The thing about Martin, though, was that he had planned to have a five year time jump between the third and fourth books (A Storm of Swords and A Dance with Dragons), which would give the dragons more time to grow and the surviving kids from the first three books to mature. (In the books, Jon, Dani, and Robb were about fourteen years old; the tv series aged them up a bit.)

Martin then got the bright idea to abandon the time-jump (his reasoning was that too many things would have happened in the interim between the books, and he needed to cover them) and it really messed up his rhythm. The first three books came out in 1996, 1998, and 2000. A Feast for Crows in 2005, and A Dance with Dragons in 2011; and keep in mind that those two books were originally supposed to be a single novel called A Dance with Dragons, but it got so long he had to split it in two. And even then, he ended up removing some chapters from ADWD to include in the sixth book.

I can't help but get the feeling that he either let the story spiral out of his control, or that he's financially secure, seventy years old, and doesn't have a lot of interest in finishing the saga at this point in his life. If that's the case, then I just wish he'd bring in a co-writer or ghostwriter. He's starting sound like Harlan Ellison promising that The Last Dangerous Visions was almost finished and would be delivered to the publisher any day now.
This. My guess is that Marting will die with maybe the sixth book published but not the 7th. They will then hire a ghost writer to work off of his notes (Brandon Sanderson would be ideal, he helped with Wheel of Time) and deliver a final book that is mostly a novelization of the final two seasons of the series. The marketing and publication will of course have Martin's name prominently displayed with the ghost writer given minor credit at the bottom of the cover , unless it's someone famous.

Thoughts on the teaser: not sold. Looks like a bunch of people wearing white mops on their heads.

I didn't read the books and I hated the final season (I also disliked large portions of season 7).
Books or not, you can't build up an epic, existential threat for 7 years, and then snap your fingers with one brief scene going "there, done, problem solved" and expect me to find it satisfying.
The rest of the choices I can live with, but just wish they weren't so rushed.

Yeah, the rush is the main problem with the final 2 GOT seasons. I think it would've been a lot better if both seasons were 10 episodes each like previous seasons and used that time to develop the storylines.

Never saw GoT, so I guess this prequel should be fine.

D&D were in over their heads after the book material ran out, and they knew it.

Bunch of pictures:

https://tvline.com/2022/03/30/house-...rones-prequel/

My cursory takeaway:

1) Doctor Who looks weird in a blond wig.

2) I hope Olivia Cooke gets naked.

As soon as D&D starting running low on book material, there was a noticeable drop in quality. And this didn't happen in the final season or two, it happened about halfway through the series
sorry but the quality of the last 2 books also dropped as Martin introduced more and more characters and side plots and spinning the wheels. There was lots of material not in the show but are in the books because they didn’t advance the plot. Martin still does not have all the major players in position as he is just off on tangents and spinning his wheels.

Yawn. Thanks, but speak for yourself. I liked the 4th and 5th books, even if they are flawed and a step down from the first 3. And they are definitely, unquestionably, better than anything the TV show produced the last 3 seasons or so. You're aware that he has had plans for years now to produce two more books right? Why "move the players into position" if you have another 3000+ pages to do so? GRRM's writing is better than anything D&D could even dream of coming up with on their own. D&D's writing talent (or lack thereof) was severely exposed during those seasons without GRRM's books for guidance.

Anyway, I actually came back into this thread to say I'll give House of Dragons a chance when it debuts in August, but my expectations are low, very low. Hopefully the show runners bought the "World of Ice and Fire" book...and read it.

Production design looks great.
Good or bad, at least there's no more "winter is coming" BS teasing.

Nothing that I've seen so far really makes me want to watch this other than the possibility that Olivia Cooke gets her kit off.

I still believe they should have made that series set in the Age of Heroes that they shot a pilot for. (And I hope the pilot is made available someday, one way or another.)

looks good to me.

hoping for many seasons of fantastic story telling capped off by the puzzling decision to hastily wrap things up in an unsatisfying finale season.

Pretty sure IF they had a plan, this would be the arc that they take with the series. But there is not likely a plan as of yet.

HBO really are in another league. This looks great as expected, production wise, and shits all over The Witcher and Wheel of Time, which were no less expensive.

Looks like maybe they are showing 3 different times sort of together, maybe taking a nod from Season 1 of the Witcher?

Not sure where you are getting that but this has a budget of $20 million (or just under according to the articles) per episode so it is roughly twice the budget of the others, but still no where near the LOTR series budget.

Ok, fair enough, but they don't have budgets so low they have to look so bad. Worst was WOT which looked downright cheap.

Yes some of WoT did but I think a lot of that was Covid related. Hope fully Season 2 will be better but ultimately I was not a fan of the "adaptation" they made.
