Are Sitcoms almost dead ?
We have superhero shows and now we have a disturbing trend of TV shows based on movies but with inferior casts and budget
Sitcoms, what do we have ? Just the tired Modern Family and Big bang theory
Only 2 Broke girls is good
My sitcoms folder in my HTPC used to be full, now it mainly has UK shows like Plebs, siblings and Drifters
There used to be so many good ones, now it's very sparse

I know everyone's tastes are different but I was bored one night a few weeks ago and decided to give Two Broke Girls a shot. Holy shit it was fucking terrible. Lame jokes, horrible delivery and terrible actresses. I was amazed at how bad it was. Quite frankly I am surprised it made it a full season let alone still on the air for multiple years.

Re: Are Sitcoms almost dead ?
and dont say New girl, that is bloody aweful
The ones i quite liked like Friends with better lives and Men at work all get cancelled
Blackish is somewhat watchable but with it's always sunny and the league ending, very sad days

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is probably the best sitcom on broadcast. Angie Tribeca on TBS is pretty awesome. Does any half-hour comedy count as a 'sitcom'? Silicon Valley on HBO is good, but it seems weird to call that a sitcom.

The number one show in prime time is Big Bang Theory, so I'd say that sitcoms are not "almost dead."

Maybe not dead, but they are definitely harder to come by though.

The Goldbergs is a pretty good show. Barry Goldberg is hilarious. Modern Family had some pretty good episodes this seasons versus most of the crap they delivered last season.

Re: Are Sitcoms almost dead ?
I think basic TV sitcom are pretty much dead, as the last one I watched was Two and Half Men (before Charlie Sheen left).
I honestly think the writing on Basic TV (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX) are terrible these days, as the sitcoms that are popular (Big Bang Theory) are so cliched. We get it that they like Star Wars and Star Trek!

Re: Are Sitcoms almost dead ?
The Goldbergs and Blackish are pretty good. Parks and Rec had a great run, produced some stars, but I don't know if it was successful in terms of ratings. Big Bang Theory wildly successful but I can't make it through 2 minutes, it's popularity makes zero sense to me, it's offensive to knowledge and the characters aren't likeable, how can anybody predict it will be a ratings powerhouse? Happy Endings I thought was great but it only made it 2 seasons, The B in Apt 23 and The Grinder were decent. I think sitcoms now are like opening restaurants, it's just a bad bet for the networks. Community was constantly on death watch, then the showrunner makes Rick and Morty which can probably run as long as he wants it to, surely cheaper to make and sells more on DVD/Blu ray.

This is a familiar question...it happens at some point every couple of decades. If you watch CNN's THE EIGHTIES, execs back then were worried the sitcom was dead - then along came Cheers and The Cosby Show.

Re: Are Sitcoms almost dead ?
Given the first post in the thread is about one of the worst shows on television, but apparently still has it's fans, I would say that there will always be sitcoms. As much as I find some (most) of them totally stupid, they have an audience and will continue to thrive.
One could easily the the same about stupid AARP demographic crime procedurals, but again, they have their audience and are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Re: Are Sitcoms almost dead ?
My favorite sitcoms are animated, so I can't help most people out (American Dad, Bob's Burgers, Rick and Morty).
Idiotsitter is so dumb it's occasionally pretty funny. Broad City is generally great but not to everybody's taste. Workaholics is worth a laugh once in a while.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a show I tend to binge at the end of a season. Last Man on Earth I actually like more for the storyline and drama, but it does get some very good laughs from time to time -- also watch it binge style. You're The Worst is fantastic, but tends to be more a dramedy as well as of late. Younger is underrated.
There aren't really any good "Family" based ones right now, though I hear The Detour is pretty damn good. I hear Silicon Valley is pretty good as well.

Re: Are Sitcoms almost dead ?
As time goes on, I have a harder time watching shows with laugh tracks or live audiences. Unfortunately this means I'm missing out on some shows that everyone seems to love (Big Bang), and also limits available sitcoms. I do like It's Always Sunny and New Girl, but that's about the limit of what I know these days.
