The Unit question

Hi everyone

PLEASE NO SPECIFIC SPOILERS

I've watched season 1 of the Unit, really liked it even given the dragging desperate housewives side of things

I've watched the first 3 episodes of season 2 and feel the show has gone downhill

Does the rest of Season 2 and seasons 3 and 4 get better ?

Again no specific info, just yes it gets better or no it doesn;t

thanks

Re: The Unit question

I enjoyed the entire run of the show, but the housewife stuff persists throughout the entire run. It remains consist in the quality of action and amount.

EXACTLY my opinion. Absolutely fantastic show and you will not regret continuing, even if you do fast-forward through some housewife stuff, like I did.

Re: The Unit question

Interesting comments given the household dynamic was the element that made this series different. If that part does not interest somebody, best to just move on. Personally I liked how the household dynamic changed over the course of the series, but still was always there.

That said, I did think S2 had it's weak points and it did pick back up before going off the air.

Re: The Unit question

Yep; same as the rest. Amazing show with crappy housewife stories which ruined it. Nice eye candy...terrible stories.

I like to think Snake Doctor is still out there keeping us safe. lol

Re: The Unit question

I think it is worth watching the entire run. Yes there are some ridiculous wives stuff along the way, but the action portion of it makes up for it. There are a few standout episodes in the later seasons that are well worth watching.

I wouldn't toss out the baby with the bathwater. Not all the housewife stuff was bad. They clearly give a strong dynamic for the guys. However some of the plots and situations they get into are not just bad, but fucking terrible.

Re: The Unit question

The wives storylines are toned down a lot in seasons 2-4.

The show also becomes more serialized later in it's run as opposed to mission of the week. Keep in mind, season 3 was cut short because of the writer's strike and ends kind of abruptly.

I won't spoil it, but there's a really great arc later in the show's run (season 4)

Wow, the show has been off the air for 7 years now. Time really flies.

Re: The Unit question

For me, the show went downhill when they changed the opening sequence from the generic "Army\Marines chant" to that cheesy song. Changing the theme song isn't why the show went downhill (duh!), that's just went the housewives storylines started taking up way too much time, IMHO. If I was flipping through the dial and saw a re-run of this, I might watch if it was the old theme, but I'd skip it if it were the newer theme.

Wondering which arc you are referring to. Looking over the epsiode synopses on wikipedia doesn't get me any results.
The big arc for me, was in season 3.

And, I too cannot believe that it has been 7 years.

Re: The Unit question

Yeah, it's weird how recent some shows seem despite having been off the air for ages. This ended 7 years ago, Lost ended 6 years ago, Arrested Developments original run ended 10 years ago (and the extra season was 3 years ago).

I feel like this show got a raw deal by being on CBS.

Yeah, I don't get that because it was catering to the same audience that watched JAG, NCIS, Criminal Minds and CSI.

Shawn Ryan said it got cancelled because FOX produced it, not CBS.

He said if CBS was the producing studio, it would have returned for a 5th season. Shows produced by outside studios like FOX always have a huge hurdle staying on the air unless their ratings are exceptional. The Unit was only a moderate ratings performer.

Re: The Unit question

IIRC The Unit had high ratings with older audiences, but not the coveted 18-30ish crowd. Cause heaven forbid something get an older audience. You know, the ones who actually have money to spend.

Sorry I should have been more detailed, but yeah since it was produced out of house for CBS it needed higher ratings. I believe the average viewer age was 52 at the time, so despite solid viewer #s, the 18 - 49 demo meant that it was getting pulled.

Re: The Unit question

What i am finding is there are some really good Unit action scenes which when they switch back to Desperate housewives lose all momentum and impact

There was the one episode without the housewives at all in season 2 (about Brown's Unit testing) and that was way better

on it's own some of the wives stuff isn't terrible, it's just the inter cutting which is annoying. Would be much better to have 40 mins of unit action with a 12 minute appendum at the end about the impact on the housewives

and none of the housewives except for Summer Glau are that hot

Re: The Unit question

Only wife I hated was Snake Doctor's Molly.

I didn't mind Bob's wife Kim. Tiffy was annoying because she always played the Whoah is me, my husband is never home and our marriage is suffering.
