I disagree. Most of the show goes over kid's heads. It's a comedy aimed at adults. Kids can still enjoy it at a superficial level. It's like Rocky and Bullwinkle or Looney Tunes. There are so many jokes and references that only an adult would get yet kids love them because they're cartoons.
As a kid, I thought it was completely straight. As an adult it now appeals to me in an entirely different way.

My introduction to Batman was the Tim Burton movie.
When I was 10-or-so, I had a strange love for the 60's show. I would stay up till 11 or 12 and watch it on ABC Family. It was unlike anything else.
Fast forward to Family Guy-era Adam West. I was delighted that they used him on the show. And then it turned out it wasn't a one-shot cameo.
Then I knew him as being the cool guy at Comi-Con type events. He seemed like a good guy right up till the end.

Always seemed happy, and really what more could you ask for out of life?

I remember one of the last years it aired, the Super Friends brought in Adam West to voice Batman. I was as happy as a kid could be. And who could forget the New Adventures of Batman?

Very sad news indeed. RIP Mr. West. Seems like most of the actors from the show have passed with the exception Burt Ward and Julie Newmar, I suppose not entirely surprising given when the show was made. The show will always be part of my youth and will continue to enjoy the series as it is part of my collection.

Batman, sure. But I loved him as the wacky mayor of Quahog for the show's entire run. Always written beyond zany, and delivered without a shred of self consciousness, he always gave 100%, even allowing the character to bear his real name!
Edit: Tough run for Family Guy, also losing Carrie Fisher just a few months ago.

RIP.
Sadly, the one and only time I got to meet West was in the early 90s, when he was still kind of arrogant and hated talking about Batman. He had a pretty nasty agent at that time as well, so that probably had a lot to do with it (you know, whispering in his ear, telling him he was better than all this "Batman" stuff). He was still nice to the kiddies I saw him around though - so there's that.

I am glad that Fox and WB finally came to an agreement allowing the TV series to hit home video before he passed.
Supposedly he already completed the voice work for the second animated Caped Crusader movie, so that should go forward without a hitch.

Bat-Signal to light up Los Angeles in tribute to Adam West
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Bat-Signal will shine over Los Angeles in tribute to the late Adam West, the actor best-known for playing Batman in the campy 1960 television series.
Mayor Eric Garcetti says the Bat-Signal will be lit at L.A.'s City Hall at 9 p.m. Thursday.
In Batman comics, movies and TV shows, the Bat-Signal is a spotlight with the shadow of Batman's winged emblem that is shown on the night sky to call for Batman's help.
West died Friday at age 88.
Garcetti announced the event on Twitter and added the hashtag, #BrightKnight.
Batman is often referred to as the Dark Knight, but West's children said in a statement that he aspired to positivity and always saw himself as "The Bright Knight."

The digital sub-channel, MeTV, will air a tribute to West on Saturday, (6/17/17).
Mostly westerns, it will feature Maverick, The Big Valley, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Rifleman, The Outer Limits (1964), and the first two episodes of Batman, which feature West dancing the Batusi!

For those of you who have the free IHeart Radio app, tune to WHO Radio 1040 AM in Des Moines today, (Fri. 6/16/17) from 4-7pm Central Time, to hear local personality Simon Conway interview "Robin, the Boy Wonder." (I assume it's Burt Ward).
