"Back to Normal" - (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (TV-PG, V) (HDTV)

Realizing another brilliant Wells could help track Griffin's location, Barry asks Jesse (guest star Violett Beane) to help. Meanwhile, Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) corners Joe (Jesse L. Martin) about The Flash. John Showalter directed the episode written by Brooke Roberts & Katherine Walczak (#219). Original airdate 4/26/2016.

My over the air antenna dropped out for a few minutes when the time Killer Frost escaped and caused Katelyn to slide across the floor. What happened to the Ice Queen?

Killer Frost threw an icicle at Caitlin, trying to kill her. Zoom caught it and stab Killer Frost, killing her. Warn Caitlin not to do that again.

Why do they still Call Zoom Jay? He is Hunter Zolomon.

I think the death of Killer Frost was supposed to be a major moment, but it's not like we have a lot invested in the character. She was basically a one-note villain that happened to look like Caitlyn. Her and Caitlyn had some odd, wasted exchanges about their differing pasts in the episode. A better writer could have mined a lot more poignancy from that conversation.

I still think the first season of the Flash is the best season-long superhero show in history, but season two just isn't playing on the same level. I still enjoy it because it is the Flash, but the show is now coming down to the other superhero shows on television.

The editing was also strange at the end. There was the ominous end scene with just Barry and Wells...only for the big moment to end up being Wells announcing Barry is going to get his speed back. That is not a surprise to just about any viewer over the age of five. It was a dumb moment to end the show with.

To be fair, its not that Wells is going to get Barry's speed back, but the how: They're going to re-create the particle accelerator mishap that created The Flash (and a host of other meta-humans) and is generally regarded as a major disaster.

The general problem I see with the second season is that building the story around Zoom makes it feel in some ways a re-hash of Season One's plot (which would be hard to top).

Don't have much to say about this one. Pretty forgettable episode.

Barry had no powers and the villain of the week (Griffin Grey) was pretty unmemorable. With Barry having no powers, there seemed to be no sense of urgency to find Caitlin.

Yeah but at least Thawn had desire and purpose. What's Zoom's end game? He doesn't want money or revenge or to rule the world. He just wants to create terror because it's fun? Really? For a one episode psychopath that's OK, but not for the season long villain. I fear they will make the man in the iron mask Hunter's id that was split into him and Zoom.

This is easily my favorite show on TV (I'm a nerd, ok?!), and there was a moment last night I was fast forwarding through the episode. My wife, who knows I adore this show, asked me what was wrong. I told her "Turns out The Flash - the show about the guy who runs really fast is amazing. The Flash - the show about the guy who used to run fast is BOOOOOORING."

PhantomStranger 04-27-16 01:59 PM

Re: The Flash (S2E19) -- "Back to Normal" -- 4/26/16

Griffin Grey is a pretty obscure character plucked from the more recent Flash comics. He only appeared in a few issues as Bart Allen's friend. If you don't know Bart Allen, it's probably better if you don't go down that rabbit hole.

^ That was cool. But yeah, filler episode but it's kinda interesting to see Barry back to his 'normal self' and not be able to do what he has been doing by being the hero.

FIRESTORM villains can't catch a break on this series. Killer Frost bites the dust. :(

I strongly got the impression when Frost and Caitlyn were talking that when Frost said she had a brother who died and Caitlyn said she didn't that Caitlyn was hiding something.

The phase through to catch the icicle was pretty cool.

Re: The Flash (S2E19) -- "Back to Normal" -- 4/26/16

Interesting episode, but coming after such a big episode was kind of anticlimactic. Then again most any episode not directly against Zoom probably would be. Still, it had its moments - showing Barry in speedster mode starting his day and normal Barry starting his. Also, Wally's meeting with The Flash.

I'm sorry to see Killer Frost go - I think Danielle Panabaker gave much better performances as her than as Caitlin.

But creating another particle accelerator explosion? Because that worked so well the first time.

PhantomStranger 04-28-16 12:47 PM

Re: The Flash (S2E19) -- "Back to Normal" -- 4/26/16

I would agree that Panabaker gives a better performance as Killer Frost than Caitlyn. It's possible our Caitlyn has a brother she doesn't know about on Earth 1.

I appear to be in the minority, but Panabaker's Killer Frost line delivery felt strange to me. It sounded like she was trying to imitate Captain Cold.

Pretty dull episode. I was enjoying seeing normal Barry and getting back to some CSI stuff, but Old Hulk and the Zoom stuff dragged it down.

It seems to work for the Joker. He's been doing the same thing for 75 years. Also, Zoom mentioned conquering other Earths.

I'm guessing Barry gets his speed back (hopefully more), Wally gets his speed and other random people get powers so we can have freak of the week fillers for season 3

This. Episode would have been an acceptable one-off if they had not killed of one of the few enjoyable characters they added from Earth 2.

It is indeed ridiculous that character's continue to use the wrong name. Blindspot is the worst with everybody still using Jane Doe when they have fully proven her actual identity.

Seems likely Wally will get his speed while working in the engineering lab in college.

I really hope the 'big bad' of S3 isn't another evil speedster in the veins of Reverse Flash / Zoom. This whole season has just been a pale rehash of season one imo besides the first quarter being used as simple setup and advertisement for Legends of Tomorrow.

Brack 04-30-16 06:31 AM

Re: The Flash (S2E19) -- "Back to Normal" -- 4/26/16

I think the show will bounce back with the rest of the season. I think the seasons need to be shorter. Filler episodes can be fun, but they've mostly been bad on this show.

So this is going back from season 1, but is Flash still set to disappear in 2019 or whatever, or was that potential future squashed when Reverse Flash never existed at the end of season 1?

Grodd and Gorilla City? Even bringing back Cold and Heatwave would be welcome compared to much of this season.

New Gods in the Arrowverse? I thought Black Racer was sort of a "death" abstract. How can The Flash compete against that?

Rather see someone like The Spectre show up (we know Jim Corrigan exists in Constantine) and have Barry try to prevent him doling out justice.

I guess I'll stand alone. I loved this season... not as much as season one, but I thought it was damn entertaining. Loved Zoom, loved King Shark, loved Earth 2, loved and miss Patty already, Grodd is always awesome... I even enjoyed all the LoT setup. It was also great getting "Wells" back. The only real con for me this season is how Wally was handled.

Indeed, especially if they're planning on introducing Wally as Kid Flash. A couple of speedsters a season are plenty.

I think the basic themes and character introductions have been great, it's just lacking the same level of execution we saw in season one. The villains have largely been better this season and King Shark was awesome.

I have thought that the whole Earth 2 concept could have been handled better. They didn't flesh it out enough for my tastes and made Barry look like an idiot when he first visited it.
