It's just a teaser and doesn't really tell anything, but visually it looks interesting.

I'll be curious at Robert Meyer Burnett thinks. He absolutely loathes this new Star Trek. The only series he liked was Picard season 3. If you don't know who he is, he hosted the TNG reunion on the season 1 BD and produced it and is a big Star Trek fan.

Since it has a lot of women and minorities in it, I'm sure he's going to hate it.

I was kinda meh on the Academy project since it’s set in the Disco future but the teaser seems to give a different vibe than I was expecting. Might be interesting after all.

This guy is already hating on it.

The teaser is just visuals (none of which looked bad) and some voiceover. He goes as far as to criticise how Holly Hunter sits in the captain's chair, because she seems unsure. Well, since this is in the Disco future and this is the first time Starfleet Academy class year in seemingly forever, I would expect her to be unsure of herself. Heck, I took it as a moment of introspection. As for Paul Giamatti whistling the theme tune, I found it amusing (though I wouldn't be surprised if he's whistling something else during the actual scene once the show airs).

It's a lot of confirmation bias, but he has some general points I do share. Why do they go on with the Disco timeline? Star Trek always had a diverse cast, which is one of the great things about the franchise, but in Disco it was unintentionally funny how they picked the cast and characters.
I'm not against the idea of a Starfleet Academy show, but I doubt they'll make it good if Disco is the starting off point.

Trek news from SDCC relating to the rest of Strange New Worlds: https://trekmovie.com/2025/07/29/pup...-sdcc-reveals/

The rumor that the show will end where TOS begins is confirmed. Some wacky stuff is coming, but I'm all in. They've done a great job so far.

Great news... I hoped they ended SNW at the beginning of the TOS era.

I didn't know where else to post this, but William Shatner is asking fans to pre-order his new book in order to unlock access to a site where you can submit whatever nice things you have to say about Shatner. And then his team will edit select submissions into a new book. So he's asking you to pay up in advance and then kiss his ass. You don't want to miss out on the chance for him to fund his retirement without writing a single word of text now, do you?

Shatner is worth over 100m and in his 90's. His retirement was paid for a long time ago.

Brannon Braga, former Star Trek EP, was just at the Star Trek Las Vegas Con recently. He mentioned he’s not a fan of these short 10 episode seasons that shows, including Star Trek, have been doing. He thinks you build longer lasting audience relationships with more episodes like the old TV days.

However, I think with the current environment with TV, it’s just not possible for most series. Especially new science fiction and all the post production required. Plus it costs a hell of a lot more now.

Read the article if you want to get the full context of his comments.

Re: Future Star Trek TV projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

I think around fifteen episodes would be good for a lot of shows. Not too few, but not too many either. It is annoying how shows have gradually gotten shorter and shorter, and the wait between seasons is longer and longer.

For a long time twenty plus episodes was pretty standard. Then cable shows became more popular and a lot of those were twelve episodes. Now we’re at ten or in some cases less.

Re: Future Star Trek TV projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

I agree with Braga. Should have longer seasons. But I also agree with the whole pandora's box dilemma with that. We were happy with having 24 episode seasons of shows with a much lower budget. To just look at Star Trek. STD came out at a time where studios were pushing all their chips on streaming. So budget was almost no object. Despite how divisive the show is overall one thing that everyone can agree on is it looks damn good. Movie budget good. So that's already raised the bar. Fast forward to now and studios are starting to find out that streaming isn't some panacea to profit and is a lot more volatile than traditional TV and movies. So how do you convince the studios to sink even more money in to the budget when they're starting to cut back? And would we be happy with more episodes that aren't produced as well?

I think this quote from Braga is hilarious:

“Well, clearly, given ‘Threshold,’ there were no rejected ideas. We left nothing on the table.”

So there are some downsides to having too many episodes. But still, even with the clunker episodes there are still usually some great character moments that happen in those episodes.

Also I think this season of SNW could have really benefitted from more episodes.

Re: Future Star Trek TV projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

I think that the season lengths feel too arbitrary.

Picard, especially the first two seasons, seems like it could have been tightened up and gotten by on fewer episodes, maybe eight or even six per season.

SNW, on the other hand, definitely needs more than ten per season. Even giving it twelve or thirteen might have helped pad it out a bit; with only ten episodes the tone is just all over the place. One week someone is being traumatized to the point of severe PTSD, the next week it's screwball comedy. You know, at least a pack a go-to-a-planet-and-something-weird-happens story between them to act as a buffer.

DIS, like Picard, could have used some tightening. With the serialized nature of the show, giving it thirteen-to-fifteen episodes a season it felt both stretched it too thin and all over the place at the same time. And even then, folks were complaining about a lack of character development among the supporting cast. It's like, yeah, they have a large cast and a dozen episodes to play with, but they just kept packing them with plot and it became overwhelming.

tanman 09-23-25 10:26 PM

Re: Future Star Trek TV projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

Yes that's absolutely true. 10 episode seasons definitely helped me get through STD and Picard season 1 and 2. And even as much as I liked season 3 the number of episodes was perfect to tell the story they were telling.

SNW and LD could definitely have used more episodes and more creative elbow room.

Think of all the now iconic episodes that likely would have been left on the chopping room floor if you were to chop any of the other Trek shows down to 10 episodes. I'm sure episodes like The Best of Both Worlds, Yesterday's Enterprise, and The Way of the Warrior would have made the cut. But what about the cult classics like Darmok, Families, It's Only a Paper Moon, I doubt it if any of those would have made the cut.

I always wondered what became of Star Trek Continues. I wasn't aware CBS sued them. Bizarre since Trek fanfics/fan films/etc. were always allowed so long as they were not for profit.

Re: Future Star Trek TV projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

You can blame Alec Peters and Axanar for it. Raised 2 million and was using actual Trek actors.

Re: Future Star Trek TV projects discussion thread - News, rumors, etc.

Yeah, I think that video is a bit disingenuous.

It's Axanar that made Paramount crack down on Star Trek fan productions. Paramount was willing to look the other way while high quality fan films were being produced using their trademarked and copyrighted property.

But then, Axanar came along and ruined it for everyone. They kept poking the bear. They had already raised over a million dollars for it, but, probably even more problematic, they were prepping a lot of merchandise based on it: models, t-shirts, books. Of course Paramount is going to shut that shit down.

Merchandise [AxaMonitor]

It's really a shame it had to go down like that, as Axanar looked like it would be a high quality production, judging by the Prelude to Axanar feature.

Star Trek Continues was also really quite good. They really nailed the look and feel of TOS, and, except for the actors replacing the classic crew, it could almost pass for lost episodes. Apart from the expected Star Trek actors, there are also guest spots from a number of sci-fi notables like Colin Baker (Doctor Who), Gigi Edgley (Farscape), Clare Kramer (Buffy), and Lou Ferrigno (Incredible Hulk), which are fun. But there's some stuff that gets a bit thick, like Mignogna writing his then-girlfriend in as a sort of Mary Sue who tends to eat up a little too much screen time. (Mignogna also faced accusations of being a sex pest.)

I posted about this in the Podcast Master Thread over in Streaming Talk, but I figured it may especially be of interest to those who follow this thread.

Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes have a new podcast! It is not all about Star Trek, but they sit and talk and share stories with other people in the entertainment industry. Their first guest is their ST:TNG colleague LeVar Burton, and in this week's episode (S1E3) they welcome Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk.

They have video versions on youtube, but it should also be available in audio through your preferred podcast app.
