The 2000's Tom Hanks CNN produced series 7/8/2018

So far they did the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's and now the attention turns to the 2000's.

Probably will not hold that much in regards for the nostalgia for the 80's and 90's but time is flying by and a lot of this stuff is now in the distant past.

From Emmy Award–winning executive producers Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Mark Herzog comes The 2000s. The seven-part CNN Original Series explores the cultural and political milestones of the decade including technological triumphs like the iPhone and social media, President George W. Bush’s war on terror and response to Hurricane Katrina, Barack Obama’s presidential election and the financial crisis, hip-hop’s rise to dominance, and a creative renaissance in television.

The Paley Center is delighted to present a premiere screening of part one, which focuses on TV in the 2000s and the groundbreaking series that rose to prominence including Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Arrested Development, and Everybody Loves Raymond.

They're re-running the various 70s, 80s, 90s shows now until the premiere of the 2000s.

A tip for those planning to record this: record every airing and pad about 30 minutes and maybe one of those recordings will actually contain the episode.

Yeah be wary of CNN’s “Breaking News” Some episodes of the 80s and 90s were preempted due to that.

The series might end in Sept or Oct if breaking news preempts these shows which CNN always does.

Re: The 2000's Tom Hanks CNN produced series 7/8/2018

The 'TV episode' was very good because it showed the seismic shift from movies to TV around the turn of the century and where the quality was headed for each medium. TV was going to take more risks and movies were going to play more safe with sequels. It makes sense, IMO, because that is kind of when I stopped going to the movies on a regular basis and started watching more and more cable dramas. What's great about this special is you can make a list of the great dramas you missed in the past 18 years as I still have to watch Lost, The Shield, Six Feet Under, and Deadwood.

Heh.

Early 2000s era nostalgia is already a thing?

More generally, wonder if nostalgia cycles have been "shortening/shrinking" ?

While I generally agree that we are only one decade removed as there is not much nostalgia in this special, I look at how much everything has evolved since the turn of the century. To think back to 1999, there was no texting, not everyone had a cell phone, we were still going to Tower Records to buy CD's and Blockbuster to rent VHS movies on the weekend, the internet was in it's early stages. The technology in the past 15-20 years is really astounding, hopefully one of the episodes covers this subject. And then you had an event like 9/11 and how it literally changed the way we do everything in our daily lifes too. I know every decade had it's technology jump but these changes because of the internet really changed our economy.

Re: The 2000's Tom Hanks CNN produced series 7/8/2018

I really enjoyed the 2 hour premiere about TV in the 2000s.

Lots of great information and interviews. One thing important they touched on was how TV really grew creatively in this decade and now with cable, it's becoming a medium where more actors and feature film creative people want to become involved in.

They talked about shows that became important in the decade like the HBO shows, The Shield, Mad Men. Especially Mad Men, because that was the show that changed AMC from being a network that just shows old movies to being a creative powerhouse in basic cable.

They also talked about binge watching and 24 was credited in this 1st episode as starting the whole phenomenon when people were addicted to watching it on DVD. Basically the serialized drama became big in this decade.

Good stuff. I look forward to seeing what's covered in the coming weeks.

Re: The 2000's Tom Hanks CNN produced series 7/8/2018

Another shift is now how the quality shows are disappearing from cable and now going to Netflix.

Maybe nitpicking but some of the shows like Oz and the Sopranos started in the late 90's.

I wish they did episodes on movies and sports but CNN never covers those subjects in this series.

Re: The 2000's Tom Hanks CNN produced series 7/8/2018

Watched this last night and thought it did a decent job of covering everything.

Highlighted the important HBO shows such as Oz, The Wire and The Sopranos - the initial feeling with The Sopranos and it's success was attributed to the fact that it had no commercials. Then The Shield came along and proved that wrong - which opened the door for the influx of scripted cable showswe started and continue to see. As mentioned above, Mad Men was uniquely important in that it single-handedly transformed the image of AMC.

I like how they touched on individual episodes of a few series from pilots to finales and they managed to sneak in a quick blurb from Lindelhof regarding the Lost finale.

Just finished episode 2.

Basically it covered the 2000 election, 9/11 and the War on Iraq.

It was pretty boring to be honest. Nothing that we didn't already know already.

I've been liking one a bit better than the 2000s docseries that NatGeo did.

Yes, I tried watching the 80's back in 2016, but most of the time the show was bumped to to "breaking news" when it really could have waited until the show was over.

We haven’t watched nor do I think we will, although we enjoyed the other installments.

The 60s was the first series. I’d like it if they’d do something on the 50s and 40s, but don’t think they’d have enough archival footage to use, as that’s what they rely on a lot.

Re: The 2000's Tom Hanks CNN produced series 7/8/2018

I saw the 3rd episode about Bush's 2nd term. Really it just showed how clueless he was and how he was manipulated into the whole Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. And his Presidency ended on a whimper. And it briefly covered the 2008 financial crisis and the bank bail out that prevented the country from going into another depression.

If you don't find any of that interesting or don't want to re-live that again, then maybe you should skip that episode.

Whatever you think of his politics this was bad ass.

Tomorrows episode is on the 2008 economic meltdown so that will be fun

The music episode if they do one should be interesting to watch.

I would hope that would be true of ALL the decades covered.

To paraphrase Mitch Hedberg, show me a documentary about decade when you are older and then you got yourself a show.

Re: The 2000's Tom Hanks CNN produced series 7/8/2018

I caught up with 3 episodes tonight.

The i decade

The Financial Crisis

and Yes we can

Probably my favorite of the 3 was the i decade episode. Shows how tech evolved in the 2000's and how we're now heavily reliant on social media and devices. It was interesting to see them go through Friendster, Myspace, Facebook and Twitter.

zyzzle doesn't watch TV and won't read this thread, but his eyes would roll at that episode.

I'm pissed that I wasn't smart enough back in 2004 to buy some Google stock. Ughhh.

Re: The 2000's Tom Hanks CNN produced series 7/8/2018

Pop music was really bad in the early 2000's with the boy bands and Britney Spears.

Glad it evolved and became better when the decade was about to end.

The series did not have to end and they could have done shows on sports and movies before concluding.

Tom Hanks is a Raiders and A's fan and surprised they never do sports episodes on these CNN decade series.
