The accident prone wood shop teacher played by Clancy Brown was great.

Man, that spin-off was straight-up painful to watch. I can see why it was never picked up, what I can't figure out is how it even aired.

That was awful. Why did ABC even bother airing it? That should've just been a monetary write-off.

Watched it this morning on Hulu. Had no idea what the episode was about.
Holy fuck that was straight up crazy! Just the idea of making the one-note cartoon gym teacher a regular character is bat-shit.
And how painful and awkward was setting up the new characters!? Horrible dialogue where the family talks to each other by describing each other and their pasts. ("You are my brother and you have always been there to support me when I made mistakes." "You are my sister and you are the strongest person I know.")
Bev showing up at the beginning and end totally reminded me of the Simpsons Spin-offs

I remember when the spin-off was proposed and for some reason I thought it had been picked up by ABC...guess not. Based on last nights episode it is no big loss and why wouldn't ABC air this episode as it was already in the can.
Failed spin-offs have made it to air during a shows run plenty of times in the past...the failed spin-off attempts during the Married With Children years come to mind (the one with Alan Thicke was particularly bad...kinda surprised MWC was so bad at putting together spin-off attempts that were not complete crap).
ETA: Deadline says The Goldbergs had a solid night in the 18-49 ratings so maybe the show runners can figure out a way to fold-in some of the proposed spin-off characters into future The Goldberg's episodes.

I remember a few times they tried to do a spinoff on The Facts of Life. One was when Jo went to visit her cousin, a teenage girl who worked in the family garage. I only remember that because the cousin was played by the always likeable Megan Follows. Another one had Natalie living in an NYC loft with Richard Grieco and David Spade. The odd part of that wsd Spade played a young surgical intern, distraught over losing his first patient. Maybe the only time he played serious his entire career.

Looks like I made the correct decision when I turned it off after they explained what the episode was, about.

That was awful, if only because it literally seemed like it should be called The Black Goldbergs. I know pilots are often stiff and characters haven't been fully fleshed out. For all I know, maybe if it got a few episodes it coulda gotten legs and grown into its own show. But sheesh... it just seemed like they replaced (almost) all the white actors with black actors, but kept all the same character traits of the original characters. Talk about pandering!

Yeah, agreed. It's almost as if the show runners got a memo from Disney/ABC that "you can have a show but you have to diversify, i.e., we need more black people, cause we need to check all the boxes." It felt insulting that they were cramming this agenda down our throats. Disney is hell bent on being the content creator/provider that will please everyone. Last night's episode plain sucked ass. I want that 30 minutes of my life back Adam Goldberg. What the fuck was that shit!?! It felt forced and didn't have any of the genuine warmth that makes the Goldbergs so appealing. When the spin off was originally announced I was cautiously optimistic. These things usually never pan out, I can count on two fingers how many spin off shows were ever successful in the history of television. Goldberg had the potential to capture that lightning and run with it with the coach concept and then ultimately shit the bed... big time.
It's almost as if Goldberg forgot what makes Tim Meadows character so perfectly flawed, the fact that we don't need to see him interact with a wife or in this case his sister. The sister plot device was a cop out that sucked the life/funny out of the pathetic Mr. Glsacott.
And what the hell? Nice jumping of the shark. Wasn't this entire show/concept going to center around the coach character? WTF!?! Nice bait and switch. Instead of the coach Miller show we got the Black-ish-bergs.
I should have known something wasn't right when almost the entire cast of the Goldbergs hit social media hard pleading for fans to tune in to the funniest spin off episode.

The opening seemed to imply that The Goonies was directed by Spielberg.
There's no way anyone in the '80s had a copy of Back to the Future with Eric Stoltz. No one even has that today.

And what I noticed in the episode was that the Devils fan who chases Barry around the bus station was wearing a red/black jersey. The Devils wore red/green until 1992.

Goldbergs 90's spinoff picked to series.
AJ Michalka to star
This is a retooled version. The rejected one aired back in January.
Edit: Corrected myself. AJ was on this show. Aly is on iZombie.

I'll probably watch it. Just caught up with the latest season. That actress that plays Erica needs to lay off the catering table. Eeek.

Joan Jett did not write "I Love Rock and Roll". She didn't even record it first. It was a cover song. While I wouldn't expect Erica to know that, I would expect the older Adam (Oswalt) to know that.
My DVR caught off the end of the show. How was the real Barry's pitch?

They didn’t say how the real pitch went or if it happened. They showed that the Phillies recently invited the real Adam to throw out the first pitch and Mike Schmidt showed up as the catcher.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) -- Season 5 Thread -- premieres 9/27/17
There was no real pitch when he was a kid the entire episode was fiction based on him throwing out the pitch as an adult.
This was a season or 2 ago when the Phillies had a Goldberg’s night.
He threw it to Schmidt and he made a good throw.
You bay have noticed when actor Barry threw his pitch it was the current Phillies stadium. CBP
