I sure hope they don't have any timeline inaccuracies, or that might ruin this show for me.

Can. Not. Wait. I love this show.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) -- Season 5 Thread -- premieres 9/27/17

Counting down till someone complains that Adam is in line for the premiere of Raiders of the Lost Ark at the same time Barry is practicing to be the next MC Hammer. Or something like that.

What I really do hope they avoid though is repeating themes and stories they've done before. My only complaint about the show is that there's a lot of episodes where Beverly goes over the top and alienates one of the kids, then the kid realizes it's because they won't be living there forever. Heartfelt make-up scene. Credits.

As I mentioned in the other Goldbergs thread, I've been catching up on some early episodes since I didn't star watching till around the second season. There's already been a couple of times where I said "Oh, I've seen this episode", but it turns out I really hadn't. Just that the newer episode I saw was kind of a retread on the earlier one.

One thing I did like in a season 1 episode I saw recently was Adam and Emmy playing Nintendo, and Emmy blew into the cartridge before inserting it. I can only imagine that some writer or producer had to explain to the young actress that that was what you did with NES cartridges.

Good to see Wyatt from Weird Science as the science teacher. His last credit in IMDB was from 1991!

I guess that Barry must have been a big fan of either Mystic Pizza or Steel Magnolias...otherwise Julie Roberts didn't break out until 1990 with Pretty Woman.

Very funny stuff. But I'm not sure how much longer they'll be able to sell Barry as a high schooler with his receding hairline.

ok, i don't watch this show regularly at all. maybe catch a repeat now and again, but rare.

but, when i do, Patton Oswalt starts off "it was 1980 something...".

but, they see movies that played in the 80's during their release. why the anonymity?

If that’s a real question, it’s because movies that were released in the 80’s were also released in 1980 something.

Because the show notoriously jumps around in time, so the "80 something" is to basically admit it's 80s pop culture in general and not represent a specific year. Something a lot of people posting in Goldbergs' threads fail to understand.

For example, a few episodes ago the kids' uncle was inspired by the movie Wall Street to become a stock broker. He loses everyone's money because he invests it in Atari, which crashes due to the failure of the E.T. video game.
(although I did have a gripe with this particular episode, in that it has Adam all excited about said video game, even though Adam has previously been shown to be a fan of the Nintendeo NES. Hard to believe that he'd be excited over an Atari 2600 game. The end credits do show the real Adam Goldberg playing the ET game, so obviously it is something from his childhood, I just think it should have been done earlier in the show's run, like season 1 or 2.)

Did you ever see Thirtysomething? It was a show about people in their thirties.

80 + Something = 80 + 0; 80 + 1; 80 + 2; etc.

All of my teen years were during the 80's, this show continues to remind me of things I'd forgotten.
I love Big Tasty, but miss Lainey.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) -- Season 5 Thread -- premieres 9/27/17

OldBoy can speak for himself, but I think his question is, why does it begin with the generic "80-something", when the episode is about something specific like Top Gun (for example)? Obviously, Top Gun came out in 1986, so why not SAY 1986?

And as I pointed out, the show hopscotches around 80s pop culture events (often in the same episode, and not chronologically), so it doesn't want to pigeon-hole itself to a specific year.

Yeah. The voice over says it takes place in 1980 something because the show takes place in 1980 something. They go to movies and watch TV shows that were popular in 1980 something. They aren't more specific so that they can jump around and dont have to worry about continuity and anachronisms as much. It isn't a documentary. It's someones recollections of the past, which at times can be jumbled or confused.

Yeah, the anachronisms let different timeline based storylines happen at the same time, like somebody's memory trying to place where events should go chronologically. This way they can talk about The Goonies coming out and something from 1989 in the same episode and not have to explain why.

Re: The Goldbergs (ABC) -- Season 5 Thread -- premieres 9/27/17

The recent episode about Can't Buy Me Love really crossed the line showing a current toy. I got used to them jumping around with the time line but to blatantly show something current is so lame.

I still enjoy the show...but it is quickly becoming a watch in the background show for me, although I think Rowan Blanchard has been a great addition to the cast as it surprised me how effortless it was for me to accept her as a part time member of The Goldberg's ensemble.

They are going to air the rejected Goldbergs spinoff on January 24th. Looks like its a possible attempt to get a season order from it.

Surprised Hulu didn't pick it up since they already air Goldbergs.

Tonight’s might have been the funniest one yet. When the mom wanted to sub crab cakes for the bernaise sauce and Barry heard Tony Roma’s had good shrimp scampi I was crying.

Yeah I thought it was about him in the 90's. Even Hulu rejected it so it must be bad.

Was this episode based on a specific movie? It seemed that way with the title cards.

If that was even close to how the Goldberg family acted in real life, I'd be surprised if they weren't banned from multiple restaurants.
