Containment (CW) -- Series Thread -- From the EP of The Vampire Diaries -- 4/19/16
SERIES PREMIERE - When a mysterious and deadly epidemic breaks out in Atlanta, a vast urban quarantine is quickly enforced. Trying to keep the peace on the streets is police officer Lex Carnahan (David Gyasi), who has quickly risen through the ranks of the Atlanta PD. But Lex's job becomes even harder when he learns that his longtime girlfriend, Jana (Christina Moses), and his best friend and fellow officer Jake (Chris Wood), are trapped within the cordoned area. Also quarantined within viral ground zero is 17-year-old Teresa (Hanna Mangan Lawrence), who is eight months pregnant and now separated from her boyfriend on the other side; Katie Frank (Kristen Gutoskie), an elementary school teacher now placed on lockdown with her entire class, including her young son; and CDC researcher Dr. Victor Cannerts (George Young), the doctor who initially made the controversial call to quarantine the area, and who is now racing to find a cure for the virus. On the outside, Dr. Sabine Lommers (Claudia Black) leads the government efforts to contain the outbreak, and asks for Lex's help in enforcing the cordon - which grows increasingly difficult as the public trust deteriorates. David Nutter directed the episode written by Julie Plec (#101). Original airdate 4/19/2016.

Re: Containment (CW) -- Series Thread -- From the EP of The Vampire Diaries -- 4/19/1
Guess no one watched this yet.
Some of the acting was spotty, but I was entertained even though it was a little formulaic. It's basically a virus/outbreak thriller. Some similarity to the SyFy show Helix, except it doesn't take place in the North Pole.
Some chilling scenes, especially when Patient Zero starting coughing up a pile of blood and splattered it all over the doctor treating him.
I thought they did a good job setting it up and making this scenario at least seem somewhat plausible.
Read that this was actually shot in Atlanta and not Canada. Probably because Julie Plec, the showrunner, also works on The Vampire Diaries and that shoots there as well.
The flash forward to Day 13 where the shit hits the fan looks potentially interesting.
I know we're hitting a time where a bunch of you still have full DVRs and not a lot of time to add another show to your viewing schedule. So I'm not expecting most here to jump at watching this right away. Pretty smart of The CW to launch this post-The Flash to give it 6 weeks with a decent lead-in. It will have to fend for itself when it goes into the summer.

I'll give it a couple of episodes since Julie Plec was the driving force behind the good years of Vampire Diaries. But these outbreak thrillers usually end up devolving into all the same scenario, which often bores me.

Re: Containment (CW) -- Series Thread -- From the EP of The Vampire Diaries -- 4/19/1
I'm a total sucker for shows/movies with a theme of everything falling apart or the after math of everything falling apart.
Going to be hard to compete with Colony so fresh in my mind being that was a walled off alien sort of vibe and this seems like it's just fenced off sick people. Also tough to judge a show like this from the first ep being the first ep is ALWAYS everyone going "Wait, is something happening?".
We need to get to at least ep 3 to see where it's really going story wise.
I also find it a bit amusing to see it pitched as a limited run show when it's a full 13 eps. That's a season damn it. Modern networks cancel shows all the time after 5-6 eps and really cancel them after one season. Yet some how this 13 ep season is a "limited run". Yeah I get the idea is they have no plans for a season two but we all know if it's a rating hero they will find a way to make another season.
Even if it means just bringing back the most D level 2min on screen star to roll over into a different location. "I..... I was a doctor when this broke out Atlanta last year! We need make another..... containment zone!"
I still remember Prison Break in season 1

My bad, it was Panama as the start of season 3.

The CW thinks advertising it as a "limited run" may induce casual viewers into thinking it's a special event. If the ratings are decent, it's coming back 100% percent for another season.
The pilot felt like a bland take on The Walking Dead, right down to setting it in Atlanta.

I have enjoyed both episodes so far. It has been done before and I'm pretty sure I know how it will end, but I like it.

I enjoyed episode 2.
They've kept things pretty grounded and are building up the chaos and paranoia slowly. And so far, there's no overly stupid or annoying characters.
Pretty obvious the teacher and cop will be a couple at some point.

I expected this to be awful but have been pleasantly surprised. It's such a change for a show like this to show people acting intelligently and competently given the information they have as characters. No Carls or Loris yet. And kids and teens that act like kids and teens and not the spoiled whiny Hollywood teen we see in every one of these shows to create conflict.

Another ep down, show is moving rather slowly but that's kind of the point given it's nature.
I'm finding the response to the problem to be rather BS and being done just for plot points. 11 cops inside and that's it? We can't send anymore more in being "no one in no one out"?
Maybe if it was zombie like BS but it's simple hazmat suit solves everything level issues. No different than Ebola out breaks for the most part. Plus it's only 48 hours. I think all of us know people (or have been the person) who just slugged out over a weekend, never leaving the house for 48 hours. Big deal.
show is acting like it's almost impossible for people to just stay home for a few days.

Just catching up with these on my DVR. I'm up to the 4th ep. I wasn't expecting much but this show so far has been pleasant surprise.

Anyone still watching this? It's really good. Last episode was fucking heart-wrenching. My wife was a mess.

I've been watching, and have thought it entertaining while steadily moving forward with multiple storylines, until this last episode. Some actions that I found tough to believe, not much plot progression, and lack of agency for the protagonists. If there were additional episodes, or another Season, then I'd have been much more understanding, but it definitely struck me as a missed opportunity to have an episode like this with only 2 remaining.

I'm 4 or 5 episodes behind but still recording it. I intend to watch the rest. Was this week the Finale?

Surprised the city doesn't help the cordon more like helicopter or drone (K-max or such) dropped supplies. More folk in suits, etc. Also surprised some media outlets don't treat this like Big Brother with 24-7 drone or long range camera footage being aired. (Today in the Cordon, brought to you by Viagra!)

I know you commented on this almost 1 month ago, but the episode you're talking about (the death of Katie) brought me to tears.
OMG, I was a mess after that. One of the most devastating and heartbreaking death scenes in a TV show. I was really rooting for Katie and Jake.
It was a pretty good series overall. Somehow they managed to bring closure to most of the storylines, but they did leave things open for it to potentially continue, which didn't happen.

I don't know how many here watched this series 4 years ago. But it's scary how topical it is now. It's about a killer virus that takes out most of Atlanta, which the CDC can't stop. It's actually the Number 10 trending show on Netflix right now. It’s a forgotten show, but now people are actually discovering it. And it was actually a really good series.
It’s still on Netflix, but I don’t know how many here would feel comfortable watching something so close to home now.
