^ Hard to say since only one episode has aired, but it definitely has the potential to be.
It was a pretty awesome first episode.

I dug it. It was a little disconcerting seeing so many things from the books changed or moved around but I really liked the vibe of the show.

I liked it quite a bit but the ending gave me an unintended chuckle. When Mac stops swimming to eyeball his wife and take a drag off his cig he then starts swimming again with a sideways start that reminded me of Martin Short's synchronized swimming skit from SNL. Not what they were going for I would assume.

I finally got a chance to watch this. I thought it was a really good 1st ep. I'm in.

This is slow, dark, with a sense of realism. Has the potential to be a great, but it's different.

Solid episode. Good shootout and chase sequence with Mac and Buddy and the gun dealers in the abandoned warehouse. During the chase though, was odd with the random semi truck that appeared -- only to disappear when they were cleaning up after the dead bodies.
Couple other call outs to the Big Star album and 'Mike' from the old NBC show "Ed" as one of the police investigators.

From what I could tell, during the chase sequence, the guy Quarry was going after swerved hard left to avoid the semi truck, only to end up getting the vehicle's hard top and his own head plowed off by a bulldozer that came out of a side street. Although, it sure seemed like they used two different vehicles in that stunt piece.

I am gonna give this a 1 or 2 more eps but it just isn't grabbing me. Lead is not likeable nor does he have much charisma, never has going back to The OC. The show is trying WAY too hard to homage those terrible 70's movies. Just because it is set in the 70's does not mean you have to film and pace the show the way those movies were. I am not a fan of this type of storytelling.
There are good things about the show which makes the things I dislike all the more glaring.

Good follow up to last week.
This is definitely more of a slow burn show compared to Cinemax's previous works.
Lots of headshots during that Warehouse shootout.
I'm not sure, but I guess Mac's wife knows he killed her lover based on her reaction passing by his house.
I thought the playback of the cassette messages between them was an interesting touch.

While not "liking" the character, it's easy to empathize with him without excusing his actions (such as the murder of wife's lover). He's damaged goods after the triple punch of wartime horrors, spousal infidelity, and rejection by society. But he does have something of a conscience & understands that he's prone to violence & rage.
As for charisma, I prefer his laid-back style (alternating confidence with confusion & pacifism with rage) to the interchangeable pretty-boy-with-scruff types seen in shows such as Zoo, Leftovers, Banshee, etc. You know the type: always smarter than everyone else, quick with the quip, charms every lady out of her pants, etc. At least Max isn't a cookie-cutter character/face.
But I can see why the show might turn off some fans. Just hope it sticks around long enough to find a fan base. My wife hasn't decided yet whether she likes it well enough to continue (she shares some of your impressions, evidently).
Still trying to get Dewey Crowe out of my head.

Logan Marshall-Green was just cast in a pilot for a new show... http://deadline.com/2016/09/damnatio...st-1201823505/
Two cable shows with low episode orders could be doable... but it is suspicious.

Apparently everyone felt the same as I did about this episode. What a bore. The only redeeming part was Buddy's mom who reminds me of my grandma.

I guess my biggest issue so far is that the lead character is either woefully miscast or poorly written. He looks like a junkie extra from a porno shoot and exudes no physical menace. Heck, his wife seems to have more chops and could probably take him in a fight.

Yeah it's already dropped off of my must watch list. I'll probably catch up over the holidays when everything else is on hiatus. All the issues surrounding the shooting delays and mass recasting seem to have really done a job on it.

Posting this a little late.
Yes, there's still 3 more episodes left. With Fall TV on cable and network in full swing, looks like this has fallen off the urgent viewing schedule of the 5 or 6 of us who have Cinemax.

I'm guessing some folks here expected this to be the next Banshee, which clearly it's not. I'm caught up through last week and it's definitely a slow burn period show.
