Reacher (Amazon) - based on the Lee Child novels - S: Alan Ritchson - premieres 2/4/22

Jack Reacher may be headed to television. Lee Child, whose Jack Reacher book series was turned into a pair of Paramount movies starring Tom Cruise, said today that there is a deal in place to turn the novels into a TV series. According to Child, there will be no more movies with Cruise and he also won’t star in the potential TV series.

The movies, 2012’s Jack Reacher and 2016’s Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, were produced by Skydance and Cruise/Wagner and distributed by Paramount. We hear that the potential series would be co-produced by Skydance Television and Paramount Television, with Skydance taking lead. According to Child, it would be toplined by a new actor more befitting the imposing, burly character he created in his books. Sources said the project is still in nascent stages, with the producers still figuring out what the next chapter in the franchise should be.

Skydance TV and Paramount TV recently teamed up to successfully reboot as a TV series with a new actor another famous book series that already had been made into action movies, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan for Amazon.

Child, who has written 23 Reacher novels (and a short story collection), praised Cruise’s acting chops in an interview with BBC Radio Manchester, but that “Cruise, for all his talent, didn’t have that physicality,” noting that the the actor’s size threw off his some of his core readers who saw the films.

“I really enjoyed working with Cruise. He’s a really, really nice guy. We had a lot of fun,” Child said. “But ultimately the readers are right. The size of Reacher is really, really important and it’s a big component of who he is… So what I’ve decided to do is – there won’t be any more movies with Tom Cruise. Instead we’re going to take it to Netflix or something like that. Long-form streaming television, with a completely new actor.”

He added: “We’re rebooting and starting over and we’re going to try and find the perfect guy.”

We hear that it has not been determined yet where the potential series would be pitched, with streaming, broadcast and cable all considered possibilities.

Christopher McQuarrie directed the first film in the Jack Reacher franchise, which grossed $218.3 million worldwide. Its sequel, directed by Edward Zwick, fared less well, grossing $162.1 million globally.

Re: Jack Reacher TV series in the works

Here's to hoping they get an actor who has the physique of Reacher from the books. Cruise is definitely not that. This could be a good series if done right.

If only Paramount had a network in the US that was willing to air sophisticated grown up fare like Jack Ryan or even Jack Reacher... if only.

Man imagine the possibilities and the ratings.

Don't know if you're serious

They're airing essentially an R rated show in Yellowstone.

IMO, Steven McQueen from The Vampire Diaries and Chicago Fire might be a good young Reacher. He's 30, physically fit and can act. He fits the younger age profile for Reacher. And yes, for those who don't know, he's related to that McQueen.

I'm still pulling for Kevin Durand. He's getting a little up there (mid-40s) to play active duty Reacher, but he certainly has the physicality and could certainly pull off drifter Reacher quite well.

What about John Cena?

I'm a little surprised reading Child's comments about Cruise. The movies did decent, not great. I suspect Cruise also didn't have a strong interest in taking the series any further. Clearly not as successful of a franchise for him when compared to M:I.

Jack Reacher TV series in development by Amazon

https://deadline.com/2019/07/amazon-...ra-1202646465/

In a competitive situation, Amazon has landed the rights to develop a script-to-series drama based on the Jack Reacher character from Lee Child’s bestselling book series, from Scorpion creator Nick Santora. The project will be a co-production of Amazon Studios, Skydance Television and Paramount Television.

Santora will write, executive produce and serve as showrunner for the series.

Child’s Jack Reacher is a billion-dollar brand published in 49 languages and 101 territories. With more than 100 million books sold, the series has commanded over a billion dollars in global sales. Amazon Studios recently greenlit Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan for a third season, which is also a Paramount Television and Skydance Television production.

Santora executive produces alongside Lee Child, Don Granger and Christopher McQuarrie. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Marcy Ross executive produce for Skydance. Carolyn Harris oversees the project for Skydance.

Santora currently has two projects in the works with Quibi – an action thriller with Liam Hemsworth attached to star and a new take on The Fugitive, with Thunder Road Films, 3 Arts Entertainment and Warner Bros. TV. Santora created, exec produced and ran drama series Scorpion, which aired for four seasons on CBS. He also co-created and exec produced Breakout Kings, which aired for two seasons on A&E and co-executive produced Fox’s Prison Break.

Skydance Television’s slate includes the Emmy-nominated Grace and Frankie and Altered Carbon, Condor and Foundation.

Paramount Television’s roster includes Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, 13 Reasons Why, The Alienist, First Wives Club, Looking for Alaska and Home Before Dark.

I’m in. I was just mentioning that even though the physical description in the books is nothing like Tom Cruise, I actually like the movies.

This is a good landing spot, Bosch has been an absolute Gem for Amazon, so I am hoping we can see many many seasons of Jack Reacher...

I've been reading the books (I'm up to One Shot, the one the 1st movie was based on), unless they add/extend some characters this could basically be an anthology series, where each season is a completely different story with different characters except for Reacher.

Season 1 came out in August. But Amazon has done absolutely no marketing for season 2 other than a few coming soon spots. July is half over, so not sure if it’s coming in August.

That's who I thought of, at least from a build perspective. Maybe he can pull it off. I do want to see a BIG Reacher this time.

Like I said in July i'm currently making my way through the books, what I picture in my head is pretty much Dave Bautista but lighter skinned.

They will probably cast Daniel Radcliffe or Elijah Wood.

Alan Ritchson from Titans is the new Jack Reacher.

He also played Aquaman in Smallville.

Never heard of him, but that picture of him in the article hits the nail on the head when describing Jack Reacher. Looks like he can pull off the stone cold look easily.
