she's kind of playing the same character from Fargo.. and it's set on Long Island so will keep an eye out for anything that looks familiar even though its not likely filmed here.

ABC could have just titled this show Weirder Items
Last night's episode seemed very familiar and I just don't think I'm going to hang with this one. Too bad because I like Clancy Brown and Allison Tolman.

I absolutely love the family dynamic in this, plus the actors are great. Donald Faison is fun as the estranged dad, and the kids definitely hold their own against Allison, Clancy and the others. Watching the third episode now.

Oh, Hai, there’s Locke from LOST,

Really digging this show. Finally a show in this genre that seems to have learned to have an overall narrative and to not hold off on reveals.

That said this show is really well written with great dialogue and the cast is exceedingly likeable and engaging. In for long haul. Apparently word of mouth is really strong and gained a ton of viewers in week 2.

Liked Episode 3 a lot, I think people will stick with it.

I've been catching up on this off my DVR. I am enjoying it so far, but like others said I am a bit wary of shows like this since so many have tried and failed over the years. We'll see how this does...

At least they understand this now. When I first saw it I was sure they would take an entire season and a cliffhanger to tell us anything.

Interesting development at the end of this week's episode. I'm still enjoying this, but it looks like it's not doing well in the ratings at all.

It did a little better with "The Little Mermaid" as a lead-in.

Emergence S2

I really liked S1. A little predictable, with some twists. The end was unexpected a little. Watched S2E1 and I'm not sure where they're going. The LI sheriff can't chase them all over the country can she? The FBI guy has already been pulled, or will this put him back on the case. If you haven't seen this maybe check it out.

Re: Emergence (ABC)

What the hell are you talking about? Season 2?

You're talking about the ABC show right? It's still on season 1. It's a 13 episode season.

Re: Emergence (ABC)

Putting aside Barely’s confusion that the latest episode is still from Season 1 not Season 2 I agree that more people should check this show out. It is arguably my favorite show on TV right now certainly in my top 3, great cast (from the main characters all the way down to the Sheriff’s daughter) and they are moving the story along at a good pace.

Yeah, the mid-season finale and this week's episodes were quite a swerve. How many "blue skins" are out there and where did they come from?
Aliens?

I like to think of them as cyber people, with a twist on what we would normally think of as a cyborg. I find it interesting that the show is playing around with the idea of what might happen if something like a super advanced AI was basically dropped into say a blank slate (a clone for example) of a person. Would this person then become (be considered) more machine than man due to their ability to function coming les from their own throughts than those of the AI (or would we be looking at the AI acting in concert with the neurons firing in the human brain, and not simply over-riding the human brain?). Anyway, I feel this is an under-rated show and hope it gets renewed.

Re: Emergence (ABC)

Watched the season (series?) finale tonight. Some things wrapped up, but obviously a lot was left open-ended in case there is a season 2, which is probably not likely.

I started losing interest in this over the last few episodes. I think the writing was pretty bad, with characters making a lot of stupid decisions. And it felt like there was a lot of back-and-forth maneuvering between the good guys and bad guys that was just filler. And the acting is not great.

I don't really buy the hunky FBI guy falling for the chubby police chief. I realize that tv shows have often had schlubby guys with hot wives so this is just flipping the script on that, but, still... it feels like a very unrealistic pairing and just takes me out of the story.

I thought the last couple episodes were a little awkward but I really enjoyed the season over all. I liked how they sort of reveal to reveal without dragging things out. And I do like the sort of "Contact with a twist" element they are hinting at. It's live ratings are not awesome but its total viewership is actually really high. Not a lock to be cancelled
