Dammit this show is fantastic. I could watch an entire series just based on the last 8 minutes of this episode. An entire series of Mike - without a single word of dialogue - just "Mike-ing" the hell out of things.

How did Mike know that the fellow who was tailing him would switch out the entire gascap (or whole tracker) instead of just changing the battery?

I thought the same thing... but I guess the assumption would be is the guy going to sit out there and try and crack it open or just quickly drive up and switch out the cap.

That was the idea he had at the dump, that they just switched the gas caps quickly. Better question is where did whoever go after sticking the branch on his car horn.
Great cameo by the junk yard man from Breaking Bad BTW.

Common sense. Had to be done quickly. Swapping caps takes seconds. Taking it out every time just increases time that a person could be seen.

Wouldn't they have noticed that they were replacing the gas cap in a different car that the one they had originally placed it in? Also, they must have pinpointed the car's location previously otherwise after the battery died, they wouldn't have been able to find it. What if the car was kept in a garage?

When? I just rewatched the segment. He discovers the tracker in the junker gas cap. We don't see it. It is implied he finds something by the smile on his face. The cab brings him home. He immediately goes to his personal car and takes off the gas cap. He then opens that gas cap and finds another tracker then writes down the serial number. He gets a new tracker from that guy so he can make the swap and track on his own device. I would just assume he left the first tracker with the junker.

I like the other subplots, but they do get repetitive.
When Mike comes onscreen, everything gets interesting in a hurry. My favorite episode of the show thus far was the one with Mike's backstory.
Banks is the man.

The tracker was already on the junker when he went out into the desert to kill Hector. That is how he knew someone followed him / made him think to look for one. I'm guessing this was done after Mike robbed the money last season.

Yes, we have no idea when "someone" started watching Mike, though I would venture to guess that Gus knew about Mike as soon as Nacho started dealing with him. As he is Salamanca's enemy, Gus would keep eyes on their operations at all times. I also wonder if Nacho was possibly working for Gus the entire time.

So Chuck wanted the assistant guy to hear the tape, right? Not sure what the end goal is there. Does he want the assistant to tell someone? Howard knows anyway.

I'm assuming he wants Ernesto to tell Jimmy so that Jimmy will do something Illegal to cover it up and he can catch him in the act.

He immediately goes to his personal car and takes off the gas cap. He then opens that gas cap and finds another tracker then writes down the serial number. He gets a new tracker from that guy so he can make the swap and track on his own device. I would just assume he left the first tracker with the junker.
Mike starts going through his old beater station wagon and finds a tracker (A) in the gas cap. He knows that he's being monitored. He'll leave that tracker (A) at the junkyard so it won't look suspicious.
He then goes home in a cab and finds a second tracker (B) on his personal vehicle. He writes down the information on this tracker down on a piece of paper. He then goes to work at the tollbooth in his car, removes the gascap that contains tracker (B) so that whoever is tailing him won't know he left. He contacts. The veterinarian and has him find the same kind of tracker (C).
Mile then removes tracker (B) from his personal car and hooks it up to a radio to drain the battery. When the battery is drained he puts his new tracker (C) in the gascap, and replaces it in his car. He throws away tracker (B) and the dead battery because he doesn't need it.
He then sits up all night, waiting for someone to show up. A tail pulls up to his car, switches Mike's tracker (C) believing it to be tracker (B) with a dead battery, and then leaves a new tracker (D) in Mike's car.
As soon as the tail leaves, Mike takes out the gascap with tracker (D) and uses his own tracker (C) that the tail took with him to follow the tail. The new tracker (D) is still sitting at Mike's house so it looks like he never left.

Another great episode as usual.
Chuck clearly wanted Ernie to hear that, not so clear to me was what Mike was doing with the
tracker.
I read this topic and still lost what happened.

The gist of it is he swapped out their tracker with his own so he can follow them without them knowing.

Great first episode but the whole tape thing would be so so easy for Jimmy to get around seeing as his brother is completely mental, and stating that he told his brother he did it just to get him off the psycho ledge is actually more believable than the elaborate con that actually happened.
