Re: Happy 30th Anniversary, Star Trek: The Next Generation!

Hard to believe it's been 30 years since this first came out. I remeber waiting for weeks to watch it. I had seen some episodes of TOS and the second through the fourth movies at that time but wasn't much of a Trek fan before TNG.

I don't know what my favorite episode would be, but I always liked the episode with the Seven of Nine prototype "Hugh" in the "I, Borg" episode.

Re: Happy 30th Anniversary, Star Trek: The Next Generation!

I believe the first time I remember hearing about TNG was on the Star Trek IV VHS! I remember rewinding and watching that a bunch of times. The other thing that makes TNG’s success impactful is that it happened in syndication.

My favorite episode is Yesterday’s Enterprise, probably followed closely by All Good Things...

I’m a sucker for time travel, so that certainly helps YE. However, it actually set up a loophole to allow Tasha Yar to come back. Quite interesting too, because I don’t think anybody was worried when she left. However, the plot twist by bringing her back tricked in later on.

I seem to recall Times Arrow being a good twoparter too. I think the crew acted as a traveling acting troope. .

I enjoyed TNG. My favorite episode is Data's Day mostly because I loved the introspective of following a particular crew member around through their day to day. But Inner Light will always shine as the episode I think was the best.

Born in '82 so I grew up with TNG. The Borg were scary as heck back then. Good times.

Edit: Favorite episode: Best of Both Worlds 1/2.
Also like Remember Me and Q Who.

Thank you for that. "Q Who" never seems to get much love. It's a pitch perfect episode, with terrific writing, directing, and scoring, not too mention you get Q *and* The Borg in one episode! But, this ep is never put in any top 10 lists in any Trek tribute magazines.

I wouldn't put Q Who in the top 10, but certainly in the top 20. Personally I've seen it aired right before Best of Both Worlds when they do marathons and it works very well as essentially episode trilogy.

Re: Happy 30th Anniversary, Star Trek: The Next Generation!

I love TNG my favorite TV series. Like many people the series that got me hooked on Star Trek.

Best episodes? That's tough as there are so many to choose.

There have already been a lot of episode mentioned and get mentioned frequently The Best of Both Worlds, Yesterday's Enterprise, Cause and Effect
Some of my personal favorites are some of the more "quiet" episodes that just show day to day life on the Enterprise. So I'll mention some episodes that don't usually get much attention.

Data's Day Following around Data for one day and showing what a typical day in the life of the android on board the enterprise was a great way to develop the character.

In Theory I think I just loved Data because this is another favorite. Data tries to court another crew member with mixed results.

Lower Decks I loved the idea of showing our beloved bridge officers from the perspectives of lowly ensigns. Also the way they put together the story piece by piece was great.

Family This episode is highly underrated. After the masterpiece that was The Best of Both Worlds Picard has to deal with the aftermath of that experience. It's a very intimate look at Picard and his family.

And there are so many episodes that stand out just based on Patrick Stewart's acting.
Darmok Shakka, when the walls fell
Chain of Command There are FOUR lights
Sarek The whole scene where Picard is alone with Beverly and overwhelmed by the transfer of pent up emotions from Sarek is amazing to watch.
Tapestry Who wouldn't want a look at what your life would be like without all your mistakes?
The Inner Light Of course this one gets mentioned all the time but it really is a masterpiece of science fiction. Absolutely one of the best hours of television. This is the rare Star Trek episode that transcends Star Trek and maybe even science fiction in general. It doesn't require any prior knowledge of the characters and can be appreciated by any audience.

My favorite unnamed episodes are Who Watches the Watchmen and Clues. WWtW has this great concept as what can happen with the prime directive, and here's this primetime show that's calling religion a dangerous "belief in the supernatural," and they really manage to crank up the conflict throughout the episode.
They try to have a number of mystery episodes but the only one that really works is Clues.

So many of the lesser TNG episodes revolve around the Holodeck as a cheap way to produce one more episode. But one of my favorites is "Ship in a Bottle". But a lot of that has to do with Daniel Davis, who played Moriarty twice on TNG.

I think you mean "Who Watches the Watchers", and yes, that is a fantastic piece of Trek. Picard willing to die to fix the Prime Directive violation is just fantastic.

If they're having to build sets, that's not necessarily a cheaper way of doing it. Unless they can re-use existing ones.

But Ship in a Bottle is a great holodeck episode, though it raises more questions about ethical AI creation than it answers.

Other than maybe All Good Things..., Lower Decks is my favourite episode in Season 7. It was really interesting to see life onboard the ship from the POV of the lowly ensigns. It also confirmed to me something that I was suspecting for awhile, and that was Riker is an asshole. He treated Sam like shit for no good reason. The ending was also very sad. It was an inspired idea to use Sito again.

Family is one of those episodes, along with Darmok and The Inner Light, that I did not appreciate as a kid when I first watched them, but now really enjoy and appreciate.

A good bet that at least some of the props/costumes/sets already existed. Is some cases even more than usual.

That's exactly why I consider it one of the best episodes.

Rorschach? haha

Yes I forgot about Clues that was a great one. Very well written. Although the premise of it would kind of fall apart the moment they got to a Starbase. "Merry Christmas Admiral!" "What are you talking about it's February.", "wait wut?"

See TNG gets shit on for having more of an episodic nature than DS9 but the more I watch it the more I appreciate the subtle things that they did bring back. It doesn't require you to have a prior knowledge of previous episodes to enjoy that one but it does enhance it. Watching and knowing what happened to cadet Sito and the coverup she was involved in makes her interaction with Picard that much more meaningful. And shows you a lot of his character as a Captain.

They did this multiple times that I can think of. Another quiet episode I forgot to mention is Lessons where Picard dates a science officer under his command. Knowing how private he is, the scene where plays that song and he shares with her his experience on the Inner Light is very significant. Also that roll up piano was so cool

Also I think one of the hallmarks of a good show/movie/book is when you can go back at different times of your life and appreciate it on a different level. As a kid (and still now) the big battles and set pieces and cool technology are a lot of fun and spectacular but now for me I can appreciate a lot more of the nuances that I didn't before.

"Brothers" is another episode that needs more recognition. First off, Brent Spiner deserved an Emmy for his triple performance as Data, Lore and Soong. But, more than that, how well directed, edited and written (by Rick Berman) the episode is as Data so chillingly and systematically takes control of the Enterprise. And Ron Jones' score was amazing as always. This one gets 4-stars from me easily.

The Data/Sherlock Holmes ones are another example. Can't recall the name, but the one where Moriarty escapes the holodeck and takes over the Enterprise and how he's tricked at the end.

I alway enjoyed Qpid where Q turned the crew into Robin Hood and Merry Men.

Worf: "Captain, I protest. I'm not a Merry Man."

Interestingly that's the second episode with Vash. I watched her introduction a few weeks back because it was on and I recall that being a good episode (doesn't hold up as well and Picard makes stupid decisions). Afterwards I looker her up and she was only in 3 episodes including one on DS9. I could have sworn she was in more!

The DS9 episode she was in wasn't particularly good but it did have Sisko knocking Q on his butt. That's something I had wanted to see for a very long time.
