Actually, I just watched Stewart's first show and he was pretty awesome right from the start, so I have no idea what to expect from Trevor Noah. He needs to improve pretty quickly or I might stop watching, too.

I also think he's been getting better as the days go on. I'm also seeing a nice change in the first 2 segments from the Jon years. Comparing Trump to African kings was hilarious and probably not something Jon would've gone with since he's not African. And I don't think there's been a Fox News bashing bit yet which is refreshing. Not that they don't deserve it, just that it was getting a little stale.

Stewart denigrated CNN at least as much as he did Fox.

Good to see Noah continuing the contempt for braindead mainstream media, with the bit about media trumpeting pumpkin spice (whatever the hell that is).

I think this is going to be the main point he needs to sell and that I love seeing so far. He's a foreigner, so this show needs to focus on that. It's an African looking mostly at the U.S. through the eyes of a foreigner. We had a little bit of that with John Oliver (who by the way, was lucky enough to have the Carlos Danger story fall on his lap).

Actually, that's what it seems to come down to: A great story falling on these guys laps. Stewart had it with 9/11, his confrontation with Tucker Carlson and the Bush Presidency and later Oliver with the Weiner/Danger fiasco. Noah will sooner or later get a story that will create that spark with the audience, make him shine and find his groove and touch on the show.

I loved Wood Jr.'s vignette at the Million Man March, and the bit afterward. "Thirsty Lisa's calling."

Not really liking this without Jon and I'm also struggling to enjoy Colbert's version of the Late Show.

Trevor Noah had an emergency appendectomy today, so expect some reruns.

I'm not as enthusiastic about Noah as I was. Stewart, though I didn't find him very funny, had a bitterly caustic tone that is sorely missed. Noah is milder.

On Mitch McConnell: "Instead of taking health care away from millions of Americans, your priority should be to repeal whatever that thing is (on his neck)"

Klepper is unquestionably the standout correspondent right now, though I find Michelle Wolf oddly appealing.

I preferred The Onion's take on McConnell:

Noah just caught me off guard because his delivery of that line was actually funny. Stewart always did an impression of McConnell as a turtle.

It's a Thread Bump!

Is anyone having trouble viewing The Daily Social Distancing Show? Last week, and now trying to watch last night's show, I keep getting errors messages saying "unable to play video" or "something went wrong, go back and try again". Best I can get is about two minutes in on the ones that play at all. Not happening with any other channels, so I doubt it's my internet connection (that would be a different type problem anyway).

I watch on YouTube. They typically have about 10 or 15 minutes over a few clips.

I think Trevor is doing great. Miss the studio format.

Some of his personal thoughts are captivating and evocative. He appears to do those without writers.

He is tapping this

Love is in the air! Trevor Noah and Minka Kelly are dating, Us Weekly confirms.

“They’ve been dating for a while, well before quarantine started,” a source tells Us.

While the budding couple have yet to publicly comment on the news, their social media activity all but confirms it. They follow each other on Instagram, and the Daily Show host has “liked” several of the actress’ posts since November 2019.

Anyone still watching? I thought Noah did a great job during the pandemic from his apartment. But since the long break and return to the studio ... meh. Just not working for me at all anymore. I've stopped watching except to try it again every few weeks to see if they've worked out whatever is (for me) not working. Nope. I think I'm truly done with it.

Still watching, though I never watch the interviews. I hope the audience-less format continues indefinitely. I can't stand audiences. I agree with you that his Apartment Period was superior. The ability to edit everything to its essence was a major plus.

Checked back the other day to see the show's back in the studio with an audience. Basically, back to pre-pandemic. I guess I can watch again!

Good. I was never happy they didn’t pick any of the side players but a totally random guy. Never bothered watching much.

I wonder if CC just ends the show completely. How many people still watch these shows?

The show still gets great ratings. At first, I was disappointed that none of the side players were cast but in reality, the only one that could have been somewhat of a good choice would have been Samantha Bee and still, I don’t think she fit well with the Daily Show format. She was much better on her own TBS show. John Oliver should have been the successor but he had already bolted to HBO for his Sunday show.

My pick now for successor is Roy Wood Jr. He has all the tools to be the next guy on the show and molded to his style of comedy. Jordan Kepler could be a solid choice too but it’s kind of been there done that as he had his show that failed in the 11:30 spot

That's not true, actually. During Jon Stewart's halcyon years, the show was regularly bringing in 1.5-1.6 million viewers. After an initial dip when Trevor Noah took over, he was still able to achieve numbers in the 1.5 million range early in the Trump years, and was still pulling 1.2 million viewers in 2019. But since Trump left office, ratings have declined precipitously. I'm not sure if it was COVID, or the extended summer break he took in 2021, or being the last show to bring back a live studio audience, but he started 2021 still pulling in about 500-600K viewers, and now it's down to about 300-400K viewers: https://twitter.com/search?q=late%20...d_query&f=live

And yes, the cable landscape is much different than it was 7 years ago, but it's not just the total numbers, it's also in relation to the other shows. This year, he was near the bottom of the late night list, only regularly outperforming the recently-cancelled Full Frontal.

I think it's no coincidence that his contract is up at the end of this year. Given the ratings slide over the last couple years, I bet Comedy Central probably encouraged him to "pursue his other interests" rather than renew his contract.
