Black Mirror (Netflix) -- Season 4 Thread

Netflix has announced the episode titles and cast for “Black Mirror’s” fourth season, which will premiere on the streaming service later this year.

Since “Black Mirror” is an anthology series, each episode is designed as a standalone story. Each one explores the theme of “collective unease with the modern world,” depicting various new ways advanced technology transforms lives – from rating every interaction to uploading one’s consciousness after death to virtually live forever.

The episodes listed below are in alphabetical order and do not necessarily reflect the order they will be presented in when available for streaming. Series creator Charlie Brooker has written every episode of the fourth season.
  • “Arkangel” stars Rosemarie Dewitt, Brenna Harding and Owen Teague. It is directed by Jodie Foster.
  • “Black Museum” stars Douglas Hodge, Letitia Wright and Babs Olusanmokun. It is directed by Colm McCarthy.
  • “Crocodile” stars Andrea Riseborough, Andrew Gower and Kiran Sonia Sawar. It is directed by John Hillcoat.
  • “Hang the DJ” stars Georgina Campbell, Joe Cole and George Blagden. It is directed by Tim Van Patten.
  • “Metalhead” stars Maxine Peake, Jake Davies and Clint Dyer. It is directed by David Slade.
  • “USS Callister” stars Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson and Michaela Coel. It is directed by Toby Haynes. Brooker has co-written this episode with William Bridges.

Never heard of these actors, I only know just the two directors Jodie Foster and Tim Van Patten.

I know all the ones from “USS Callister”
Jesse Plemons = Meth Damon from Breaking Bad
Cristin Milioti = Mom from HIMYM
Jimmi Simpson = McPoyle on Always Sunny

John Hillcoat directed The Road and Lawless (and The Proposition)
David Slade directed Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night

And Rosemarie Dewitt always struck me as one of those people expected to be big but never quite made it.

Jesus, Crocodile was the most fucked up episode of any season so far. Too dark to even be entertaining, really. Hopefully it’ll turn out to be the only low point of the season. USS Callister was really good, and Arkangel was decent. I’ll catch the final 3 tonight.

The Star Trek episode was great. It was along, too. 76 minutes. I'll be binging the rest today.

Re: Black Mirror -- British anthology series -- Channel 4 / Netflix

I love Black Mirror but I feel like they're starting to run out of fresh concepts and are recycling a few too many ideas in slightly different scenarios.

As such, I'm a little mixed on the Callister episode but Milioti fucking rocked in it.

That’s how I felt about it too.

The voice cameo was a nice treat.

I'm episode 3. The 2nd one was fucked up and directed by Jodie Foster.

Ahhhh

Metalhead just looked goofy in spots, took some cues from Tetsuo which was cool but I wish they shot on grittier cameras.

Re: Black Mirror -- British anthology series -- Channel 4 / Netflix

Just wrapped it up and another cool season in the books.

My ranking:

USS Callister
Black Museum
Hang the DJ
Crocodile
Arkangel
Metalhead

I guess season 6 will have the continuation of San Junipero, right?

Re: Black Mirror -- British anthology series -- Channel 4 / Netflix

Through the first three so far ...

I thought Arkangel was the darkest, but maybe that’s because I can totally see my wife doing something like that. She is constantly checking where the kids are on their phones and creeping on social media.

Jodie Foster did a great job directing that one. I really thought it would end with
Spoiler:
the daughter committing suicide due to a broken teenage heart
but instead
Spoiler:
the emergency contraception
was royally fucked up. I had to cave and look up the actress to see where I knew her from — Mad Men.

Crocodile was just dark. Why the title though? I didn’t get the connection. I think there were some social issues to be explored that they left on the table in lieu of just telling a messed up story: private companies (insurance) coercing people to give access to their thoughts, the security of the information we do share, etc.

USS Callister was pretty enjoyable and I liked the cast. The video game concept has been done a few times, but this was a bit of a different perspective.

Hoping to wrap up the last three tomorrow night.

Yeah, not sure why the title. I watched it trying to see any connection but couldn't figure it out.

Next season is Season 5. And there is no actual confirmation that they are doing that.

Re: Black Mirror -- British anthology series -- Channel 4 / Netflix

^ Ah, gotcha.

Although there was some nice Easter egg stuff in
Spoiler:
Black Museum
that talked about the early tech used
Spoiler:
in San Junipero.
I almost thought that one was a prequel of sorts until it wasn't.

As far as Crocodile as a title - I initially thought it was going to be about the drug that causes people's skin to rot off and look like crocodile hide. Glad it had nothing to do with that.

Re: Black Mirror -- British anthology series -- Channel 4 / Netflix

I figured Crocodile was just named after crocodiles, they latch on, drag you down, and they simply do not let go which is pretty descriptive of the plot.

I thought it did a nice job of just exploring the side effects of this particular technology. Something so incredibly innocent leading to an inevitable chain reaction. And it is also the most beautifully shot episode yet.

Nice. I caught that too. I think what Brooker said once is he would do lilttle Easter eggs like that about it. So it’s nice he actually did.

I was surprised to see that Hillcoat did this one and not Metalhead. Crocodile seems more up Slade’s alley and Metalhead Hillcoat’s. But it was interesting to see.
