Are Sitcoms almost dead ?

And succeeding, considering how many family sitcoms they're running. I would have thought that Dr. Ken wouldn't make a full season let along a renewal, but apparently it does ok in that Friday night slot with Last Man Standing. Throw in The Middle, Modern Family, Fresh Off the Boat, The Goldbergs, and Blackish, and that's a lot of family sitcoms. If they weren't performing, they'd change it up.

The genre is hardly dead. A bunch of network sitcoms were greenlit for next season.
Humor is extremely subjective, so I can't say that all network sitcoms suck. Some people love The Big Bang Theory and New Girl and some hate them.
There are a lot of good family sitcoms like Fresh off the Boat, The Goldbergs and The Middle. Modern Family is still fun even though it's starting to show it's each now.
I admit I like 2 Broke Girls even though most find it to be a dumb sitcom. I like that Kat and Beth have great chemistry and play off each other well even with the stupidest jokes and puns.

ABC has the best TV comedy line-up in a long time, since Must See TV. I just wish they would try a little variety and not have every one of them be about a family.

Last sitcom I remember watching on a regular basis on the networks was "3rd Rock From The Sun". The current batch are unwatchable to me.

I tend to despise sit-coms. Anything with a idiot/laughter track tends to be horrible. Shows like King of Queens, Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory are shows written by idiots and watched by idiots. Watching paint dry would provide more originality and better laughs.
Good riddance to them all i say.

The Great Indoors looks like it could be a good one. It premieres this fall.
Other than that, there hasn't been any good comedy in years since TBBT went downhill.

The reason i like having some sitcoms in my lineup is you want some shows you don't need to concentrate 100 percent, you can do other things while watching

Multi-camera sitcoms are almost dead. Maybe someone will reinvent or make one to knock our socks off. But I don't think I watch any of them right now.
Single camera sitcoms are alive and well and some of the best entertainment around right now. I think they are considered sitcoms ... ?
My Horace and Pete's format (multi-camera, shot like a stage play) will gain some traction.

ABC tried in the 2014-15 season to have non family sitcoms with Manhattan Love Story and Selfie. I remember Selfie started off awful but improved. I liked the leads on Manhattan Love Story and a few people in the supporting cast were good, IIRC it had worse ratings than Selfie. I think Selfie and Manhattan Love Story could have worked well as basic cable sitcoms. I think ABC will try again to have non- family sitcom later on.

I liked Selfie a lot (that may have something to do with liking Karen Gillian a lot, but it wasn't just her, I had fun with the show), but the title was awful.

I don't think it's dead, but it's not alive like it used to be. "Back in the day," it seemed like night-after-night-after-night of sitcoms. But now enjoyable sitcoms seem few and far between.
This last season I pretty much watched only Modern Family, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Grinder, the latter of which was cancelled.
I have pretty much no interest in a sitcom with a laugh track because they're written for quick laughs, not building comedy (like Arrested Development).
That said, I still enjoy older shows with laugh tracks because they work--like Everybody Loves Raymond, Seinfeld or even Three's Company. But all those are usually a half an hour of a wind-up to a hilarious pay-off at the end. But that's just not the way most sitcoms are written anymore.

Love Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Almost getting tired of Modern Family. Almost. Still watching it, but same storylines over and over (oh look, a misunderstanding between the characters)
Fuller House surprised me. It was actually good.

But while The Goldbergs, Black-ish and The Middle are all family shows for families. Modern Family always seemed more like a family show geared slighty more toward adults, so the whole line-up feels a little off.

ABC's strategy with sitcoms is usually targeting very specific niche demos that aren't served very well by network television. They are specifically made for certain advertisers wanting to hit demos like urban, African-American audiences that live in the bigger coastal cities.

Re: Are Sitcoms almost dead ?
but when we look at the new lineups, it's full of TV shows based on movies (and not comedy movies)
Are there any must see new sitcoms on the schedule ?
I guess the difference is a premise can sell an action/thriller/horror/mystery/procedural type show
But for sitcoms it is all about cast chemistry

A great premise can usually sell a genre show on its own, which is why you usually get virtual no-names cast as superheroes on television. Comedies are all about the writing and talent, which is why network sitcoms always attempt to place one big name in the cast.
