No, actually, that's the bit and they're going with it ...unless somewhere down the road they change their minds. I don't mind it personally, though he's a bit more restrained than I expected so far.

I mean I could tell it was supposed to be bad and that it wasn't being taken seriously and that they (the host, guest judges, and producers) probably thought it was funny but it was really just bad/cringeworthy in an unfunny way.

Geez, I thought Murray Langston was dead, but he's not (he's 71). So I guess he can show up. According to IMDB, he got $200 a show.

On a covert mission for the CIA no doubt.

But I streamed the first two episodes over the holiday weekend and freaking loved it. My wife was "meh" but she rather watch reality shows anyway. Mr. "Maitland" is hilarious and it's nice to see the judges get in on some of it as well. Hopefully it continues for a little while, I think Myers is actually enjoying himself which is a good thing.

Only two things that kinda bothered me was the whole guy singing that bar song twice in the same show and I think the show might benefit from doing a half hour show (two nights in a row or even back to back) kinda thing rather than one, one hour show. But those are minor quibbles at best.

Haha - you're right.

Here is the revised version of my post:

It seems pretty clear the show is edited for two half-hour versions (maybe for syndication?). The give away is re-introducing the judges at the 30 minute mark.

Speaking of judges, the show is make-or-break based on the judges. If they can keep getting good ones I'll definitely keep watching.

I would like to see them have a special episode with some of the original judges.

Re: The Gong Show is coming back on ABC

Not sure why I skipped the first episode but streamed the second one yesterday. It was OK. Not sure it is something I need to watch. It would benefit being just a half hour; but run two shows concurrently and have two winners.

For sure it is only going to be as good as the judges; they make the show. The make-up on Meyers is really distracting.

Re: The Gong Show is coming back on ABC

It's on the DVR list to watch if there's nothing else. The banana pair was pretty disgusting at the end. The 2 shows needed more gongs.
They got a long way to go to compare to

Re: The Gong Show is coming back on ABC

I just watched the 3rd episode and it was a hoot. Put Mike Myers and Dana Carvey together and hilarity ensues.

It looks like they've made a conscious decision to have some really talented performers on. The guy who did the performance-art videogame drumming thing was really impressive. The judges didn't seem to get it.

Definitely worth a watch. Mike Myers is in his element here- you can almost forgive him for making The Love Guru. Almost...

I also liked the guy with the puppet drummer. I guess the judges just hate drumming.

That third episode was certainly the best episode yet (in my opinion), the chemistry was off the charts (as expected) and Dana basically ran wild (which is what he is best at). I hope he comes back for future episodes.

Enjoyed the fourth episode as well, but not quite as good. I do feel that Myers is really getting comfortable in his role and getting stronger every episode. I hope this continues and maybe they get a few more good judges. Wil Arnett was fine but Helms and Brie were meh at best.

They're showing them out of order, and the pilot and one or two earlier episodes have yet to be seen.
Dana Carvey seemed to be throwing Meyers some straight-lines, such as the reference to Benny Hill, -which he either intended to rattle Mike or give him something to riff on.

Re: The Gong Show is coming back on ABC

As we were watching I mentioned to my daughter "You know, that's Wayne and Garth talking to each other just now" and she basically said "Oh my gosh! It is! That is so weird!" at which point she had me rewind a bit and she rewatched their interactions and found them all to be at least 68% more funny on second viewing.

Re: The Gong Show is coming back on ABC

This is my favorite summer show right now. Mike Myers is just too good.

The stand-up comedian on ep5 was hilarious. It seems that this show is bringing out the big stars. Was that Elizabeth Banks in the green outfit with David Arquette?

I'm genuinely enjoying it. It's just doing "okay" and I wonder if "Battle of the Network Stars" (which quickly ran out of gas) is hurting it.

Definitely still watching, but as mentioned previously the quality is kind of up and down depending on the judges appearing in each episode.

Re: The Gong Show is coming back on ABC

I catch it on Hulu. I don't like Chelsea Handler, but thought it was funny how she seemed to have no idea how the scoring worked.
And I liked how the "model" that walks people off stage didn't want anything to do with the snake guy.

Me and my brother used to watch the old one. Does anyone remember the guy that sang the cookie song? It could have been an Unknown Comic shtick. I think he had a glass of milk and a cookie, and went something like, Looky, Looky, I got a cookie.

Re: The Gong Show is coming back on ABC

Seems like at least one judge each week doesn't seem to get the joke.
