After this last season, I can see why. The report says Rothberg has always wanted to end it with the seventh, but it really didn't seem like it with the whole "Book 1" ordeal and whatnot.

The announcement was made by Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW at the TCAsummer press tour. He said that Rothberg had always wanted to end The 100 after the seventh season and that has a number of ideas that he wants to develop. “We’ve been very good at listening to our showrunner creators about the right time to end our series,” he said.

The word "cancel" does not imply who responsible for that decision. As an ongoing series, that is now ending, it has now been canceled, seemingly by the creator in this case.

This season hasn't been bad. Still very much enjoyable.
