Re: Adam West dead at 88

Wow this one sucks big time. Watching the 66 Batman series is a big part of what made me love the character. I remember when I was younger watching reruns on The Family Channel daily and always staying hooked by the cliffhangers. If I wasn't home I'd tape it and I still have a tape from when they were airing a farewell marathon (not sure if they lost the rights or what) which I would pop in on occasion until it came back to syndication on FX I believe and later to TV Land. Yes the show is cheesy but very fun for it's time and very memorable. RIP Mr. West aka Batman.

On a side note I wonder if he recorded his lines for what was going to be the sequel to the animated Return of the Caped Crusaders movie.

Re: Adam West dead at 88

I wonder if Family Guy prepared itself for this with a contingent plan (knowing how old he was). Looking back I had the opportunity to meet him, but I guess I passed when I was at various conventions--that's a sad thing to consider. RIP, Caped Crusader...

Looks like he possibly got through doing the voice for another DC animated Batman release that would be the last thing he worked on. Hopefully it works as a great swan song!

Man, this one hurts. After a rough couple of decades, I was always happy to see that he made a good career later in life as a voice actor. He deserved it.

Re: Adam West dead at 88

Man, that sucks.

I know he was old, but he was still sharp as a tack and didn't sound like an old man when he talked. He was still ADAM WEST!

He was the absolutely perfect TV Batman, and that almost ruined his career. He could do comedy or drama and he always came across well, but being Batman hyper typecast him and definitely hurt his career. Still, he did keep fairly busy over the last decade or two doing voice work (and doing it very well, too), so he found his niche.

But if you grew up in the late 60's or anytime in the 70's it's hard not to love Adam West.

He will be missed.

I found a comment on the Toonzone forum from Feb. that said West and Shatner had recorded their lines separately, which makes it sound like it had already been done. Giving the age of the principals, I'd imagine getting them recorded was a priority.

Re: Adam West dead at 88

Yeah this one hit me hard. Adam West was the first Batman I ever had exposure to and I used to watch the show religiously. I would occasionally see him at conventions and never met him because of the crazy autograph prices he charged and I couldn't afford it. I kind of regret that now.

On another note, with all the hate the 60's series has gotten over the years from hardcore fans, it's nice to see love of it start to come around in a positive way again and to have people embrace it in a positive way.

I watched it a few months back and found it interesting.

He'll always be the first Batman I think of, rest in peace. I never understood the haters on Adam West's Batman show. It was made in a different era, primarily for kids.

Whenever a celebrity dies of old age, I get all selfish and can only think about my own dad, who's not quite that old but getting up there, and how he could similarly go at any moment, and I get all anxious and nervous.

Re: Adam West dead at 88

Back in '75-'76, I was 6-7 and the local CBS affiliate started to run the syndicated Batman. I fell in love with it and to this day Batman is one of my favorite superheros. I had the good fortune of meeting him at a car show around that time. That was back before the sci-fi conventions and that's where you met celebrities. I know I met others that way but the only one I remember, other than him, was Arnold Schwarzenegger promoting Pumping Iron. The cool thing was, Adam West was in costume! I got Batman's autograph! I wish I still had it, but I vividly remember the picture. It was the one with him removing his cowl, showing his face. He signed it "Adam West". I read later that was a low period in his life, reduced to putting on the Danskin tights and selling his autograph, but it meant so much to me even to this to this day. I don't have many memories from 40+ years ago, but that is one that stayed.

Found the pic, but not the autograph.

I disagree. Most of the show goes over kid's heads. It's a comedy aimed at adults. Kids can still enjoy it at a superficial level. It's like Rocky and Bullwinkle or Looney Tunes. There are so many jokes and references that only an adult would get yet kids love them because they're cartoons.
