I haven’t cared much for this season. I don’t like the Smurf flashbacks.

Yeah, I've been fast-forwarding through the flashbacks. I still watch the show, but I really hate the way the plot has just meandered along since they killed off Baz. Echoing another thread on this page, I kind of wish the show would get it's "final season" notice, so that something would actually happen.

I'm thinking the season finale is going to end with Smurf dying which is why they're devoting so much time into her flashbacks.

According to the producer, the flashbacks (The young Smurf story) will continue to be part of the series.

Entertaining ass show. I'm in the middle of the second season. The only thing that stands out is Craig's (Ben Robson) accent. I had to IMDB him and he's British. It's weird but I've only ever seen Americans do bad English accents never the other way around.

Ok, I'll see myself out of here until I finish watching the 3rd season.

Re: Animal Kingdom (TNT) -- Series Thread -- based on the film -- from Southland creators

I just binged the last three seasons of Animal Kingdom. Ask me anything, lol. Loved season one as it aired but let episodes pile up on the DVR all these years. The first two seasons are easily the best, while season three drags on and on with Smurf separated from the crew. Losing Baz unfortunately affected the show's chemistry as they had to increase the number of scenes Jay and Pope received. Both characters work better when they were seen less.

Like others here, Denis Leary in season three was a complete waste and his character would have been more effective played by a normal, faceless character actor instead of Leary basically playing himself once again. That stunt casting didn't work out.

Smurf's flashbacks eventually paid off near the end but they took up a lot of screen time. Would have liked seeing far fewer of them in season four. Angela isn't a good replacement for Smurf. Angela is a side character that shouldn't really be a lead. As the sole remaining female member of the cast, I expect her storylines becoming painfully bad now that Smurf is gone. How many dumb addict sub-plots can they foist on us in season five?

Has there been any news on the season 5 premiere?

Probably a while still. I would guess they’d want it to premiere around the normal May/June premiere.
Animal Kingdom resumed production on Season 5 in early September, having had filmed about half of the season before pressing pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

TNT’s popular crime drama Animal Kingdom has set an end date. Ahead of the Season 5 premiere, the network has renewed the series for a sixth and final season.

I hear the cast and crew were notified in November about the pending pickup of Season 6, which is eying a February production start. Season five of the show, which stars Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, Jake Weary, Finn Cole, Leila George, Rigo Sanchez and Jon Beavers, will premiere this summer on TNT.

Season 5 starts on Sunday. My DVR recorded a sneak peek of it early.

I recorded the "sneak" the other night, but it was in progress at the beginning, so I'll probably wait for the legit opener.

Has anyone been watching? This is IMO a very underrated show and would probably be much more popular if it was on Netflix or some other network.

There's a lot of shows on the air that this forum isn't watching or talking about. It's not just Animal Kingdom. Doesn't matter what network. The amount of regulars who contribute here just aren't keeping up with everything like before.

The last few seasons have been pretty bad. I have let this current season build up and will just knock it out over a few days. I was actually considering doing it this week to be done before the finale. We’ll see. I’m surprised it keeps getting renewed.

Binged the first 4 seasons back around Christmas. Enjoyed them all. But I admit this season hasn't been great...the Smurf flashbacks aren't helping.

I watched the first 6 episodes of Season 5 and eh...

I actually don't dislike the flashbacks as much as I did during the previous season. At least Vincent D'Onofrio's daugher Mrs. Sean Penn is nice to look at.

Series finale is tonight.

Anyone watching this still? I let the season build up in the DVR and started going through it this weekend.

I'm still watching and look forward to the finale tonight.

* That was some finale.
Show has been consistently good since it aired, going to miss this one.

Pretty good finale and season. Season 5 probably the weakest. Really like Shawn Hatosy, hope he gets another gig soon. Great on Southland too.

Re: Animal Kingdom (TNT) -- Series Thread -- based on the film -- from Southland creators

The show ended when they killed Smurf off. This final season wasn't terrible or anything but it wasn't an ambitious end to the series. I guess this final season did help fill in Pope's background and what led to his psychotic devotion to Smurf.

I was not particularly happy with their major plot choices in the last couple episodes. It's not what I was imagining.

A certain someone surviving felt completely and utterly implausible after how everything went down. Made me wonder if they wanted a spin-off down the road starring that character.

I'm not sure why they brought Scott Speedman back for that cameo last week. Mostly pointless.

Animal Kingdom was fantastic television for two seasons, then steadily decent for the next two leading up to Smurf's finish. There was nothing especially poor about this final season other than it felt like the showrunner going through the motions to churn out the final days of the Cody family.
